This box is THE SOLUTION for converting an octagon ceiling box that is nailed to the side of a joist (so many houses built that way in the 70's, 80's etc.) into a FAN RATED box. Remove the old metal box, slide this heavy duty plastic box up in it's place and then send the 3 screws home!!!! Done! You don't have to worry about centering between the joists and worrying about any other obstructions.
Sturdy and well designed for my application. The ground screw was hard to access after installation. I had 2 more after and pigtailed a ground before installation.
This box would seem an elegant solution for mounting a fan or heavy light when there is no robust box in place. The alternative is a bar - in my case, needing to span 24-inch-on-center rafters clogged with insulation. The heavy, hex-head screws, set at an angle are essential. Driving them with their Phillips-head impressions into hard pine was difficult to start (you will do better with a long Phillips-head bit) and impossible to continue after about halfway. A socket and wrench proved essential to set them fully. HOWEVER, the center screw seats between plastic ridges that are too deep to accommodate a socket on a 3/8-inch-drive handle with extension. I could fully seat the two side screws, but couldn’t get the center one all the way in. That’s plenty of tightness for a 25-pound fan. But it would seem a design flaw. One other issue related to my fan purchase: This box and the alternative bars were nowhere in sight around the fan displays. Help was hard to find, and the box said all mounting hardware was included, so despite my worries I would need such a box or bar, we left the store without this key item and had to order it.
Completely satisfied, except the screws
Works exactly as I hoped. Makes for an incredibly solid fan mount. The middle screw went in fine with a socket, but the plastic pockets that the outer screws are recessed into are too small to allow a socket to enter and tighten the screw all the way... then the philips head is useless. Save the trouble and get your own mounting screws when you buy it.
my contractor loved it
love the design, easy to install
couldn't use it screws are cheap junk
Excellent heavy duty product gives strong support for a ceiling fan. Used 5/16” socket to drive the support screws in, but had to finish with a Phillips bit because of the frame wouldn’t let it drive all the way. Uses 3/8 hex nuts to secure the fixture to the box. I will buy this again.
Worked great hanging a Ceiling Fan, would buy again.
Junk Hardware
Box is an excellent design for attaching to ceiling joist in old work. As others have said, the hardware is soft Chinesium garbage and easily strips out. Also snapped off one of the studs to secure mounting plate for fan.
Good Solution for Tight Spots
5/16" socket on an impact driver works best to put these screws into the ceiling joist. Took a long time with a ratchet.
Sturdy and functional with one big flaw
The box is nice and sturdy. Plastic doesn't give at all and it's reinforced with metal. The three screws for securing to a joist work well. The issue I had when trying to install a fan is that the two pre installed posts are WAY long and prevent the motor of the fan from being mounted, and you can't screw them in more or anything to adjust the length. I'm going to try to hacksaw them down a bit today so I can use this box and not have to remove it.
Not carried in my store, only online purchase
easy to use. this is so easy to replace an old celling fan mount
Box worked perfectly for my bathroom light replacement where there was no box and only a stud
Good, sturdy fan support box. Fan weight is about 35lbs. Box is rated at 75lbs. I like over built when it’s hanging over my head.
What a great product for old work, four inch hole, 3 screws, and you are done, will buy again.
Durable. Heavy duty.
Heavy duty, easy to install. I mounted in ceiling and the ceiling has the structural wooden I beams. I had to place some additional wood next to the bracket so that the junction box wasn't crooked. I replaced a standard box with this one in order to hang a ceiling fan.
strong fixture easy to install.
Works awesome!
Excellent for install showing fans and old work application
Suited our purpose perfectly though we really had to work at getting the attached screws to draw the electrical box tight up to the ceiling joist.
Ceiling fan box replacement
Very easy to replace the plastic box and side mount to the existing box
