Hard chunks sewn into the thick parts.
Looks nice but the rug has small, hard chunks of material embedded randomly throughout.. it looks like styrofoam but it's hard. So occasionally you'll feel like you've stepped on a pebble. Safavieh said that's "unusual" but it's not - I ordered two of these and both have the same issue. I recommend finding a different rug unless you really love the look of this one.
