This is definitely a heavy shelf, I thought there was a mistake when my shipment said 27 pounds but it is correct. The shelf comes in a few pieces to be assembled but it will only take a few minutes and includes the necessary allen wrench to do it. The shelf is secured to the wall by a cleat that is predrilled with several holes to fit your space , I was able to get mine to hit 2 studs easily and used a included wall anchor for the third. It is very secure once installed. The look of the shelf is very rustic, the natural wood sides have heavily exposed grain and I believe are solid wood. The parts that are painted grey have a nice blended variation to create the concrete look, those parts are constructed of a heavy and thick fiberboard like MDF. It looks great and will fit a industrial or rustic space well. The hooks are nicely spaced to take larger coats and purses and the whole unit is meant to hold up to 50 pounds as long as you get it anchored in a stud.
