Outsunny 10'x8' Retractable Sun Shade Patio/Window

Bought this to use on our back patio this summer but it was never installed. The directions were extremely difficult. We ended up taking it apart and putting it back in the box. Instead, we installed a permanent roof. I would only recommend this purchase if you have a lot of patience to put it together. It takes at least 2 people.

It is cooler in the shad.

Who knew! I had recently bought patio umbrellas of the same exact pattern. Product looks and feels sturdy, solid and is well worth the money. Advised constantly of delivery issues good and not so good, and still kept me on track of completing my project. Thank you for the products you provide, quality and customer service. I shall be back!

Terrible quality

The worst product I have ever bought!

This awning needs some serious directions upgrade (you can't make sense of them). The parts are all different sizes, it's difficult to install, it's a nightmare. Ours is coming out of the wall (on it's own) and now we'll have to hire a second person to come out to fix it. The hand crank takes a while but it gets the job done.

Although this awning presented as quite acceptable, the instructions and presentation were inadequate and took an extraordinary length of time to fully complete.

I am an experienced do-it- yourself homeowner. This unit was a little hard to assemble as the directions were not very clear and the pictures and diagrams were too small to be useful. Also, the on-line instructions and the ones included differed in some respects. The main reason I gave it only a one-star is that I think it is quite dangerous. I did not cut the retainers until I had it mounted on the back beam of my deck and had carefully checked the assembly. The unit literally exploded when I cut the final strap and the gear head came off allowing the roller and awning fabric to end up in my backyard. In my opinion, the gear head should bolt to the crossbar and not rely on only tension as is the current configuration. I was able to make the unit work for me only after removing the outer arms and only extending the awning about 3 feet. Be extremely careful if you choose to purchase this unit!

Great awning, great deal!

We love this awning! With 30 years of IKEA experience, it only took a couple hours to assemble, and although the English of the instructions is a little funky ("The arms need up.") We only had to backtrack once to fix a part we had put on backwards. The hardest part was finding the studs to attach it to, and after that installation was a breeze. Now our deck is much more inviting on a hot sunny day, and no bother moving a heavy umbrella stand around. Yeah, for $1000 more, we could have gotten something more robust, but I think as long as we roll it in for wind and rain, it will be fine. Love it!

Good product, but critical flaw in instructions

It is a decent manual awning for the price. I have put up both powered and manual retract awnings, and the manual retract version is much easier (and lighter). An average strength middle aged husband and a noodle armed wife were enough to hoist the awning into position. The directions are fairly straight forward. The one critical mistake in the instructions is the spacing of the wall mount brackets. The instructions state 140mm spacing between the outermost brackets. I ended up spacing the outer most brackets an additional 36" (a total span of 93" center to center of outer most wall mount brackets). If you space these brackets per the instructions, 140mm, the torsion bar will twist and flex excessively, causing the awning to bouncing up at down at the slightest wind and cause extreme twist/bend in the torsion bar. The roller can (and in our case did) pop out of the alignment guide because of this excessive movement. With the wider spacing, the torsion bar rotation and bending is minimal and the system is nice and sturdy. I uploaded a photo (sorry, the 140cm should say 140mm in the photo) to show the holes from the instruction spacing and the spacing we used. Another tip, we wanted as horizontal as possible (5 degrees). One side sat lower than the other, so we had to lower the high side to compensate. This is easy enough to do (a couple adjustment bolts), but if you don't adjust, the extended awning may not hang parallel to the ground and might look like a few too many beers were consumed during the hanging of said awning.

Arms not strong enough & faulty installation info

The reason the price is so good is that the instructions and frankly the product are not good. We had amazing installers, confident, but toward the end there was no way it could have been installed by the directions. It also is built so poorly that the arms can’t hold the weight. The slightest wind and we rush outside to roll it up. It’s all we could afford. I guess it’s better than the worn out beach umbrella we were using prior - hope it lasts longer than it looks like it will. It now sags on one side.

Walk away, these are terrible. It took my son and I over six hours to figure out how this goes together on the basis of instructions written in China by someone with very poor English skills. It took us another couple hours to get it well attached to our house. It’s really heavy, and so it needs house-structural support such as beams or masonry wall, and this is not easy to drill into — and if you want to extend it to the full 13 ft, you’ll need to mount it high enough to accommodate the angle which is a minimum of 5 degrees on paper but is really more like a minimum of 15 degree slant. We couldn’t mount it higher than about 7 feet, which makes the canopy 5 feet high at lowest point of extension. Not good. We made a huge mistake buying this, but you won’t realize that until it is too late to return it. We hope this review might make you think twice. It’s a very expensive umbrella that attaches to your wall. Be sure you want to give two days to it.

I am very impressed with this awning. The instructions are a bit interesting to figure out in parts but overall the installation process wasnt horrible. My husband and I have been thru far more challenging projects and survived. Lol.

AWESOME PRODUCTS

THESE ARE AWESOME, I HAVE IT...IT'S WONDERFUL, LIKE THE OTHER 6 FOOT RED AND WHITE STRIPED AND THE FOUR 4 FOOT ONES I ORDERED. I HAVEN'T GOT IT UP YET. BUT I'M SURE IT WILL GO UP WITH EASE AS WITH THE OTHERS. IN A FEW HOURS THEY GO UP EASILY...THEY ALREADY MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN SHADING THE HOUSE FOR COOLING. AND THEY ADD A WONDERFUL TOUCH TO CAMP SUNSHINE...THE NEIGHBORHOOD LOVES THEM...PUSHING SALES...AND I ENJOY THEM SO MUCH. THE SUN SHADE IS FOR A BACK DECK, FULL GLASS AND THE SUN GETS SO HOT BACK THERE, SO AS SOON AS THE WEATHER IS RIGHT...THIS ALSO WILL BE ADDED. THANK YOU OVERSTOCK. GREATEST PRICE AND QUALITY I FOUND. LOOKED EVERYWHERE.

Very nice awning, just be sure to ignore the instructions!

After several years of trying to find a replacement in this size I finally lucked out and this size was in stock.Today was a decent New England day and warmer weather's on the way so it was time for assembly. My first impression as a former design technician was that there was some decent thought put into the design of this awning; fit and function are pretty well thought out, with a few opportunities for minor improvement, but nothing prohibitive. For anyone interested in doing this alone as I did, here's how it went:First, do NOT attempt this if you don't have a 15' long area which you can set up to support working on the assembly at a comfortable height. My workshop being 12' by 16' was just workable having the adjacent driveway available as well. More on that later. What you start with is several "halves" that lock together to create the full length frame. Most of this work is straightforward despite the horrid text translations. Any handyman worth their salt will have few issues here.Do yourself a HUGE favor: Once you have assembled the main frame which will be seated against your building, mount the brackets to the building NOW, making sure they are leveled and all 3 are in a straight line. Once fully assembled this thing will weigh a ton and be a beast to control, you'll be very thankful the brackets are where they need to be so you can just hoist this puppy up and into place. The rest of the assembly is pretty much "by the book", with the exception of where they tell you to set one bar "6 cm from the end of the adjacent bar"- this is BULL! DO NOT tighten the "foot brackets" until later when the rolled up fabric is installed. Center the entire roller and then tighten the brackets. Huge mistake on their part. The other main concern is sliding the fabric into the slots that hold it; use caution and be very patient here or you can tear the stitching either at the point of entry or the midpoint where the two halves join. This is also where that extra space in the driveway comes in handy- you'll have 13 feet of frame sitting there and another 13 feet of spline-line fabric you need to feed into a slot without snagging it and causing a tear! I set the roller on a ladder for support and moved both the ladder and roller closer as I worked. (this will make sense when you go to do it)A trustworthy assistant would be invaluable here to prevent an accidental snag, as feeding the fabric into the frame is a bit tedious. I managed alone, but had to be very careful especially at the points there is stitching being fed into the slots.Once fully assembled this thing is big, bulky, and heavy. As one who used to toss my 130 lb Coleman Scanoe over my head and jaunt around the yard like it was a paper bag, trust me- this thing is HUGE and hard to aim into those little tiny brackets that are up over your head and impossible to spot as you shove this monstrosity up there and nearly into place. Get two strong ladders (it's you And the canopy!) and get help. I used to put mine up and take it down myself back when I was young and healthy, and it was a chore back then. Now I'm smart enough to realize one small slip and this thing gets destroyed in an instant! Get help. You'll be glad you did. It only takes a minute to hang, but it feels like an hour!!
