Heartfelt DIY Valentine Decor Ideas

DIY Valentine's Day decor is just the thing for people who want to express their creativity, make decorations as a group, or share a sentimental message with their Special Someone, little ones, teacher, coworker, friend... the list goes on and on!

From Valentine's Day garlands to wreaths and centerpieces, there are so many ways to DIY your decor for your home, office, classroom, or any other space!

Mason Jar Candle Holders

Decorate jars with paint, lace, or glitter to create romantic lighting. There are so many examples of these online, like these adorable Valentine's Day mason jar luminaries. Search for inspiration online, but then you can make them your own.

Handmade Paper Garlands

Use 12" x 12" sheets of scrapbook paper to make heart-shaped garlands. This activity is super fun for kids of all ages, too!

Photo Collage Wall

Use photos of loved ones to form a heart-shaped collage.

Decorative Pillow Covers

Depending on your skill level and craft interests, there are many DIY Valentine pillow covers to make at home. Crochet, cross stitch, French word art, and more–you can choose how you want to decorate your home (and your throw pillows!) for Valentine's Day.

Framed Love Quotes

Reading and decorating with quotes is one of my favorites. Choose a favorite love quote or poem, and decide whether to write it using your best calligraphy skills, print it on the computer, or something else. One of my favorite quotes is by Joseph Campbell: "Love is a friendship set to music." But you choose your favorite!

Valentine's Day Trees

A red pitcher or vase, branches, and paper hearts can make an adorable tabletop decoration or centerpiece for Valentine's Day. You can also use a neutral-colored pitcher if you're going for a more subdued vibe.

Playful and Fun Valentine’s Day Decor

From Michael's to Dollar Tree to Target–and honestly, just about everywhere in between–you can find fabulous whimsical decorations for Valentine's Day!

I love Target's playful mixed-pattern heart garland (pictured above). Target has lots of these garlands, and you can also find them on Etsy. You can try repurposing your red Christmas garland for a layered effect by hanging it alongside a heart garland, just slightly higher or lower.

Heart-Shaped Disco Ball

Target's heart-shaped disco balls are adorable. Everyone from Swifties to retro-chic girlies (and guys!) love disco balls–or hearts, in this case. It would be fun to try following this DIY disco ball tutorial and make a disco heart at home.

Balloon Bouquets

Create clusters of red, pink, and white balloons. Spell LOVE with small red balloons, inflate pink heart balloons with helium, or blow a bunch of red, white, and pink balloons up and throw them around your kids' rooms. Of course, you can also choose a balloon bouquet, complete with a Mylar Valentine's Day balloon, at your local party store.

Valentine’s Day Wreaths or Garlands

Many fun designs use felt hearts or pom-poms. You can DIY these or buy them from the store. They are available at many well-known stores like Michael's, Kohl's, and Target, or you can shop for adorable wreaths and garlands from small online stores like Two Inspire You or Etsy.

Themed Tableware

Lots of places sell Valentine-themed plates, cups, and other tableware. From Target paper plates to Williams-Sonoma dinnerware, there are lovely possibilities within every price range.

Dollar Tree Decor

The rumors are true! Dollar Tree has popular $1.25 Valentine's Day trees in pink and red this year–and, in true Dollar Tree fashion, lots of other $1.25 goodies. They vary from store to store, and you can order online, but only if you are buying in bulk.

Novelty Candles

A Be Mine candy heart candle, Brooklyn Candle Company Love Potion candle, or one of the many Valentine candles on Etsy boasting sweet and spicy messages are perfect for gifting and Valentine's decor.

High-End Valentine’s Day Decor for a Chic Look

If you're looking for a luxurious aesthetic for Valentine's Day, add a touch of elegance with luxurious materials like velvet, crystal, gold, and beautiful flowers. These decor ideas are all super chic:

Velvet Pillows and Throws

Incorporate rich textures in romantic shades like blush and burgundy. A burgundy chenille throw blanket from Spoken or a heart-shaped velvet pillow from World Market can make your Valentine's Day decor feel luxurious.

Gold and Crystal Accents

Use metallic candle holders, vases, or crystal chandeliers. You can find all of the above with a quick search on Spoken, as well, or directly from your favorite home goods stores like Anthropologie, West Elm, or Pottery Barn. (Ps. Did you know that if you find a candle holder, vase, or chandelier you like, you can enter the URL into the search bar on Spoken to find dupes or better deals?! You can!)

Floral Arrangements

Repeat after me: I can arrange flowers beautifully. I worked in a flower shop for a few months while pregnant with my daughter. I promise you can learn to arrange beautiful, sophisticated roses, peonies, tulips, jasmine, and other favorite flora. It makes me feel so proud when I've arranged my flowers at home. I recommend also visiting Julie Blanner's blog for helpful, step-by-step Valentine's Day flower arrangement tips.

Trendy Valentine's Day Decor

Last week, I wrote about the top interior design trends in 2025, which was a reminder that top trends can offer inspiration if you want to try a new decor style for Valentine's Day this year or if you want to keep your decorations trendy.

Sustainable Valentine Decorations

Sustainable decor is 'in' in 2025 because it makes us feel good about our homes and shows our planet more love. Perfect for Valentine's Day, if you ask me. Search for sustainable options, like recycled glass vases and other recycled glass goods. Of course, using what you already have and purchasing items you will use for a long time are a couple of the most sustainable choices you can make.

Something Mocha Mousse-tastic

Neutral earth tones are in, including Pantone's color of the year: Mocha Mousse. Incorporate this super awesome neutral color of the year and some of its complementary colors in your Valentine's Day decor if you want to make a super-stylish statement. Hear me out here. You get a compliment on something cute in your Valentine's decor and get to say, "Thanks, it's Mocha Mousse!" So fun.

A Textured Design

Mixing and matching textures is also a winning strategy for all the decorating you will do this year. Faux fur and boucle heart-shaped pillows, velvet or corduroy fabrics, and dried flowers or mosses can add texture to your Valentine's decorations.

How to Mix and Match Styles

You can combine DIY Valentine's Day decorations with high-end decor for a more balanced, personalized look. You can also mix different types or styles of decorations, like the adorable candy conversation hearts and roses above.

By combining different items you love, you can create decorations that bring you joy and spread love in your own unique way.

Mix Candy and Flowers

Smart School House's adorable conversation hearts and roses (pictured above) would make a delightful Galentine's Day party decoration. I love the combination of candy and flowers and think this is truly one of the cutest ideas I've seen!

Pair DIY Garlands with a Chic Centerpiece

DIY Valentine's Day garlands made using pom poms or paper hearts can be paired with beautiful crystal tableware, candle holders, and other accent pieces. You don't have to choose between classy and DIY. If you like both, you can combine what you love most so your decorations are true to you.

Use Playful Tableware with Elegant Gold Table Accents

This is just a reverse of the last one. I love how these adorable checkered plates have the simplest gold accent around the edge, which would tie in perfectly with your golden picture frames or vases.

Neutral and subtle Valentine's decor works, too!

Whether you want to go all out with candy hearts and pink everything or try something more neutral, like the beautiful vases and framed botanical photo above, you can't go wrong! The vases could be used year-round to complement your other stylish modern decor.

Whatever you do, I hope you decide to try at least one of these ideas to spread love in your cozy little corner of the world–on Valentine's Day and every day. And, as always, happy decorating and celebrating. XO. 💘
