VERY initial review; will supplement later as needed. Review is for 5SC-1000 (Tower-style) Just received last night. It was cold out, so brought it in and let it sit inside overnight to equalize temp and lose any condensation risk before plugging it in. Arrives with battery disconnected for safety, wires are pretty darn firm and stiff, requires effort to make a good solid connection which is probably a good thing. Box indicated my unit was built Sept 2020 and had a 'recharge battery by June 2021' date on it. Plugged in and started up and was immediately dismayed at how loud this thing is. After turn on, battery indication on screen appears to show it is fully charged already, yet fan has been on steady since plug in about 2.5hrs ago. I have a very small load only currently plugged into it (LED desk lamp) and on. If this doesn't get quieter after 12-24 hrs to allow for some sort of deep cycle full charge magic, I may have to decide if I want to send it back (this is installed in an office to supply my computer and 3D printer - no way I need that level of fan aggrevation all the time) or void my warranty by modding in a reasonably good fan instead. Really sad that for nearly 300USD they cheap out on the ONE noise generating component (aside from the alarm piezo which of course is *supposed* to be loud, ha ha). EDIT - After 6 hours or so the fan did back down in noise, and has remained lower even with load on the unit (I've maxed about 6 amps so far). So raising to 4 stars but it is still not "silent" by any means, and may still consider an aftermarket fan replacement, as my own risk of course.

This is the second of these Eaton units I've purchased, my other one being the 700VA unit. It seems very well made and the batteries are easily replaceable. The unit is completely silent while in normal operation, it is only noisy when running off the batteries. My total power consumption hovers around the 300W mark, leaving me with about 15 minutes of battery run time at this load. Eaton started the open source NUT (Network UPS Tools) project, so obviously this unit works perfectly with the NUT tools, but my setup is a little different as I'm plugging the USB into a Synology NAS, but I have a Debian based Proxmox server also connected to the unit. My setup goes like this, NAS and Proxmox server (a Dell R710) along with some POE network gear plugged into the UPS. I want the servers shutting down after a couple of minutes to leave the remaining battery power for the network gear. I achieved this by plugging in the NAS to the USB, since Synology has a built in NUT server that you can connect clients to, the only drawback being all clients need fixed IP addresses you can only list five IPs, but you can easily get around both limitations by just using a proxy server the clients connect through. So the NAS sees the UPS on battery and begins shutting down, so Proxmox server's NUT client sees the event and begins shutting down as well. The main gotcha issue was that when I tested everything by pulling the power cable, the Synology shut itself down and then immediately the UPS turned off. This was resolved by unchecking a box in the Synology UPS config that tells it to do this. However, just as a heads up for everyone, I had the same issue with my 700VA unit when connected to a Windows computer and this was due to the default behavior of the Eaton UPS companion software. Eaton confirmed there's no way to disable this without using the Intelligent Power Protector software instead. So if you want your UPS to stay on after shutting down your Windows computer, make sure you use the IPP software instead of the UPS Companion software.

The "Eaton" name carries a LOT of weight. Their products are ubiquitous in the chemical plant that I work in. So I am sold on that. I own 3 of these devices and they are working well. The one thing that I do not like is that these units are noticeably noise-some. Yet, even with the slight noise increase, I would fully recommend these units over the APC offerings. APC has let me down in the past more than once.

First of all, I purchased this in the hopes it would run my instant on hot water heater (this is mostly a natural gas system that needs an electrical pilot light to ignite the gas as well as do some general electrical monitoring in the background). I didn't think I would need a lot of power for this. However, my manual did indicate it needed a pure sine wave output. I hoped this would fit the bill and couldn't find the relevant sine wave information anywhere on Home Essentials Direct. On receipt, everything was fine. It was confusing as to whether there was a battery or not. There is, it is not hooked up however. You need to open the front cover and manually connect the leads. This was actually not super easy as they didn't connect very easily (despite looking pretty simple). This was also not covered in the manual. The manual does say the device "must not be used to supply other electrical equipment (lighting, heating, household appliances" -- information that would have been useful in the description. It did work to power my computer. It didn't work to power my hot water heater.
