I love the quality and price. I also like that I can stain it to the color that I want. I've purchased several International Concepts items and have always been very pleased at the quality. The sections are butcher block and not one individual piece. But that makes it an affordable solid wood option. I couldn't get other options for the price that this one is. The wood also takes a stain very well. I stain mine a darker color. I don't hardly notice the butcher block in the pieces. I'm going to be getting more of these as I can. Also the packaging is great. I've gotten some where the outer box looks terrible but the pieces inside are still perfect and undamaged.

Nice solid heavy bookcase. Easy assembly. Looks great for my granddaughters books.

Doesn’t Assemble Properly

Spent multiple days painting this unfinished bookcase only for it to be impossible to assemble because of how badly it was constructed. The wooden pegs on the bottom piece did not line up with the sides at all and had to force them together just for the back panel to be unable to slide in because the wood was not cut down enough to allow space for it. So much time, energy, and supplies wasted because of the bad craftsmanship of this product. I am extremely disappointed.

Disappointed by Espresso color

I bought the espresso color to match my existing furniture, which is a medium dark walnut brown. Based on most of the review photos, I thought it would be a good match. I knew it might be a bit of a darker brown, based on other reviews, and I was okay with that. However, there are reddish undertones to the brown, which I don't like. I haven't yet assembled the bookcase, and I am mulling the idea of returning it.

This bookshelf is of high quality dense, heavy, wood. It is perfect for what we need and where we need to put it. The only problem we had was there was no instructions for putting it together. We tried to find instructions online with no results, we tried calling the manufacturer, but was left with only an option to leave a message. Finally, we were able to direct message someone working for Home Depot. They were unable to find instructions online or otherwise. I finally put it together working with only the picture and had extra hardware left over.

Solid and looks good; but frustrating

Primary elements of the bookcase are solid and go together with relative ease. The sliding of the backing into the bookcase is clever and effective. The few premarked holes, however, do not line up with the middle shelf and the prepared holes in the two back support bars would split the wood on the bookcase if used. In the end, I just abandoned the two back bars. The really problem with the bookcase is that it needs to be four inches higher if you want four shelves for hardbacks. Based on the location of the fixed middle shelf, you have to set your adjustable shelves at the highest of the three prepared holes for the supports of those shelves. This allows you to use the second and fourth shelves for hardbacks. The third shelf, however, creates an area too small for standard hardbacks and many paperbacks. The first shelf can accommodate hardback books — sort of. The ornamental overhang from the top makes the height too small and the only way to get a hardback onto the shelf is sliding it in at an angle. This means that you cannot use the full length for hardbacks, as you will need to pull out some books in order to get out any hardbacks on the first shelf.

Not really made with books in mind.

This is a good shelf that would work for most people, but I intended to fill it with books. The shelf heights are a little awkward. I wanted to put taller books (about 11-12" on the bottom shelf and paperbacks on the upper two shelves. There's really not room. The few inches under the shelf shouldn't be wasted. Anyway I am stuck with this shelf deciding which books to put on it as it doesn't fulfill my original intended purpose. Actually make a shelf with book dimensions in mind.

Great piece of assemble it yourself furniture. Very solid construction and I actually like that it's unfinished so I can make it the color I want. Assembly was very straightforward, but hey, it's a bookcase!

Bought the 60 in. writing desk 1 year ago and...

Bought the 60 in. writing desk 1 year ago and it turned out excellent. This 36 in. bookcase on the other hand, not so good. The main problem was glue smear on exposed surfaces. Didn't notice the problem until staining. Was able to go back and restain with some careful work so it's not very noticeable and is acceptable to me. This problem may really upset some people off so carefully inspect all visible surfaces before proceeding.

Really nice solid wood because. Was relatively easy to put together. I haven't painted or stained it yet, but seems to be very nice. I really like that it has 2 pieces of wood on the back panel to hold that back piece in better. My only problem was getting the back piece to sit in its groove like it should but not a big deal.

Simple classic bookcase that should last years

Nice quality solid wood bookcase that was relatively easy to assemble by myself. I'd recommend they put small pilot holes on the back panels where it is to be screwed to the shelf as it's very easy to miss the mark by just a touch and split the shelf by mistake. I ordered 3 of these. One had a missing part and, while the issue has been rectified, it was more time consuming than I would have hoped or expected to get the matter resolved - requiring several emails and phone calls and much patient waiting.

Simple design and real wood bookcase looks great!

Very solid and nice looking all wood bookcase! I bought the unfinished version, and applied a whitewash stain to the pieces before I assembled it. It has become a nice addition to my living room, and I’ve already received several compliments on its appearance.

Nice solid little bookcase, relatively easy to assemble, took stain well. Arrived quickly and in good shape. This replaced a cheap particle-board bookcase that had fallen apart. Very satisfied with purchase.

Sturdy, attractive and easy to assemble

I found these bookcases to be wonderfully sturdy with the real wood construction. Each shelf can hold a substantial load. My need was somewhere to store my library of piano music. The strong wood shelves and adjustability makes storing regular sized as well as over-sized editions easy.

I think this is a great bookcase. Very sturdy & nice to look at. My son put it together quickly with the tool that came with it although I told him multiple reviews said it was easier with a different one. He had no problems, however. Since my son put it together I didn't get to finish it but it still looks good & I am very happy with my choice. I would definitely buy again.
