I saw the reviews saying the up/down gas cylinder on this thing fails, but though 'eh, it's probably an isolated production thing, I'm sure they've fixed it by now.' Answer: they have not. I used this chair for about 6 months at which point it began randomly and at the most inopportune times possible descending to its lowest position in a motion that would be comic if not so frustrating. Sitting on a Zoom call with Jan from Accounting, my entire body descends out of frame like the wobbly establishing shot of a community college student film. 'But can't you just replace the gas cylinder?' I hear you ask. 'They're cheap.' Yes, yes you can. But if you're going to do it, for the love of Pete, do it before you ever once assemble it. Removing the old incontinent gas cylinder after 6 months of holding up my sturdy posterior was akin to removing the brake caliper on a 1988 Caprice that spent its entire life on a Rural Indiana dirt road. Pipe wrenches, levers, a torch, and enough youtube videos to send some aspiring influencer to internet college, I finally got the thing out, completely destroying the cylinder and the foot rest with which it has become one for eternity in a way that would make the likes of Kirk Camron jealous. All of which to say, if you think about a chair's purpose in life, it's pretty simple: hold person up, comfortably. This one gets a community college B-minus on the latter and an utter fail on the former.

Kind of a weird shape and cheap cloth. It wasn't built as poorly as other chairs I've purchased online, but it's not comfortable enough to use for more than an hour or so at a time. It might be a better fit for someone with long legs?

I put the chair together with no issues until I loosened the footring. It locked up and would not tighten again after I adjusted height. Turned to the instruction, nothing about how to fix the issue. No instructions or information on HON website. I disassembled it and took the locking mechanism apart. I was able to loosen the inner ring. Put the locking mechanism back together and reassembled the chair. Working fine now. Seems like this could be a common issue and would expect HON to have info on how to deal with this.

Well made sturdy chair. Seat padding is very comfortable. The disappointment is the seat back which is non adjustable up or down or front to back. You need to sit back in a deeper seat to use it which takes you away from work surface. I mostly lean forward so I kept the chair. Would be nicer if you could occasionally sit back and rest while still staying in your work zone.

The chair works fine. The foot rest ring was a pain to install (the instructions were accurate and simple, but it kept binding and was difficult to twist), but went on correctly and has held its position fine for a couple of weeks. It seems important to get this right because if your legs are left dangling there will be pressure on the back of the thighs. Otherwise, the chair seems basic, but sturdy. I did go for the optional roller blade castors . . . they allow me to move the chair to or away from the desk with my hands (pushing / pulling on the desk) easily enough and would recommend them if you suspect that would be a likely use case. I have a GeekDesk, sit / stand desk that adjust between preset heights . . . but in the past year I added some large monitors that remain at a fixed height, so I leave the desk at the standing height. This has left me standing 8-10 hours a day, which has bothered me some. I wanted a chair tall enough that I could sit or stand without adjusting the desk. This almost gets there. At it's tallest position I can work at the desk while sitting and without adjusting the standing height, but lowering the desk height 2-3 inches works better . . . easy on this desk on which the height is adjusted by an electric motor, but if the desk was a fixed height this chair would have been a little short for its intended use.
Perfect for both sitting & standing desk!
Perfect for use with my standing and sitting desk! Comfortable. A bit bulkier than I imagined but very happy with this purchase.

Almost 8 years, and I still use it in my home office. Every day. Some days I use it more than 10 hours a day. With this chair I also purchased arm rest. They were the only problem, but still work. About 4 years in the arm rests padding fell apart. But not the chair. The chair is still rocking. The only reason I remembered to write this review was because last week 2 bolts fell out. I've just put them in and tightened few other bolts that frankly didn't need much tightening. Could have left them as they were. Those two bolts that fell out were there to hold backrest in place. The best purchase I ever made. My weight has gone up and down significantly over the years. At my heaviest I was 275lb. Right now I am 245lb. I think this chair is for people of larger frame. Note, this chair does not have very low position. Originally I got this chair because I had standing desk that frankly wasn't great idea for me. This chair solved that problem.

My office bought a bunch of these and use I them at a sit/stand desk. I like them enough that I purchased one for my home office. The assembly was easy enough, but there was an issue with the foot ring locking mechanism. I unscrewed it all the way, as per the directions, but the gas tube got wedged in HARD after just a couple of inches. I couldn't get it out with all my strength or a hammer. Finally added some WD-40 which was able to work in and allow me to free it. What I found out is that when the ring was unscrewed all the way, the mechanism actually started to contract again, which caused the wedge. So tightening it about 1 turn allowed it to freely slide over the tube. Also, there was a tear in the seat right out of the box. I'm definitely not going to disassemble this thing to ship it back, so I'll have to figure out how to repair it.
Good Quality Chair Perfect for My Varidesk
I am a bookkeeper and spend 90% of my time standing (since undergoing my 4th back surgery) at my adjustable height Varidesk. I bought the Hon Volt adjustable height stool and LOVE it. It took me less than 10 minutes to assemble but the box is really heavy and my office is upstairs so I had to have it brought up for me.
Comfortable!
Found it to be very comfortable and the height I was looking for. I have a high desk and every chair I got was too low. The only thing I don't care for is the foot rest, it's too high for me even at its lowest.
This chair has a great look and is very comfortable.
Well built - a quality chair
This chair is exactly as described and is of a quality that should last many years. It went together in less than five minutes and the hydraulic cylinder worked properly both going up or down. I would purchase the chair again.
These office chairs have held up a lot better than I thought that they would in our offices. They have lasted through some heavy use and they are still nice to sit in.

Anthem; Consumer Advocate Just got this chair so there may be an update, if appropriate. First impressions: Very sturdy and high quality. Please know that I have purchased other chairs very recently, (See my reviews), and the construction of this chair is MUCH better. Solid, easy to assemble, and appears to just be better overall. I really like the way this chair can easily adjust from a regular task/desk chair to a taller stool. It is ideal for use in my recording studio. The warranty is fantastic on this product. I definitely will buy HON again and wish I had bought another HON for my office versus the one I bought of another brand/seller. Please note; watch prices carefully on any chair purchase. As was with the OTHER seller, things can be marked up significantly above retail. Love this chair so far!
Good for the price
Not a bad stool but has a few drawbacks. Because of the offset design the foot ring cannot be lowered all the way down to the top of the stool legs. So at a fairly low stool height the foot ring it too high to use.

This is a well constructed chair with one notable exception. After ~ 2 months, the pneumatic column has begun to lower on its own: setting the chair to the desired height then sitting in the chair, the chair slowly descends on its own. I only weigh 180 lbs. so this should not be a weight issue. Update 4/2/15 - The chair no longer holds its height. Setting it about 2/3rds of the maximum height, the chair now descends on its own 90& of the tiime that it is used.

The LOW position of 22" Feels just a little high. (I'm 6'1" so for people with shorter legs I'm sure this is felt even more). When on the low set, the most used setting for me, I generally have my feet on the foot rail to prevent strain. It's perfect without the castors. It is very easily adjusted, well balanced at it's highest, (about 32), however, because I use the foot rail at ITS lowest when the chair is low, I can't reach it when the chair height it at the highest. The foot rail IS adjustable but it is a hand crank screw type set which takes a little coordination to adjust and a couple of re-tightentings. It should float with the chair height adjustment but unfortunately it does not. That being said, to do what it does makes it the perfect solution for me where I have limited space with Desk/Counter/Bar height surfaces all at hand which become much more useful with the adjustable chair height. It is fairly comfortable in a "Working Comfort" kind of way, i.e. "You won't be sore, but you sure won't take a nap".
Sturdy, clean lines, made well
This stool came the day after I ordered it online. Took my husband and an engineer friend thirty minutes to put it together as directions are not as concise and complete as needed.
