Mostly particle board and VERY heavy making assembly a challenge. Has a very large required sticker on the outside left side warning that bookcases fall over. Wording, size, and position assumes the owner has the IQ of a small soap dish.

Solid, durable, and good looking at a great price!

Solid construction. Easy to put together. Material is simulated wood grain pattern melamine on engineered fiber board (mdf). Very durable, easy to clean; doesn't scratch easily if you use it for displaying things other than books that might scratch finished wood. Also stands up to liquid drips from coffee cups, etc with no worries about ring stains. Shelves and top are 1 inch thick, sides and back are 3/4 inch thick. I like the fact that the back is solid. A lot of bookcases only have a 1/16 or 1/8 inch cardboard panel that is tacked on and gets knocked loose the first time somebody pushes a book into it too hard.

These are beautiful bookcases. All of the pieces are heavy duty holding even encyclopedia sets without sagging. I bought 4 of Alera's Valencia bookcases so far and love them. Unlike other bookcases, the backs are NOT cardboard but heavy duty particle board that piece together. Assembly is also easy. Just follow the instructions.
