These budget friendly industrial style end tables may fit your need. They have roomy storage below, a convenient shelf for laptop, reading material or knick-knack display and a wide tabletop for a lamp and other essentials. They are VERY easy to assemble. The construction material (smoothed plywood) shows its woodgrain through the paint.

Pain to assemble but a deal and looks nice

As a piece of furniture it works and fits the room nicely. However, building it is a real pain to do, since most of the wood items were unmarked with letters. Directions for construction can be a unclear at times, and the lock screws can sometimes not be flush into the furniture, which makes me second guess if I built it correctly. The biggest pain was screwing in the real screws on the bottom of the item without pieces falling out of place or alignment. Finally, nailing in the backboard is always my least favorite style of furniture since there's room for error and mistakes. Overall, solid piece of furniture, definitely a deal if bought as a two pack, but a real pain/struggle to assemble correctly.
