Nalgene Straight Side Jars - 8 oz. (227 g)
These jars work great
5 stars for all sizes. They do not leak, they are tough and they are multipurpose.
The Perfect Bowl
We use the large version as our camp bowls. The lids allows us to cook porridge, minute rice and other simple fare efficiently with just the addition of boiling water. They are big enough to use as mixing bowls for powdered milk etc, and they are great containers to pick wild berries into without fear of squishing or having berry juice leak throughout your bags. After 25 days use, fluid leakage was not an issue, nor was flavor contamination. When not carrying food they can be stuffed with small kitchen items to save space.
Liquids leak
We have used Nalgene containers for years. They do the job for liquids (our primary use) and dry goods and they last and last. We bought some new ones as we needed some different sizes and the materials have changed from our older ones. We used the news ones on a recent cycle touring trip and discovered they are no longer reliable for storing liquids, no matter how tight you screw the lids on. The extra price was easily justified in the past but no longer. Don't buy these if you want to use them for liquids and you can't guarantee they'll stay upright. These are too bulky and heavy for dry goods only unless you are car camping.
Great for backcountry pantry
Versatile, sturdy, waterproof jars. And very inexpensive (definitely not cheap). Easy to open, and to seal shut - makes it great for storing backcountry pantry items:
Great for Trips AND Kid's Lunches
I was first introduced to these jars while canoe tripping in Temagami in 1987 and we've been using them ever since as a rock-solid-reliable means of organizing our staples on extended outings.
Good for all kinds of uses
I originally got this to carry a bit of butter when backpacking. Works perfectly fine for that - no plastic taste, no lid coming off, so I trust this thing to be upside-down in my pack. Might get some more containers to use for small amount of lotion, etc.
Hey what's in there?
These are great containers for everyday use or hitting the back country.
Fabulous!
I LOOOOOVE these jars. I bring a lunch to work every day, and they are great for so many things. I put liquids in them (soup, yogurt), and they are absolutely leak proof. The size variety is perfect. I have to hide them so my housemates don't steel them!!
So much organization for so little cash
I picked up a few of these from a small independent outdoor store (Sorry MEC) and absolutely love them. Being an urban dweller I've found these are absolutely great in the kitchen. The seal is so good when they're on tight (beware: the threads are deeper than your standard mayonaise jar, so give em' the extra twist) that they are as close to airtight as you can get in an inexpensive reusable container. I find them much better at storing food than my grocery store purchased containers.
Great jar!
The description says not ideal for liquids, but in my experience it works great! I use these containers to take my meals to work in. Soup, lasagna, etc... never spilled a drop! The seal on the lid is so good that if you don't loosen the lid enough when you heat your food in the microwave, you will develop such a strong vacuum seal that it is literally impossible to open.
Excellent value and quaility....
Just a little too big, I was looking for something a little smaller, about half this size. Last trip I was on I could have saved myself some weight and bulkiness but I couldn't find a good container to transfer suntan lotion from a larger bottle. Seems they only sell massive bottles of sun tan lotion and no one seems to have just the right size plastic container that won't loose it's lid and spill it's guts all over the inside of your pack. I think 75 ml would be about right, same style and shape of container.
