Beautiful Bookcase and Easy to Assemble!

I purchased four of these bookcases. I'm a 60+ year-old woman and was able to assemble them myself (although I had my husband anchor them to the wall). The instruction manual is by far the best technical writing I've seen (because it was probably written by a native English-speaking person with good writing skills and a sense of humor). Normally I just wing-it when putting things together because the written instructions are so poor and confusing. In this case, however, Sauder made each step easy to follow. Everything was spelled out clearly with each piece of hardware identified. I even appreciated and got a chuckle out of the humorous side-notes in the manual, like "Remember, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey" and "Now might be a good time to refresh your drink." As for the bookcase itself, it's the "Chalked Chestnut" color and looks beautiful with the other room decor. The bookcase is sturdy and functional. It's made of pressed wood (particle board), so care must be taken when fastening the back onto the frame to ensure the nails are centered on the frame's edge. My only complaint is that the wall anchor is not hidden. It sticks up several inches on the wall over the top of the bookcase and sticks out like a sore thumb, so I will need to hide it with a little decoration of some kind. Overall, its good value for the money and doesn't look cheap. I'm very happy with my purchase and impressed with Sauder products.

Good product; one caveat

Nice inexpensive solution. However the bookcase sides should be one piece extending from floor to top. Not good that they are half-length & must be connected with dowels. This weakens the bookcase. Books are heavy.

Beautiful and sturdy!!

This bookcase surpassed my expectations and, for the price, is an incredible value. The wood is strong and real...not pressed fiberboard. It even smells great. And is solid as a rock. I just ordered a second unit!!

This shelf is great and serves its purpose

Its a good quality great looking bookshelf. It was easy to out together. One thing, not all parts were labelled. There are many parts for this. It would be more helpful if all parts are labelled. Other tham that its a good bookshelf.

Assembly was very difficult.

The routed mortise joints were rough and required hammering to make up the joints, and they were flimsy. Before I got the assembly complete the joint of B3 and K just pulled apart, leaving shards of particle board all over the table. I managed to cobble it back together with lots of glue and clamps and completed the assembly the following day. Also, only some of the pieces were coded, so I had to use the exploded view line drawing to identify P, N and several others. The covers for the "hidden cams" were nearly impossible to install. The shelf is finally complete and in service, but I will never do that again.

A great product

The pair of 5 shelf bookcases were easy to assemble. Everything lined up just right. Instructions were easy to follow. The nail holder was a pleasant addition since I last put bookcases together.

Not bad for the price

Looks good, my only concern is the shelves warping with time. If I can get three good years out of it, I'm satisfied...

Cardboard back

I nailed a furring strip down the back and added "L" brackets to stabilize this bookcase. It arrived with a small piece of the veneer already chipped off the top front corner, but it is not very noticeable after dabbing some stain on the spot. On the whole, I am satisfied with the purchase and hope it will withstand a move or 2 in the next few years as my teen goes off to college.

The pegs for the shelves come out easy. Also the back is super thin. So I give it a 4. It is a very beautiful shelf and I do love it.

I like my new bookcase, but ... !

My bookcase is functional, attractive, and seems fairly well constructed. I expect it to adorn my reading room for years. HOWEVER! Let's face it, a bookcase is essentially a box, but this box that took me, a person with a high mechanical aptitude, inordinate hours to correctly put together! The instructions provided would have been reasonably understandable if each of the twenty-two major parts were correspondingly labled. Atleast a quarter of mine WERE NOT labeled at all! The manufacturer's lack of quality control turned a relalatively simple do-it-yourself project into a brain-tease puzzle & an unnecessary waste of time. This is inexcusable, you folks at Sauder.Com!

Not Satisfied with Bookcase

Instructions aren't great and assembling wasn't easy. Some pieces not alignmening as they should. Difficult getting screws into the base and skirt. Also not easy getting back nailed on properly. Even cam covers will not properly align and stay in.
