The coffee table is not nearly as nice as described and is overpriced for what you receive. The "slate" or "shale" appears to be cast and definitely has a painted black finish. There is no natural variation in color. The base is well made and nicely finished though. Shipping took way longer than listed and Overstock was not helpful at all in finding out where the product was or when it would arrive.
