Reviews
This charcoal burns with a slight chemical odor that gets into food. It produces more smoke than other lump charcoal brands. There are tons of snap crackle pops flames when cranking the heat. The only redeeming quality of this charcoal are the rather large pieces.
Excellent choice for ceramic grills.
We tried many brands of lump hardwood for our egg grill. We returned the remaining bags of two other brands recently because they imparted the strong flavor and scent of lighter fluid, and would not burn hot enough. This brand is our new favorite. The price is right for the size bag. We don't need to try any others.
Clean Burn 🔥
This charcoal is amazing. I bought 2 bags of each flavor. It has a great flavor, and you don't have to use much because it burns a lot longer and hotter. You also don't have to use that much lighter fuel, which tends to be smelly and can leave your food with a horrible taste if you don't let it burn off.
No Lumps Here
Lump charcoal is the best thing going. They burn really hot, which prevents you from having to restart your fire over and over while grilling. There's very little burn-off and no need to use an excessive amount of chemicals like lighter fluid. Additionally, because lump charcoal is flavored, the taste it adds to your food is unimaginable.
Great Charcoal!
I've been buying B %26 B charcoal for the past few years now because it's a great quality charcoal that lasts longer than most other brands. It also produces a less and cleaner smoke than the competition, which adds a nice flavor to the meat.
Received charcoal and briquettes all broken up
Walmart shipped two bags in each shipping box making the boxes very heavy. The shipping boxes were all broken and ripped apart when delivered from being handled and so heavy causing the charcoal to be all broken up in smaller pieces. Two of the bags of Briquettes had tears in them and there is an abundance of charcoal crumbs and dust from all of the breakage.
Hot stuff
There’s only two things that I can say about this, one is that the price is very reasonable and that the quality of the lump is good. Sometimes all you get is small bits and pieces, not so with B%26B and it doesn’t break your pocket. I’ve switched from the big K to B %26 B for all my grilling needs. From my Weber’s to my Kamado all I’m using is B %26 B.
actual lump charcoal
i have tried many lump charccoal brands. most are a fee lumps and the rest is basically rice coal, that dont burn hot and pieces that are useless. Rhis one, actual beautiful large nice pieces. burn terrific, hot and last. best ones i have come across since my time in Bolivia with real charcoal.
I don’t like paying more than $1.00 per pound of lump coal. For any of the premium lump coal, it’s almost impossible to get that price. When I saw this at Walmart at their price point, I had to try it. I’ve only done one cook with this new coal, but I am VERY happy with it. The size of the coal is amazing, burns very well, and added excellent flavor. I’ll be buying LOTS more of this until they figure out the price point is waaaaaay too low!
Best charcoal around
Charcoal is one of the most widely known and widely used fuel sources in both smokers and grills, even by champion barbecue PitMaster. It is made by partially burning hardwood until it carbonizes. The most common form of charcoal is lump. These are all consistent in size and shape and are engineered to provide a consistent and convenient fuel source.
Torn bags, poor handling
B%26B charcoal is great, and I have purchased it from Ace Hardware in the past. But one the two bags was taped back shut after being opened and was missing charcoal, as it did not measure up to the 20 lbs when weighed on a scale. Buyer beware if purchasing online from Walmart. Never had this issue when buying from Ace Hardware, but always bought the bags in person.
Perfect flavor and smoke easily
1st I dislike that there are quite some chunky pieces of charcoal. Trust me when chunky. So you might want to break it if you use a small grill or a chimney starter. Other than that, it is perfect. Smokey Flavor is there, it burns evenly and you can even reuse it
My favorite lump charcoal!
B %26 B lump charcoal has been my favorite for long low and slow smokes. Be aware of reviews that say the pieces are too small. If lump charcoal isn’t handled properly being that it is very brittle you will have a bag of crumbs. When your package arrives gently feel through the paper bag and if you feel that it is mostly a little pieces, I suggest returning it not because the product Isn’t good but that it was poorly handled in shipping. I received mine in very good condition. Hopefully yours will be as well.
B&B OAK LUMP CHARCOAL
When I opened the bag of this charcoal, the pieces were large and knew they would be great in my drum smoker. As I went down further, the pieces became smaller and smaller, to the point that they slipped through the grate of my smoker. The larger pieces burn well and evenly. The smaller pieces are too small and unusable. I would estimate that the contains about 1/3 pieces so small that they are unusable like "gravel."
Burns good - but starting to have some serious concerns
I've used this same brand for years, which does speak to it's quality. It burns consistent, it burns clean, and completely. However, in the last 12 months, I keep finding chunks of rock and concrete in the ash pan of my smoker. And oddly it's getting worse as time progresses. 2-3 golf ball sized chunks per bag has turned into 5-6 per cook (which means 15-18 per bag).
B&B Lump Oak - Simply Unmatched
We had the pleasure of serving as brand ambassadors for B&B Charcoal Products almost 4 years now. For us, it was a natural choice after the first time we ran it. In my experience with B&B Lump Oak and those variations that are offered by others, B&B Lump Oak burns cleaner, hotter and longer than the competition. Hands down a leading contributor to our success in the competition scene as well as a champion to my friends and family when cooking in the backyard.
This stuff is the bomb
This brand was recommended by veteran grillers has having more large lumps of charcoal, fewer small pieces, less dust, and for holding temperature well for long cooks while producing less ash. I can't speak to dust - just started using it - but it did have some good-sized chunks. I slow-cooked some spare ribs this weekend in a Kamado-style grill, using a steel insert known as the Slow 'N Sear that rests just under the main grate. I started it slow, then filled the SnS - it's 8.5" deep. I cooked at an average of 230º for 6 hours, and could have kept going; about a quarter of the total lump didn't even burn. And way fewer ashes than a similar cook would have produced with briquettes. For long cooks, I'm a believer. B
Medium Large Lump. Burns Hot! Burns Long!
This is only the second brand of charcoal that I've tried in my Kamado Joe Junior. I use it in a Kick Ash basket. The previous brand that I used did not seem to get too hot. While heat cleaning the kamado tonight, the temp got up to 720 degrees Fahrenheit. Because many of the pieces are medium large, you have to arrange them by hand in the small KJ Junior to make them fit. The nice air gaps between the pieces allow for excellent air flow allowing for high temperatures when needed. Although I am only half way through my first bag, there does not seem to be a lot of dust in the bag. This lump burns hot and lasts a long time. I am extremely pleased with this lump charcoal.
Not as advertised.
This isn't a review of the charcoal's cooking performance or flavor. They product Ace sold me isn't the product pictured. Bought this via this website. Picked it up at my local store. The bag pictured is "Oak Lump Charcoal." The bag waiting for me at the store is "Lump Charcoal With Oak" -- it's a blend of hardwoods, including oak but also other hardwoods. Not the same thing at all. Checked with the store clerk; she said it was the same SKU as this. The price is good, less than $1/pound, but didn't end up with the product I wanted. (Note: I checked the B&B website, and this blend isn't even pictured, so I can't tell whether they have stopped offering the all-oak and replaced it with this.)
