Quality went downhill
Top shelf is leaning and shallow. Grill grates are cheap quality. Lid hits the arms of shelf when closing. Quality went downhill.
You just can’t go wrong with a CHARBROIL GRILL. MY HAS HAD HIS OLD ONE FOR 4 YEARS! And it is still usable!! He won’t cook on anything but a CHARBROIL AMERICAN GOURMET 840 BARREL GRILL. HAS SHELVING. THERMOMETER! WARMING SHELVES.
I’ve owned this grill for many years and really like it. It’s easy to clean out and it cooks the food evenly. From what I remember it wasn’t too much of a pain to put together and I was able to buy some replacement grills for it when they got rusty.
My first grill I ever bought. I absolutely love how easy it is to use, clean and store. We’ve used it countless times and ready for another summer full of grilling. Easy enough for me to use without burning anything! Can’t wait to grill some more
Good purchase
What did I dislike about this purchase was putting it together took longer than I expected. What I like and feel about this purchase is it's a nice size grill and a sturdy one also. The racks are cast iron plates.
Great value-great grill
This was a well made grill for under 100.00. The metal will last. The wheels could stand to be just a little sturdier, but overall we are very pleased with the quality for the price we paid.
Very pleasantly surprised by the grill. Good quality. Easy assembly. And it cooks fantastic. Ive used it multiple times now and have had good outcomes. Pleased with the purchase.

The grill was at a great price. It arrived with everything intact. It is a very high quality grill that will probably last a lifetime. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the grill.
Rusted out bottom…
I got this grill and protective cover for Xmas last year. This thing was completely covered I’ve used this grill about 20 times this summer and the bottom is completely rusted! The paint flaked off after the second use. Going to ask for better brand next time!
The Best Grill Ever!!
I really like that this grill has cast iron grates. This grill is the perfect size for a family of two and a few friends. I love that I found this grill on sale. This is a heavy duty quality grill, I will order a grill cover for the grill to make sure it lasts for a for years. I will be grilling a lot of veggies.
Product came severely damaged.. On a Tuesday I was going to put together this grill for Saturday. Called Walmart to have another one overnighted but they couldn't accommodate that.. Apparently it was pending the return of this one... So I canceled this altogether... As far as the grill I'm pretty sure it's well made.. The manufacturer should take more steps to protect it in the box like some Styrofoam around the inside perimeter. Could have been done by FedEx but this is a heavy box and one bump on a hard corner will do it.. This isn't a one off since I've seen similar complaints. This is just such an inconvenience that I think, with proper planning can be avoided more. Now I have to lug this heavy thing back to the front of the house for pickup.
Pros and Cons
This is a very well-built grill. My last grill was an Acorn (like the egg) so I like this grill because it has a very large grilling surface. What I don't like is it isn't as airtight as my Acorn was. So when I'm done grilling and close it all up, the charcoal doesn't extinguish (so I can save as much as possible and reuse). Also temp doesn't get quite as high as the Acorn. With a full chimney of charcoal, I was able to get it up to 450. My Acorn got up to 550 and that's the temp you want for a nice sear. But overall, it's a great grill for the price, well made and does it's job well.
AWESOME GRILL FOR THE BUCK
After giving my parents my Weber grill, I needed a grill for the house fast. My new Char-Broil grill is used at least 2-3 times a week, mostly to grill some ribs, chicken and burgers. Sometimes my Son, the chef, will come over and grill some salmon and a variety of vegetables. I really enjoy the smoke stack and different levels for the charcoal. I just wish it had a built in bottle opener and a place to hang my utensils. Overall, I give it a 9.5 out of 10.
Falls Advertising.
If you buy this grill from Ace hardware you will get American gourmet. Not Char Broil. There is a big difference. So what do I do, take it apart and put it back in the box then figure out how to return it. Most likely more trouble then its worth. The sticker they put on the hood took several attempts to remove and still not fully removed. I guess I will just deal with it.
I love the Grill. would buy it again.
We bbq when ever the family gets together. it was easy to assemble. But the heavyness was too much for me. I was fortunate to have help in setting it up to use. my family was impressed with my new grill. we hadn't bought a new one in ten years. When I saw the BJ's ad, and it was a charcoal grill ( didn't want gas) and the plus was that it was on sale, could be ordered on line, and delivered to me, made my day.
It's an ok grill
I've used it two times so far, bought it's about 3 weeks ago. The first time I used it, the paint began to peel and bubble, then the bottom of the grill started smoking, I thought for sure the whole thing was about to ignite. This happened at around 500°F. Other that that, is a very good grill. My only other complaint would be the channeling of the grease. If you have meat on the top rack with the cover opened, the grease from the meat drips on the cover which in turn drips it to the floor.
Broken weld on the hinge 1 hr into first use
Bought this and the welded hinge broke 1hr into it's first use. Called Charbroil for warranty and they don't have any lids and will not send a replacement grill. It will be 2+ months to get a replacement lid and make this grill useable again. I was on the phone for literally 6 hours in total handling a number of issues. First they said they don't have any lids in stock then the next day said they were supposedly going to send a lid and pins in 5-10 business days. They I received only the pins in a 8 inch bubble mailer with an invoice inside that says this package contains a Lid and Lid pins. (Obviously the lid of a grill can not fit in an 8inch bubble mailer but the pins did). I requested the tracking number for the grill lid (which they could not find) and I also confirmed that they have not received any grill lid replacement pieces since my initial request and instead of accepting their mistake they went on to insist that FedEx most have lost the grill lid. I have lost literally all confidence in CharBroil and their ability to handle their own Warranty claims at this point. In the end I bought a grill from BJ's that is unusable and not returnable and I will not have a grill for months (all summer) because CharBroil is not doing anything to fix the problem. Char-Broil is good for nothing.
A sturdy Dinosaur with many faults!!!
The times I have used this item the temperature gauge has not worked "AT ALL". It might be sturdy but that is all it has going for it. Now I have to purchase a temperature gauge for this Dinosaur. I have only used it for Rib steaks and Pork loins. A functioning gauge is important to me. There are probably guys and gals who might think I am making a big deal over a gauge, so be it. When I purchase an item, I hope that everything is accounted for and will perform as expected. I'm sorry I received this item from my girlfriend as a gift. If I had been involved in choosing a grill, I would not have picked this particular one.
This grill has everything I need. I’m big fan of charcoal grills. You just don’t get that same flavor from a gas grill. I do feel like there can be some improvements to the thermometer gauge. The readings are not always accurate. Just be careful with that. Other than that it works flawlessly. It has 2 racks that makes it easy to cook a variety of things. It looks great and doesn’t take up a lot of space. Mine is about 5 years and it’s still in perfect condition uncovered during the weather. This one is a winner.
Heavily built and large enough for a family BBQ
This is my first Char Broil and it is quite impressive.
