Battery issue & hazard drags down a cool product
I was so excited to buy this mirror a couple of years ago. Its compact travelability, paired with adjustable light brightness and warmth, sealed the deal for me. Unfortunately, I didn't get much use from the mirror because the battery pack is now bloated, which is especially dangerous with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. I had stored the mirror away for a little while this year for various space and use reasons, and when I recently went to pack it up for a move, I saw the battery bloating to the point I couldn't close the back cover, and the battery wouldn't charge properly. After searching around online to understand what was going on, it looks like 1) this isn't a super rare fluke with some Riki products; 2) this bloated battery pack is risky to have around; and 3) the batter bloat is a result of overcharging the mirror. I'm not used to having to "babysit" any of my rechargeable electronics, as someone else in the reviews mentioned. And, unfortunately, I don't think I remember seeing any glaring warning in the instructions about the risk of overcharging the battery nor any recommendations for approximately how long the mirror should be charging at maximum to prevent this bloating. For the price point on this mirror, I'm deeply disappointed that the battery packs are prone to this issue *and* that customer service doesn't flag the hazard more seriously when someone contacts them about the issue. So far in the exchange I've had with CX, there has been no clear recommendation for how to safely and responsibly dispose of the defunct mirror. Now, because the mirror is beyond the one-year warranty and was purchased through Bloomingdale's, I'm out ~$150 and would have to spend ~$85 to get a replacement (customer service offered 50% off of a new one) that I assume carries the same risks. Unless RLR has updated the materials they include when shipping the mirror out, and/or made improvements on the manufacturing of the battery pack and charging components, then I can't recommend this at all.
I wish the batterry was better and lasted longer
It was great while it worked which was unfortunately not for very long. I would say I had about a year's use out of it before it became problematic. I would have to constantly charge it, the mirror would not give a lot of battery life so it was frustrating if I was working in low light and the light around the mirror would suddenly die. And then it stopped working completely. The stand became "loose" as well so would open too wide, luckily the grips on it sometimes helps it slipping. The mirror is overpriced for the quality of its electronics and the fact that the accessories also fail. I like the protective case it comes in.
Battery issues
I really loved this for traveling and everyday use, but in less than 3 years after purchase I started having issues with the battery. Now it has completely stopped holding a charge and the battery has started to expand, rendering it unusable. For the price, I would have hoped to get over 3 years use. When I emailed the company they said it's over the 1 year warranty so they could only offer me a 10% discount on a new one, and that there's no option to replace the battery. Really disappointed!
Needs some adjustments, but so far pretty good
It’s a pretty good mirror. Lighting is great and love that it comes with different brightness settings and bluetooth. Keep in mind though the brighter the setting, the quicker it’ll drain your battery. Another thing I will say is that when it comes to charging it you do have to babysit it. If you over charge it frequently it will bloat the battery. I learned the hard way/: riki sent me a replacement for free though and it’s been at least a year so far and no problems since:)
