Sewing Machine Restoration

I am restoring an old Singer sewing machine for my daughter on which the veneer was badly damaged. The best solution was to strip the old veneer and apply new veneer. I discovered that the old veneer was cherry so went looking for replacement veneer. Rockler had just what I needed. Rockler offers two PSA veneers and I chose the thicker of the two because the sewing machine is intended to be used. I prepared the substrate and the veneer went down very nicely. For my purposes, this veneer was perfect and easy to work with. I ended up with one small bubble but the instructions told how to deal with those. The reason for only giving this veneer 4 stars is because the veneer was damaged in shipment. The shipping box showed signs of being crushed. That translated to some damage to the veneer. I should have returned it but I was on a bit of a time line and I had my doubts that a replacement would fare any better. I was able to work around some but not all of the damaged spots. Aside from that I am happy with how it turned out.

Looks nice but make sure the adhesive stays with the veneer

I'm new at veneering. So, I started with a test piece. It was a good thing, the adhesive partially came off the veneer when removing the peel-off backing. I didn't notice until after I placed it on the test piece. The result wasn't ideal. It would have been a disaster had it been on the project purchased this for. In the future, I will watch for that. Other than that, the veneer is quite nice and appears fairly easy to work with.

Easy to use. Make sure your surface is flat, though, as the veneer is not very pliable.

Worked Great! I used yellow glue and an iron to install. The paper back makes cutting east. Highly recommend it.
