Good but could be better.
My reasons for giving this 3 stars and not 5 is for the following.
Compact and holds a lot
got this to replace two other DVD shelves i had before, would have fit everything and then some, if it didnt force at least one shelf on each section to be "CD" size
Classy little storage space
I've wanted this little two-drawer cabinet for a long time and finally gave it to myself for Christmas this year. It not only looks good, it goes with everything in my home...AND it has two fairly deep drawers for very special treasures storage. Great purchase! Packed well for shipping, no damage, and I only had to attached the feet. Very pleased!
Space-saving and easy assembly
My husband and I put this together pretty quickly with no issues. We use it for storing games from all types of consoles (CD-, DVD-, and Blu-Ray-sized cases, etc), and it's great for easy access. I love that it's specifically for media, because before this, we had been putting games on bookshelves, but those are much deeper than this media shelf, so lots of depth space was unnecessary. This looks really nice next to our TV as well.
Nice Cabinet Lacks Sufficient Shelving
I have both CDs and DVDs, but I purchased this media cabinet to house mostly CDs. It does not come with enough shelves for me to do that. I've purchased media cabinets from other places, and they provide more than enough shelves so that you can configure your unit to fit your needs. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of shelves.
Fairly happy with the cabinet
I really like the cabinet. I just wish it would have come with 2 more door shelves and 1 more back shelf! I bought it for all of my CD's and I wanted more shelves to fit all of my CD's. Even if there was an option to purchase the extra shelves and pegs to place them, I'd be happier with this. The instructions weren't very clear as to how to place the doors before you put it all together. Had to take it apart and re-do the door placements.
Could be great but you'll do some work
The assembled piece is actually great. But the two stars is for the issues. First, the packaging it comes in doesn't protect it enough. One of my shelves was damaged and there were scratches in the wood. The packing material also stained the wood in places. They know this apparently because a detailing pen comes in the box. On top of that, the pieces come dirty, covered in saw dust. Saw dust falling out of screw holes. You have to clean everything up before assembly. The other issue is the groove and holes drilled so the cabinet can be locked were off making it impossible to lock unless I do some custom cutting to align the lock. If these things could be addressed it's a nice piece and holds a lot of media. One other observation is the holes for placing the shelves create some wasted space, limiting what you can store somewhat.I didn't find it hard to assemble but it does take time.
4 Stars
The media cabinet arrived in record time. The directions for assembly was a little confusing but I got it put together! Sturdy construction and well built. Only problem I had was as I got down to the last part of construction which was putting the locking mechanism on the door, I noticed a piece of the wood around the hole for the lock was chipped off and had been painted over to cover up the flaw! I was disappointed but had gotten so close to finishing I just ignored it. You can't really tell unless you are looking for it.
Not what I thought
Directions are insanely confusing to assemble this thing. The box and all predrilled holes came full of sawdust...its black and was full of scuff marks and scratches easily but no worries because they send a sharpie in the kit for you to color the cabinet in black with...no joke. Once I did get it put together it does house quite a few dvds which is nice and does what I want it to. Scratches easily, poor instructions for assembly, and the lock is not all that great if thats what your main purpose is for getting this I would not buy it.
Do Your Homework
Some thoughts on planning your assembly: first, take out the instructions and close the box. Read thoroughly, paying attention to the diagrams, the layout of each piece and the direction of the fastening devices. Second, remove all the components and inspect their condition. It's a heavy, 75 lb. box, so assume that the courier company will have damaged something. If so, call Prepac immediately as they will expect damage and missing pieces. They respond promptly in most cases. Have a vacuum handy, as the original case will be filled with sawdust. For the doors, take one of the intended screws and pre-tap the hinge holes (screw in & remove) - makes it SO much easier. And to lift the doors into position, use a couple magazines + some slim cardbord to align the hinges to the holes (not mentioned in instr). The locks are NOT pre-drilled, so have an awl, or simply use the nails supplied to start pilot holes. Last suggestion: don't install the back panel until last step - makes it much easier to align/install left door's rear lock. And if you have some wood screws, it's not a bad idea to place one in each corner of the back panel to add some rigidity. Most of all, be patient, read other people's reviews...and buy it on sale.
Ain't a fine piece, but, it ain't a bad piece.
If you have an equal amount of CD's and DVD's then you can fill the cabinet like the picture. If, however, you have way more CD's than DVD's like me, then you'll run out of shelves. I could use another long shelf and two more short shelves. As for the finish; they include a small black magic-marker to repair the scratches and scrapes that appear because of the very, very, very poor packaging and finish. As for the assembly; it was easy enough, but takes awhile. There isn't a lot of room to turn a screwdriver with your hand wrapped around it. Also be careful to orient the finished edges so their facing the part of the cabinet you can see. Or you will be disassembling the part of the cabinet you just assembled; go ahead, ask me how I know this. A fine piece of furniture it isn't.....But a nice piece that serves a useful purpose it is.
Fair to Okay
Needed storage for DVD and CD collection. Read reviews. Went with this one. Not sure its worth $140. It took us awhile to assemble as directions were a little confusing. Scratches and dings on the cabinet and some of the shelves - marker in supplies to use to cover any imperfections is not good. Tried it on one area - looks like kids took marker to the thing. Wish doors self closed and stayed shut. will have to install magnets. Will do the intended job but again, not sure its worth the overall cost.
It's Up To You
There are 2 reviews in here that I agree with which are:
5 Stars
We had been looking for awhile for a cabinet to store our DVD's and CD's. When we came across this one we decided to take a chance and order it. I have never ordered any type of furniture from the internet before, so I read the other reviews and decided to do it. After putting it together, we were pretty happy and ordered the second one. My neighbor helped me with the first one, and then I did the second one myself, so it wasn't too difficult. They fit perfectly on either side of our TV and they look clean and nice. They are fairly heavy and sturdy, so I would give them a good recommendation. Just keep in mind the doors swing open so they need a little space on either side.
Terrible item
If I could give this item a zero I would. First the item took longer to arrive then stated when purchased. Second when I got it and put most of it together which took forever, there was a piece of the door missing. I had to contact them just to get a new piece which took an additional week and a half to get to me. Just finished putting it together finally and the doors won’t stay shut unless I lock it. It’s too small and doesn’t actually hold the amount of DVDs stated in the description. I wish I had never bought this product. It’s not worth the price. I will never purchase from Home Depot online again.
Not Great
This is a terrible design. It’s meant to sit on the ground so why would there be handles right in the middle of the doors? They should be sitting at the top. So now I have to bend over to grab the handle to open it which is completely unnecessary.
Installation Level: Advanced
The installation level was set to Advance DIY mode. The pieces weren't labelled, so you needed to pay close attention to the pictures, the names of the pieces, everything to put it together correctly. I ended up putting one piece on backwards and if I hadn't caught it early, would have thrown the thing across the room. Of course, catching that error early and knowing to be aware of that requirement didn't stop me from putting the door on the wrong side at the end, but hey I figured it out when I got to the step about putting on the handles. Construction on my cabinet isn't fully completed, since I was given an extra piece I didn't need and had to order the missing part after the fact. Luckily, the instructions include directions on who to contact when this happens (so it must happen often). The good news is the ordering of parts was pretty good and I don't think I'm being charged for it. Regardless, I would highly recommend making sure all your parts are there before starting this beast. All that being said, if you are looking for a challenge and really want a nice looking media cabinet, then this is your project! I'm happy with the look and feel quite accomplished in my progress so far with the construction, but suspect i would have been just a good without having to order the piece.
Clean look
I was a little disappointed with these cabinets. The looks are nice and clean but the lock themselves are flimsy and ofow quality. The doors are not magnetized and stay closed by latches. I bought two and one of the cabinets swing open when the latches are undone and the other one doesn't. Not sure what I did differently when I put them together. The inner latch on the left door is deep so you can't have DVD or CDs on the shelf by the latch or else the door doesn't close therefore I can't fit as much inside. I think this was also a major design flaw along with the doors not being magnetized. The cabinet would have also been almost perfect if it was tall enough to allow 4 shelves where the DVDs could be upright. It allows enough for 3 rows of upright DVDs and 1 row of CDs upright. In hindsight, I wish I bought the taller cabinet but I really liked the detail on the doors. Looks more classy.
