Reviews

I very much like this umbrella. I have only had it in place for a few days so time will tell, but the overall quality seems very good. The fabric is heavier than other umbrellas I have purchased in the past which gives it a better quality appearance and feel, it appears to be very sturdy but the best part is the method in which you slant the canopy. I am a short person so in order to slant the canopy on other umbrellas as tall as this one I would have to stand on a ladder. But the method in which California Umbrellas has created to perform this function is a deal changer! You just turn a collar just above the crank handle and that makes the adjustments. My only complaint is that no where in the description of the umbrella did it give you instructions on how to operate this function. I first tried to slant it at the top of the pole (on a ladder) as you do on other umbrellas but found no button. So I went back to the web description at Home Depot and California Umbrella and could not find any instructions. It was something a customer said in their rating that directed me on how to perform this function. They just mentioned how easy it was just to turn the collar and that is when I realized what that collar was just above the crank. Like I said, time will tell on how well this product holds up but at this point I would recommend it to others and I plan to purchase it again for other areas of my back yard when the time comes.

Sad to report this umbrella is really poor quality. We have had it since June 2024. And today I am returning August 2024 because it no longer cranks up.

Shade when we want it!

We like California Umbrellas because they’re made with high quality Sunbrella materials and will likely last many years. We have the same product in a smaller size and have been extremely pleased with that product as well. We use these in our Swimming Pool Cabo area. The shade protects our sweet little grandkids while they are enjoying their day in the pool.

Very nice looking umbrella. The 11 foot size is nice for a large area and I really like they way this umbrella tilts. Has a collar that you turn to tilt. The fabric of the umbrella is a heavy duty feeling mesh like material. The umbrella itself has 3 different panels which allows higher winds to somewhat pass through.

Easily broke

Way over priced, couldn't stand up to a slight breeze as the hinge point snapped. The crank system to tilt is hard to use as well especially for my wife. Returned and bought a $66 umbrella which is way better. Save yourself some money, don't buy this.

Nice Umbrella, Be Careful on Color Choice

The umbrella was easy to assemble, and my wife and I are happy with it. I'm only giving 4 stars because my chosen color, Woven Sesame, is several shades lighter in reality than what you see in the online picture. It's much closer to the color option Champagne. It works for us, but if you're really counting on something as brown as the picture of Woven Sesame, check the other options.

This umbrella is really nice and I love the dark blue canopy. I’m hoping the canopy material will last many years. I’m located in Southern California so we do get intense sun and heat in the summer. And lately we’ve also had a lot of windy days and a lot of rain the last 2 winters. The umbrella is a little bit difficult to open and close. It’ll take some time getting used to but there’s a pin on top that you need to remove and then gently lower the string to close the umbrella.

I received an outdoor umbrella from Influenster and I love it. I put it outside in the garden. The sun shade really makes me enjoy it. The umbrella I placed in the garden,... In addition to protecting against sun and rain, the parasol also increases the aesthetics of the space, making it more attractive and beautiful.

California Umbrella - Horrible Customer Service

First, the umbrella itself is a good product, however, Home Depot advertises the shaft of the umbrella as being "white", whereas it is actually "grey". I emailed California Umbrella four times over a span of two weeks and spoke to them three times before they finally indicated that the "grey" shaft is their "white". So, if you are counting on receiving a "white" shaft umbrella, find another manufacturer.

Love our new umbrella. The vents assist the wind in getting through. If it gets terribly windy of course we close it. Also like the larger umbrella, the tilting. We are very happy with it and will be storing soon for the winter. Hoping next year it will hold up for the duration of summer. If I’m able to review at end of summer in 2024 I will. Thank you Home Depot for the rapid shipping.

not as expected

*BOUGHT ONLINE. I ordered what appeared to be 2 green colors - they are exactly the same. I would have lived with that if the umbrella fabric were not so awful. This is definitely NOT SUNBRELLA fabric. Not even a comparable product. Received them today - will attempt to return them tomorrow. After seeing the quality of the fabric (which I assumed since it said "SUNBRELLA" that it would be SUNBRELLA - I stopped unboxing them and took the picture below. Hope Home Depot will refund/exchange them.

I'm impressed. I dislike nothing about this umbrella. This is what a patio umbrella should be, nothing cheesy. It is a large super high quality elegant addition to our patio. I expect this will last for a very long time, on the order of 10-20 years if well cared for. My guess is that the stitching will fail from UV exposure before the fabric or the frame have problems. The canopy is Sunbrella fabric, which is hard to beat. The frame thick and substantial and well constructed with lots of fasteners. When the umbrella is deployed it is very rigid with no flex or bending. It is nearly all metal, mostly aluminum, except for the end caps on the tubes which are plastic. That's ok...as it is an appropriate place for a plastic part. Nothing structural is plastic. The pulleys, finial, and all parts are very high quality. I really like the nice stainless steel pulleys, up top, nice touch. There is a feeling of quality in the components and they look good too. This style does not have the convenience of a crank or tilt, but I'm sure it will outlast those sorts of umbrellas many times over. This is the second of this model umbrella I have purchased, the first was last year. Last year's purchase is identical and has held up in winds, torrential downpours, and is a very sturdy item. I think California Umbrella hit this one out of the park. Finally! A super high quality patio umbrella. It's not inexpensive, but it seems to be well worth the cost. It ships in a long box and the center pole is one piece, which again is great if you are buying for the long haul. I absolutely recommend this without reservations.

Nice Upgrade

I returned a 9' umbrella (which I liked but I needed more shade and the tilt function) and upgraded to this 11 footer (w/ collar tilt). My 80 lb. base will need some added weight (which I've been able to add both at the base and by adding weight to the table - on a shelf about 14" from the bottom). It is stable now in moderate wind conditions. I also figured out that expanding the canopy slightly less than 100% allows the wind vents to perform their function. If the canopy is too "tight," the vents are closed. Obvious stuff perhaps, but I'm an umbrella rookie - and a happy one!

I like the size of the umbrella and the color of the fabric (Terrace Sequoia). It provides nice shade. I like that it is a crank and auto-tilt although a bit difficult to crank as you get close to fully open. What I don't like is that it doesn't appear to be as sturdy as it should; it waves back and forth in the slightest breeze. Since I was able to apply a coupon that reduced the cost, I can live with it. . . Update 6/17/22 I hate this umbrella. I now would rate it 1 star. As mentioned before, the pole is not sturdy. Additionally, the umbrella ribs do not stay in the "pockets" of the umbrella fabric. The rubber tips on the end of the rib stays in the 'pocket' so you have to dig it out and put it back on the end before re-inserting the rib when you try to open the umbrella. The fabric vents don't always properly overlap when opening so that is something else that needs to be adjusted. When the umbrella is closed, the straps to secure it are not in the middle of the umbrella ribs but near the tips and the straps are not long enough. This makes it very difficult to secure the umbrella when not in use.

Frame Bent

We have had this umbrella for 2 years. Always put it away in the winter. Covered it from the sun during summer. Always took lowered the umbrella if it was windy. Today the frame above the crank bent almost in half so it is now usless. The winds today according to Accuweather were 8 MPH with gusts to 10 MPH. Clearly not a windy day. Tried to upload a picture to the review but I kept getting unexpected errors so sorry --no picture. For the price of this umbrella the pole should not bend in half. I have had umbrellas at the beach where we had significant winds and had no problems.

It broke but Cal Umbrella replaced the broken part

I bought this same umbrella in March 2020. Thought it was well made and a bargain compared to other options. So I ordered a 2nd one in September. Before I got the new one, the first one broke and cannot be repaired. The collar tilt mechanism failed (the cable that controls tilt snapped in 6 months). That is not good. However Cal Umbrellas approved a new frame at no charge. I will install the old canopy on the new frame. A failure like this after 1 year will require trashing the umbrella with no refund or consideration to the customer. They could say we’ll sell you a new frame for half price, for example. My experience is that even expensive umbrellas that have the cable snap cannot be repaired by the user or a handyman.

1st impression less than 1 week

The fabric color (spectrum aztec) is a little lighter than it appears on line - it is teal. The fabric seems to be good quality as do the ribs and mechanism. On the down side the umbrella is too tall - over nine feet and that's taller than it needs to be. I have it on my deck and it doesn't need that kind of height to clear the rail. I may take a hack saw to it when the warranty is out. My concern with quality is with the fact that pole seems very flimsy the bottom piece especially. The top is a loose fit into the bottom pole allowing for wobble and my concern is that wobbling could cause wallowing. I'm hoping that the pole is sturdier than it seems but it is very light weight and doesn't inspire confidence. The umbrella is beautiful and for that reason we are going to keep it and hope for the best. I am recommending it because the fabric and mechanism seem to be top quality. But how much more could a stouter pole cost? Surely not much. I'm not going to use the tilt because from past experience a tilted canopy will catch even the slightest breeze putting even more stress on the pole (twisting as well as rocking). I'm giving it 3 stars because of the flimsy feeling wobbly pole. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars.

The fabric and size are nice. At first we really loved the umbrella, but then it broke after only 8 months. The tilt mechanism is poorly designed and just broke after 8 month in the backyard. No super strong winds. Whenever there was a windy weather, we always tried to collapse the umbrella. But now, after tilt mechanism has broken, it just always falls on one side. Another week point is on the tube right below tilt mechanism, as it expanded due to umbrella wobbling around, so it gets impossible to collapse it as the metal of the tube expanded and now blocks the plastic cylinder which holds the umbrella ribs and fabric. Kind of worked it around with some duck tape, but now it makes it even more of a hustle to collapse the umbrella. Similar umbrella from a different brand worked more than 2 years until it eventually broke. Wanted to love it, but can’t recommend it now.

Seems great so far. This is the only place I know that sells the 11 ft diameter umbrellas, and that extra 2 feet really makes a difference in the amount of shade. The crank works well. The tilting option is easy to use. Everything seems well built and sturdy, as usual. I have previously had several of these umbrellas. They stay out on my deck from May through October. I usually get several years (3-5) use out of them before they need replacing. The fabric always holds up, it's the mechanical bits that go for one reason or another.

Very impressed with the fast delivery. Package was intact and the umbrella in perfect condition. The hardware and covering are high quality and look great. The pully lift mechanism is smooth and very easy to raise/lower. I was particularly impressed with the collar tilt system. I've never seen this before, but instead of pushing a button that pinches your finger to tilt, the easy to hold collar that sits directly above the pully operates the tilt mechanism. It is smooth and located in a great spot, allowing you to adjust the tilt without even standing up!
