I will continue to buy Winsor Newton Watercolors!
Where would I be without Winsor Newton watercolors!!! All their colors are amazing!!! I paint Ancestral Home Portraits, along with Ancestral landscape portraits!
Fun little granulation set.
The paints granulate nicely, but I am newer to granulation so take my opinion here with a grain of salt. The colors are different enough that it doesn't feel like I got 6 tubes of the same paint. I am happy with my purchase. These tubes should last me awhile. They do shrink if you put them in pans, but they re-wet easily enough.
A must have
Washes don't always create true pastels, and sometimes, like with a blonde "tow headed" child...it is really difficult to get a blonde that's not yellow! And in landscapes, sometimes floral need that extra solid pastel worked into an underlayment. And then there is that tiny speck of light, that makes something perfect. Titanium is very opaque!
Winsor & Newton is Great!
French Ultramarine: the hue is beautiful, but it is highly granulating. If you like granulation, then this color is great for you! But I prefer watercolors with less granulation, so I will be purchasing the Ultramarine Blue (Green Shade) in the future. Overall, Winsor & Newton is an affordable and reliable brand for watercolors. #sweepstakes
Great purchase if you shop online
This was one of those impulse purchases that happened because I was buying some other watercolor supplies on Blick, saw it, and thought, "That could be useful." I'm doing a lot of online shopping for supplies these days, and it's really nice to be able to see what I can actually be getting instead of just having to stick to the colors I already know or having to take a risk based on the color I see on my phone--only to discover that I really don't like how blue or pink or whatever a particular option is after I've already bought it and waited for it to be delivered. Do I really *need* more paints? Probably not, but do I love trying new things even if I don't absolutely need them? Yes, yes I do, and this makes it as much fun as browsing at the store.
A beautiful earth violet!
A lovey and dark, almost violet earth brown color! The pigment is rich and opaque but not chunky or too thick. It has mild granulation but nothing chunky like you'd find with Daniel Smith. This makes the paint a nice mixer and easy to handle, I love it! Mix it with ultramarine blue for a lovely purple gray that wonderful for shadows! #sweepstakes
A flawless earth red!
I've tried another venetian red and this one is soooo much nicer! The paint is creamy and smooth, not chunky or overly granulating. This version is also richly pigmented making it quite opaque, but it thins out smoothly, not streaky at all. The diluted color is a soft reddish- flesh color that's similar to quin burnt scarlet. I find that it mixes very well too, making beautiful grays with blue, specifically prussian blue. #sweepstakes
I love this cerulean blue!
The real cerulean blue with PB35! This version practically glows, it's just so beautiful! What's the difference between PB35 and Cerulean PB36? This version is lighter and slightly greener, and appears as a more delicate blue color. It's gorgeous! #sweepstakes
The nicest Cobalt Violet
A one of a kind pigment and color!! This version of cobalt violet is very vibrant and bright! The only downside is that the cobalt settles very badly inside the tubes. You need to shake them violently to get the pigment dispersed. I had one tube that was mostly binder, with very little color, but Blick quickly sent me a good replacement! Thanks Blick! #sweepstakes
Granulating Yellow- here it is...
Nice granulating color. I purchased this to bump out my granulation collection and fill out my Schmincke volcano set (I only had three--no yellow). From what I can tell, this color is more vibrant than the one that came with the Schmincke set. There are few granulating yellows sold commercially, but I'm told if you grind your own paints, many pigments can be "granulating." So this is a nice convenience tube but I wish it was cheaper.
Tiny dots.
I regularly use Winsor & Newton professional watercolor paints and love them! I wanted to add some colors to my palette, so I purchased the dot card to help me decide which to purchase. I was surprised and disappointed to see how tiny the paint dots were. The dots were so teeny, there was hardly enough paint to do a little color mixing or play around with after I swatched, making my purchasing decisions more difficult. I also purchased the Daniel Smith dot card which provided a lot more paint and that was very helpful because it allowed me to work with the paint and give me clarity on which colors would be the best additions to my palette.
Elegant design
Very elegant design! It's perfect for my use case, which was trying to test out the textures and properties of different pigments and formulations. It's a very small amount of paint, at least compared to what you'll get from dot cards from some other brands, but it was enough for what I needed to do, and the sheer beauty and quality of the card and the paints more than made up for the quantity. I'll definitely keep this around as a reference - it's super well-organized! I only wish they also made one for their gouache!
The Travel Tin, Set of 12 is perfect for beginners
I'm so happy with these W&N watercolors that I don't think I'd even consider trying another brand at this point. The quality is fantastic, the color selection is unbeatable, and the price is very fair considering these points. I got started with the pans in the Customizable Travel Tin, Set of 12, and I think that was the perfect starting point. I've since switched to the tubes (I said this is "a solid value" and not "a fantastic deal" because I think the tubes are a better value) and have amassed quite the collection (I have 31, and just placed an order for 2 more). I'm in love!
Good to try out
It was a fun exercise to fill out this dot card with all the swatches of the different colors. It's very helpful to be able to try the watercolors and see the different options Winsor & Newton has to offer. There isn't much paint to do much else with if you want to see how the colors interact with each other or anything. I wasn't super impressed with the quality of this paint. I have been spoiled with a few Daniel Smith watercolors, which I think have more vibrant colors and seem to paint better. But it may not be a fair comparison, since the samples on this card are so small and difficult to activate. #sweepstakes
Love these paints!
I just purchased Winsor and Newton watercolors for the first time and I love them so much. Winsor Yellow Deep is jewel-like and I have used it to paint mandalas. This is excellent watercolor and I truly do think of this color collection that I purchased as my favorite jewels. That's because I LOVE art and have been painting in various media for longer than I'd admit. Excited I am to have such quality! And.... I'm also glad there's a Dick Blick selling so much variety online
You really only need one
At first I didn't know what I was supposed to do with it, but eventually saw that I was supposed to use it as a swatch card. I love that. I also love knowing all the colors in the line. I'm a completist that way. I know that if I were a better artist, I wouldn't need all of the colors, but I am not. I think that harkens back to childhood when I all I wanted was 64 set Crayola crayons. I don't necessarily think I need another one, but I do appreciate the one I have.
Excellent Quality
I have several W&N watercolor paints and use their mediums (granulation, gum arabic, and texture) - all are fantastic products.
Fabulous Products/Great Customer Service
I have recently fallen in love with watercolor painting! Had been borrowing my friend's paints for about 6 months. But jumped in and bought some of my own. The Winsor-Newton professional watercolor collection is amazing. The pigments are spot-on, and they mix beautifully. I did an online order with "another" art supply company and I got 2 tubes of Chinese White that were so dried out I could not even squeeze the paint from the tubes. I am not saying they sent me those on purpose. But obviously they either do not store their product correctly or it was old. Ordered from Blick, and my tubes came quickly and in perfect condition! I also love the little historical note about the company when I opened the box. Obviously Blick Art Materials has been getting it right for over 100 years. I am a fan for life! Will always order from Blick and will cue up a list of brick and mortar stores so I can visit in person. The first store I ever went to is in Edina, MN and it bowled me over!
