Are you looking for a book that will help instill in your elementary-age child a love for the peoples of the world and a heart to pray for them? Wycliffe Bible Translators has provided just such a book in their prayer primer From Akebu to Zapotec: A Book of Bibleless Peoples I call this a primer because each of the 26 letters A-Z represents a people group somewhere in the world that does not yet have a translation of the Bible in their own language (or did not yet when the book was first published several years ago) I call it a prayer primer because when read and looked at thoughtfully this book can inspire and inform family prayer It can also provide learning opportunities in geography and instill a deeper understanding of the rich diversity of cultures in our world One of the book s best features is its opening page which presents The people from A-Z The alphabetical list names each people group and country from which they come and is accompanied by a map marked with the representative letters My seven year old loved our weekly hunt for a new people group Instead of going straight to the page that talked about the group we went first to the map She would find that week s letter and I would ask her to name the continent where it was located Then we d look below to discover the country and then find the country on our globe Each page describing the people group is beautifully designed The book a thin paperback opens long-wise so the pages are in a landscape format Fully two-thirds of each page is taken up by a brightly colored illustration of several people from that group Families communities and children are highlighted and often people are shown involved in their particular every-day activities For instance the Brokpa people of Bhutan are shown riding yaks while the Melanau people of Malaysia are shown catching fish A detailed border design sometimes picking up motifs from the illustration or from details in the accompanying text frames each picture The text is presented in two-three simple paragraphs in a column next to the illustration It s centered beneath a large and brightly colored letter and there s a helpful pronunciation guide to the name of each group Intermediate readers (roughly grades 3-5) should have no problem reading the text though it also works very well when read aloud especially since the text tries to paint vivid word and sound pictures related to the life of the people group Emphasis on details regarding houses clothes livelihood chores games and other activities help children to realize how much people all around the world have in common even as they marvel at the diversity of customs Each page ends the same way with the phrase The ____ people do not have the Bible in their own language This provides a familiar litany and invites prayer and discussion In addition to publishing this book Wycliffe has other prayer and missions resources for children available on their website I m not sure if they provide updates regarding Bible translation progress for these specific people groups but families may be inspired to research and learn more and Wycliffe would be a good place to start
