Came quickly, looks solid
The weather suddenly dipped below freezing so I haven't had the chance to set it up yet. From pulling it out of the box it seems extremely solid, well made, and easy to work with. I like the larger top hole for easier cleaning, and it's heavy enough that it won't tip over when empty. The only thing I don't like so well is the overflow which is just a plastic hose, I don't think that will hold up for years to come, but it should be easy to replace.
We purchased two Rain Catcher 4000 50 gal, and will buy more in the future. They are very heavy duty plastic barres with a design that has thought of everything to attach to it. The over flow, multi unit connector options, the easy cleaning screen design. Best part, a great water hose attachment with shut off, that also attaches to anther garden hose if needed.
Nicely designed and built rain barrel. Overflow port has a provided hose for diverting excess water away from fill site. I have attached it to divert overflow to my pond. Bottom attached hose is located to get all the stored water out when needed. It attaches easily to my garden hose to drain stored water to my pond during times of draught. Looks good and functions well.
A Barrel of Fun
A solid rain barrel that looks nice, but is a bit smaller than others. Luckily you can connect it to one or more companions. I like the brass faucets, but keep in mind the screw thread it is going into is still plastic. Use the teflon tape that comes with the barrel. There are a couple of ways to direct rainwater into the barrel. I’m using a hose from a gutter on my shed, so I drilled out one of the connectors and inserted brass fittings held on by a gear clamp. Works great.
Poor overflow drainage
While the barrel itself is sturdy, the overflow hose is very flimsy and does not stay attached with the fastener provided. It is also NOT the size that you can easily get a sturdier hose or tube to fit on it. I had to buy a separate adapter kit and hose to try and handle the overflow and get the excess water away from the house...that made the whole process more work/trouble than I expected.
Barrel is good, spigots not so much
I purchased these (2) with the matching stands only to discover that the spigots are too restrictive for a gravity feed system. I had to go to my local Home Hardware store and bought 2 spigots with a much bigger opening through the valve. The spigots provided are 3/4 inch pipe thread but the opening is about 1/8 or less with the valve fully opened. This would be appropriate on a water system that is pressurized to help prevent too much flow, such as a hose connected to your home. The barrel itself would get a 5 star but because it comes with these substandard spigots, it only deserves a 1 star. It would be better off being sold at a lower price with no spigots provided than with useless spigots that you pay for but can’t use.
Great looking barrel
Decent-sized rain barrel for collecting from your downspouts. The flat back lets it sit right up tight to the house to match the downspouts. Seems a bit lightweight in my opinion, but it does the job it was bought for.
Hose attachment is not good. Very small and too short to replace the hose if need be. I receive a barrel as a gift and the hose was missing. Hose hole leaks all the time and empties the barrel. Size is not standard and length too short to easyly attach a clamp for another hose which is an odd size. I not purchase this barrel all mine does is leak at bottom hose outlet Spray did not even work.
Delivered as ordered. Accessories all present from order. Timely delivery to the local Home Depot.
Too Expensive
Last time I got this, I was able to buy it on sale. It’s way over priced to buy at the regular price tag.
Michigan - meh
This isn’t great for our heavy rains that can last days. It fills within minutes directly from spout. The overflow pliable tube is lame and doesn’t divert enough overflow during storms. The tube is also very short so I put it inside a long accordion flow tube from the old gutter. The top screen isn’t threaded on, so you have to weight it down as the water pushes it up when full. The screen is delicate too and already has damage from debris. I dropped a mosquito puck in the barrel, but I really question with our strong rains and everything going straight into the barrel whether that effect even lasts the full 30 days. I’ll try drilling another overflow release with a very long plastic stiff tube inserted going off into the yard, but so far - this thing is dumping water out of the top right at my foundation and I’m regretting it entirely. Bad buy.
good and bad
This was a replacement when my old barrel fell apart. I like the slot for overflow tubing. It's nice to direct water instead of it running down the barrel when full. Big negatives are the screen on the lid developed a hole after being in place less than a week and I have zero water pressure with this barrel, preventing me from drawing through a hose to water the garden. My old barrel is the same size and I was even able to use a nozzle on my hose to water.
I was so happy with this rain barrel that I bought two more! The one pictured has been in use for over a year and I connected it to a soaker hose to keep the front garden watered. I've got two more in the backyard that I'm using for my veggie gardens. I live in Texas, so having multiple rain barrels is a must if you want anything to survive the hot, dry, Texas summers! I also highly recommend getting mosquito dunks for these barrels. The mesh cover will keep out leaves and bigger critters, but the mosquitos have no problem finding their way inside to lay eggs.
Great rain barrels
I’ve searched for awhile to find a good-sized rain barrel with an overflow hose and an open top. Although you can remove the screen top, the cross pieces prevent you from dipping a bucket into the barrel. But the water flows nicely through the hose, and the top is open enough to spray the barrel out when necessary. The plastic looks better (less shiny) in person than in the description photos. The barrel fills quickly with about 1-2 inches of rain, and the overflow system works great. If I had room, I’d link more barrels. The barrel was super easy to set up.
Hold Water
Does the job and holds water well. Spout at the bottom is pretty much useless unless you get the adapter and sit the barrel on top. When full, it’s very heavy, so not sure how long that plastic adapter will last.
The "spout" where the hose was supposed to attach was cracked at the top and would have broken off with any attempt to attach the hose. The inside is the barrel also contained a large about if tiny plastic bead-like pieces which were impossible to pour out for to the internal "lip" of the barrel. Package was not damaged in transit. Very disappointing quality
This is THE Rain Barrel to Get
It's a beast and very well built. The walls are very thick and not like a flimsy trashcan style. I sat it on a couple of cinder blocks and it is great. Although there are areas of improvement, I'm still giving it a solid five stars because of how well built it is.
Leaky
I paid a little extra thinking this is a clever design. But it is a poor design and poorly made.
Easy Use Barrel
This was perfect for my space. When empty, it is very easy to get the barrels in to place as they are quite light weight. The top screen is great to keep out mosquitos and with the downspout resting on top, withstood 70 mph straight line wind gusts. I opted to cut and zip tie a screen on the overflow valve rather than use the plastic drain to keep out any ground based bugs. It would be very easy to connect barrels if more water storage is desired. I have two barrels at opposite sides of the garden (that is where the down spouts are). Harvesting off of a 2 car garage, one rain storm of 3/4 - 1 inch of rain filled the barrels to overflowing. The drain hose is better than a faucet type of spigot that we reviewed on other barrels and will be easy to replace when necessary.
Just received my rain barrel and began to set it up. The entire part that is suppose to attach to the hose is poorly manufactured. It looks like someone chewed at the spigot area.
