Reviews
The bookshelves were great in every way except for the fact they stunk while off-gassing folmeldyhide. My husband became ill after assembing them and we had to move them to the far side of the house and open all the windows until the could be removed from the house entirely. Contamination caused shortness of breath, coughing, nasal and throat irritation, headache, watering eyes. Unacceptable. We were unable to use area of the house until the shelves were gone.
This bookshelf is absolutely gorgeous. Even lighter than I expected, the wood for the sides and the shelves is very solid. The back of the boards is thin and an entirely different color than the real wood, but I'm not mad at that for the price. The wood also smells pretty strong for over a week, but it's not a bad smell. The package was beat up, but they packed the product really well. The bookshelf did come with only a small flaw of a damaged back panel, and Home Depot customer service sent a message to the sellers on my behalf, who had a replacement panel sent out to me by the next day. Extremely good customer service.
Not high quality but it will fill my space
Package arrived with all three back panels broken. Had to buy a replacement piece for it. Not worth the hassle of returning and risking another broken item. If care was used rather than just tossing panels on top in the box; they wouldn’t have been broke. Entire bookcase is made from strips of wood formed to make the piece. Due to variations in the tones either paint or go with very dark stain.
Solid wood, good value.
Solid wood construction and seems it will be sturdy enough for what I need. Directions could have been a little better and there were not any stickers to indicate which piece was which instructions indicate piece A, B, C, etc but pieces were not physically labelled). Some pieces are very similar in shape/size so there was some extra scrutiny to make sure we were assembling correctly.
The detailed instructions made it very easy to put together. The solid wood is beautiful and smooth, ready for a finish. You can’t beat the price for the quality and style as I’ve priced around nothing came close. The doors can be switched as shaker or traditional display. It looks like a built in next to my fireplace. Perfect for displaying your Knick Knacks and storage space in the cabinet Fast and free delivery from Home Depot was great!
Nice bookcase, poor assembly instructions.
Overall, happy with the bookcases themselves. Seems well built. However, the instructions fall short, in fact, boxes with the doors have important but different assembly information. Also, having pre-drilled holes for mounting door hinges and magnet door stops would certainly be helpful.
Sturdy, simple, easy to put together.
This book case is well made--I painted one and minwax color stained the other two for different rooms. They required minimal sanding. I agree with some of the comments made that the back board is very thin and would not stand up to much. On the other hand, it doesn't need to. The instructions require some common sense interpretation, but I was able to put most of it together by myself as a relatively small older woman. You need a Phillips head screw driver and some experience driving a screw into wood without a hole pre-drilled, but it's doable. I think I could have stood it up and moved it into place (slowly) by myself, but it was easier with two people. I was impressed with how stable it was even before installing the wall anchors. While the plastic ties for the wall anchors seems a little odd at first, in my old house it means that the shelf could be exactly where I wanted it, and I could still reach the studs in the wall to anchor the shelf. They look great with a mix of books and other items. I did make sure that the bottom shelf was full of heavier books.
Nice looking, sturdy and functional
This book case is exactly like it is pictured on the web. The quality is good, all parts fit very well, and the end product is sturdy and functional. I like that it has fixed (better for heavier books) and adjustable shelves (allows for larger formats). Installation of the shelf itself is very manageable. However, it is not at all easy to install the lower doors. Precision is a must but there are no guidelines to drill holes for the hinges. I strongly recommend the manufacturer includes a template - just a strip of paper with markings on it. We tried to make our own, but it took several attempts. Time consuming and frustrating and frankly could have been better.

Very well constructed; instructions are simple - do recommend labeling each element with a Letter or Number (especially back panels) to ensure proper order and orientation. All tools and hardware are provided for assembly -brilliant and much appreciated!
Not entirely wood
The sides and shelves are all real wood. However the back is made of very thin plywood/pressed wood. I purchased the 72 inch tall bookcase. If you are looking for a stable bookcase, do not purchase this. It wobbles forward even when filled with books. It will need attached to a wall for stability. When assembled and painted, the bookcase looks excellent from the front - very nice and expensive looking. (It's too bad it's not a higher quality). There was a defect on the bookcase I received. There was a metal piece that was put in the wrong hole where the pegs for the shelves are supposed to be inserted. I didn't notice it until pushing the shelf into place which caused a hole through the other side of the wood.
Not worth the effort
The description in this item touts the solid wood, which drew me to it in the first place, but note there is still a plywood back that contains formaldehyde. If you search this page for "formaldehyde" the term does not appear, but you can find it once you reveal "Show More". I did not catch it until I saw the warning on one of the panels of the second bookcase I assembled.

This bookcase is very well made. I ordered the 36-inch and 72 inch. All the parts were there and it went together very easily. This is the only bookcases that I could find that were actually wood not that cheap particle board. I ordered them unfinished because I want to paint them antique white to match my TV console. I wouldn't hesitate to buy these books cases because they're actually very well made and look beautiful. Photo shows them unfinished. My husband put them together so I think it's best that if you're a woman who isn't strong enough to use the Allen wrench to tighten the screws you should find someone to put them together for you. They were well packed and protected from damage but the boxes were a little opened when they were delivered. The shipper should secure the the boxes better with more tape. UPS man had a difficult time with delivering the 72 inch because it's a two-man job. The 72 inch should be delivered by Home Depot by 2 men. Do not put these bookcases together in your home. I would advise to put them together in a garage with the door open or outside because they contain formaldehyde which is a wood preservative. They need to be put together in a ventilated area. When you finish them or paint them it will seal them and then you don't have to worry about the formaldehyde.
Solid, attractive bookshelves
I bought 2 of these, unfinished, and painted them before assembly. Assembly was relatively easy, the second one went faster than the first. Do be sure to get the back pieces in in the correct order, they are not all the same size, and need to line up with the shelves for screwing in. The design is simple and classic, the wood is solid and the construction is solid when assembled. I didn't fix to the wall, it seems quite stable without that. The boxes arrived a bit beaten up, but no damage to the product itself. One of them came with no hardware and no back pieces, but a phone call to Home Depot got the replacement parts sent out quite quickly. I'm a single woman in her mid 60s, but I managed to assemble and raise them up by myself. I'm very pleased with how they look and would order again in a heartbeat.

I purchased three of these at separate times within the last year. The first two were perfect. Took the stain beautifully and assembly wasn't difficult once we figured out what we were doing.
Nice quality bookcase ruined by formaldehyde plywood back!!!
The unit is very well made, but I can’t use it because the back is made of thin plywood that reeks of formaldehyde. I was concerned by the Prop-65 warning, but In one of the other questions or reviews on here, the manufacturer suggested that the plywood would have likely off-gassed by the time you get the item. Well that was not the case for me. It has such an awful, strong smell Of formaldehyde that I cannot have it in my house. We’ve been putting it outside on clear days for weeks now, and the odor hasn’t lessened. On rainy days, my garage reeks of the odor. I’m so disappointed. I’m going to look into whether I can return it, but we already assembled it and disposed of the packaging. (Which is another issue—if you are concerned about recycling, beware that you will end up with about 3 grocery bags packed full of foam packing materials.)

Overall quality is good. I ended up buying 4 of these in total. One of them was missing the hardware bag, but I contacted Home Depot and they contacted the manufacturer on my behalf and they mailed me the parts the very next day.

I was worried when I saw the condition of the shipping box ripped in a number of places, but it was well packed, no damage. The shelf assembled easily and all the parts fit together well, very sturdy/solid. I was staining it with a minwax espresso stain, which I have used on many other woods to achieve my very dark brown color. This wood did not accept the stain as well, looked lighter with golden highlights, so I had to put a second coat on with a mixture of espresso and ebony to achieve the normal dark espresso color. Bear that in mind when staining. Also, the wood is not as porous, so it doesn't soak up the stain and dry as quickly, it took 3 days with a periodic small heater in front of it and the ceiling fan on (Montana, mild winter outside, 80° inside). I love my new bookcase and ordered another.
