Good stain
I used this on a large deck and ramps and stairs on the back and a smaller deck and ramps and steps up front. When I first stained the deck I used Thompson. That stuff lasted about a year when it started peeling. Last year I used this timber oil stuff but only did 1 coat. That 1 coat had faded away. This year I did 2 coats. The wood still soaked up and 1 Th coat. But the 2 coat I think was better and it gave the deck more of a shine / a darker rich color and it’s standing up to the foot traffic from us and the 5 dogs. I would say plan to do 2 coats. But use a brush I did a roller on the deck boards but it seems the roller doesn’t give the wood much stain but the brush did . Shake the can ?, don’t bother stir it for the best results . And I used a 2 inch brush on the spindles and 3 inch brush on the deck boards and they did a great job
Water based Timber oil???
What a crock of marketing fluff! How can a water based stain be called timber oil? I wanted something with oil to protect the wood. This low VOC blend is anything but oil and I seriously doubt its ability to protect and soak in. Very un-even coverage with many brush marks after drying. I have used the old solvent based product in the past with great results. I will look at the label closer next time and avoid anything called oil with water clean-up in the instructions! I do not recommend the low VOC version of this product.
Unacceptable Degree of Raised Grain on New Cypress
Applied to new cypress that had been sanded to 150 grit smoothness. Used synthetic bristle brush out of direct sunlight with air temperature about 85 F. Looked good after completion. Significant raised grain appeared as product began to dry (24 hours). 48 hours later product has dried and raised grain is so bad that the finished product is unacceptable for intended usage (Adirondack chair). My normal treatment of raised grain with other clear finish products has been to lightly sand and apply a 2nd coat. Instructions on this product says apply one coat only. I'm considering buffing lightly with a 3M abrasive pad. Anyone out there with a proven solution is asked to reply.
Good quality stain for the right application
I don't often write reviews. However, after reading so many and finally deciding on this product, I felt I should add my experience. I chose to use this stain because it is oil-based (not water based) and because it adds a bit of color to the wood. I also chose it because of my application of using it to stain white cedar shakes (shingles) on the gable of my shed which has a slight overhang. I stained each piece of cedar on both sides with a paint brush. The stain went on evenly with no brush marks left behind. Yes, this was not fun and was time consuming, but it makes for a better result in the end. I used the "natural" color which many have commented that the color is too "orange" looking. Maybe on red cedar it looks more orange, but on white cedar I think the color has a nice natural look. Note: This is not a clear stain - it does add a bit of color. (See my photos of stained white cedar vs. unstained.) I did not want to use spar varnish because it will yellow over time and eventually peel. I am sure I will have to re-stain my cedar shakes at some point, but that is OK. Nothing lasts forever.
