Love it
I spent a year looking at budget options for shade in the backyard before finally deciding to splurge on the Norwood 10x12. Glad I did. Assembly was pretty straightforward, there were a couple spots where the boards were warped or the holes were a bit out of tolerance and I had to drill them a bit larger to make things line up, but that's to be expected with wood. I did most of it myself, and then recruited a few friends to help me stand it up and complete the final steps. Would recommend at least 3 helpers for standing it up and getting the roof panels on. Could be done with fewer, but more makes it much easier. Finished it with Australian Timber Oil. Looks great, nice and sturdy. The building inspector referred to it as "handsome."
Finished product so worth it!
Bought this kit to replace an old metal frame rusted out pergola, was love at first sight when I saw timber frame inspired pictures. Build it slowly with help from my two sons, so proud to say I build the roof grid all by myself, a 66 year old lady. I also stained it with Cabot's Heartwood sealer which is the most beautiful color. We were so worried about getting the roof up there in the limited space but it just went up perfectly on the first attempts. Then I took it the rest of the way to perfect- added rain gutters, sun curtains, ceiling fan, Alexa and over 500 fairy lights and Edison bulbs. Could not be happier with the finished product, it was been a really great summer project. Thank you, Backyard Discovery!
Everything great, except the roof
I was really impressed with how this went together. Everything lined up well enough, and was easy enough to put together. My only complaint is the roof. The roof isn’t designed for places that have heavy rain the metal roofing doesn’t extend long enough to shed water properly. Both ends also don’t have any roofing material over them, so they are completely exposed to the weather. The design for this roof is a poor choice. The edges are high, with no roofing material, then it drops lower to where the roofing material is, which causes the roofing material to not protect the wood. They should have just designed the roof as a regular roof.
well-designed, strong all cedar construction!
Bought 3 weeks ago to add permanent durable shelter over existing spa. Very easy or order. Good price (eligible for military discount…Thank you!)
Best addition ever
We bought this after Memorial Day. Now it is not a simple task to put together. You have to pay attention to the details I think one of the boards was warped so we had to drill a couple more holes. And we messed up on the main supports. Got the orientation switched and had to drill extra holes. Totally our fault. Pay attention to the details. But overall we are so happy with this gazebo. We have it up in a west facing lower walkout that we never used. Too hot. A couple of Lowe’s fans. Amazon lights. Using it all season. Had 2 big parties. Baby and wedding shower and it was a big plus to have this outdoor space. Highly recommend this item. It took us about 20 hours to put this up. 10 with 2 people and 10 with a couple extra friends. my husband and I the first frame parts together. Highly recommend this item. No split wood heavy parts. Good hardware. Been through a couple good storms. No leaks. You won’t be sorry.
Exactly what we expected!
Based on the reviews I read before purchasing I expected to be very pleased with the product and overall experience - including the assembly process. I can say that this expectation was met! The product was packaged well and arrived completely undamaged. The assembly instructions were straightforward and easy to follow. That said - preparing and assembling this item is a BIG job... We decided to stain all of our wood pieces before assembling, which in hindsight I'm very glad we went this route. I did most of the work on my own, but there are several steps where several people are definitely needed. Getting the roof panels on, squared and attached was a bit of a challenge, but we got it all in place after some trial and error. The entire process took several weekends to complete. It's been up for couple of weeks now and has already been through several rain storms and a couple of thunderstorms. Happy to say it's held up w/o any issues!
Customer Service Is Amazing
I am very impressed with the product and absolutely blow away by the customer service. The quality of the parts is excellent. The instructions are very well done. There are a lot of parts so its important to stay organized. The various tools and bits are included with the kit. A power drill or impact is highly recommended. If you don't already own one you're probably not the type of person that should take on this project. I called a couple of times with questions and the customer service reps were knowledgeable and helpful. They're even staffed on Sundays! Since I just finished assembly I can't comment on longevity but I see no reason to be concerned. There were some very high winds the other night and the unit stood solid. I expected some creaking or vibration of the roof panels but the was none.
My Norwood Experience
Ordered product on a Saturday in late March and it was delivered the following Friday, 6 days later. A little overwhelming when I saw all the parts. There was no damage to anything during shipping, and every piece of wood and all fasteners were clearly labeled. I built the entire thing myself with the exception of standing the two sections up and fastening them together. I also had some help with the installation of the roof panels. These two steps I do not believe it's possible to do alone. I did not download the builder app. I used only the instructions provided. I had a few do-overs early on, but the farther along I got it seemed to get easier. Wood and hardware seem to be very good quality. Finished product turned out quite nice. Since Norwood ended up in stone area, I dug holes and used 16" sonotube for concrete footings. Four holes around 20" deep. Hand mixed around 1200 lbs. of concrete to fill sonotubes. Used laser level when doing the concrete to ensure everything would be level when I set the building on it since there's a 6" elevation difference from the front to the back. It took me a few weeks to finish everything since I only worked on it for a few hours at a time. We have a few acres of land and wanted an area away from the house for our woodburning firepit that we cook on frequently and a pavilion to keep us out of the hot sun but didn't want to spend a fortune on it. For the money we spent on the 14x12 Norwood I think it was a great buy. We lucked out and ordered while on sale for $2,399. Previous building experience also really helped with the assembly of the product. Added a few tiki lamps and some tables and now we have a great entertaining area.
Great product
I recently purchased a 14x12 Norwood Gazebo to provide additional shade and dryness on my deck. The kit came very quickly and all of the components were clearly identified. The instructions are easy to follow but this is a major assembly. I assembled the first end and it was clear that 2 people were not going to be able to stand this up due to the weight and the fact that it wasn’t balanced. I called a local contractor and between his 3 man crew and myself we were able to fully assemble in 2 days only working about 4 hours each day.
Good price
The gazebo turned out pretty good. Not to bad to build. My only complaint would be the wood. I thought I was getting cedar. Turns out it is Chinese cedar. It's not really cedar, but part of the cypress family. It has the same general qualities of cedar, rot resistance, keeps insects away. The wood on my gazebo is stained from the factory. The wood splits really easy and exposes the white wood underneath. Some of the bolts and fasteners broke or stripped pretty easy, but they do have a few extras in the bags. Overall it's solid and will keep the rain and sun off of us when needed.
[Rewarded Review] Perfect for our yard! A quality product!
We love, love, LOVE, our gazebo! We do a lot of outdoor entertaining and this gazebo was PERFECT for our yard. We chose to stain the wood to match our tiki shed. We customized it further with tiki/ beach themed items and an outdoor T.V. We get so many compliments from our guests! The gazebo kit arrived with easy to follow instructions and my husband was able to assemble it with only a little help along the way. This is a quality product and is very well made. The hardware accents the wood. We are extremely happy with our purchase and would definitely recommend it to others.
[Rewarded Review] It looks Amazing!
Bought this gazebo for my backyard project and it really looks amazing. Instructions provided are very detailed, easy to follow and the option of downloading an app in your phone or computer for visual instructions is really helpful. It allows you to zoom, rotate and basically see every step of the construction from different angles. For sure you will need help from another person to complete some of the assembly steps and maybe a third person when you get to the roof installation. Having all the parts very well identified and with all holes pre-drilled facilitate the work a lot. After completed, I added lights, a fan and a roller shade. Overall I am very happy with it and would recommend 100%. Attached some photos for your reference.
[Rewarded Review] Backyard Makeover
We have been working on a backyard transformation for about 2 years. It has been a long time coming but needed to get it done. The Norwood Gazebo was perfect for our needs and helped create a backyard space for entertaining, relaxing, doing homework, and watching football! We love the new setup in the backyard and are so glad we went with the Backyard Discovery products. We looked at a lot of different manufacturers and even designing a custom built gazebo, but the Norwood is 2nd to none!
Gorgeous...and HUGE
It is a beautiful addition to our large backyard and even though the description is accurate, I didn't realize how huge it would actually be in the space. My only criticism is that the instructions say it is a two-person build and "a third person would be helpful to install the roof." This is a huge understatement. We had four adults and it still took us 8 hours. The roof was especially precarious and we ended up purchasing an additional 6 hurricane clips to ensure safety. Do not attempt with only two people! I love it so much and cannot wait to add lights and a sound system. A couple pieces came slightly damaged, but not enough that we wanted to wait for replacement parts to assemble. Also, MOST of the pre-drilled holes aligned perfectly, but a few did not and required some creativity and muscle to make them work. When all was said and done, only the middle hole in the center of the roof and one hole a the end of the roof didn't align. It still feels quite sturdy. The video tutorial was helpful, but not perfect; pay attention to the angles of the brackets and try to keep pieces organized--the bags/boxes are labeled with the piece name/number, but not the individual pieces.
An Awesome Gazebo!
I just finished construction of my Norwood 12x16. We picked the BD Norwood based on the reviews and its certified ratings for wind and snow loads. Overall, the DIY build process was great. A lot of engineering went into the design and fabrication of this product. Everything was packaged and properly identified. Nothing was damaged in shipment. The instructions were very clear but did not show how to do certain steps. A Youtube video would be helpful. I (68) did 90% of the work by myself, working 3-4 hours per day over 7 days. The hardest part was lifting and positioning the roof panels onto the structure. My wife (65) and I did this ourselves using multiple straps and step ladders to install each panel. Having additional helpers would have made the process much easier! Squaring up the structure is critical to success. At the end, we had only two bolt holes (rafter clips) that did not line up perfectly. Structurally, this gazebo is a beast and I have no doubts about its integrity. However, the appearance is probably its best feature. The gazebo is beautiful! This is a relatively easy DIY project and I would highly recommend BD as a source for any outdoor structure. Now to add the decking!
Super Easy Build
Extremely easy to build and looks fantastic on our stone patio. I built this with my son, I'm 54 with a bit of woodworking background, my son - not so much. The instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow. The included hardware is organized according to steps in the instructions for ease of use. The entire build is well planned out and organized in the instructions. There were no missing parts and they actually included extra hardware for certain steps. I was surprised to find concrete anchors were included in the hardware. I started this build in 101 degree heat here in Texas, I'm not going to say that part was a walk in the park. It was a hot and sweaty 2 day build. I would not suggest that you pick the hottest time of the year to build this like we did! You will need at least 2 adults to assemble this kit, don't fool yourself into thinking you can man handle the entire side from horizontal to vertical yourself. Work through the steps, ensure that you don't skip anything and before long you will have it complete. There's no part of the completed project that I dislike. My wife purchased a string lights, ceiling fan and roll-down sunshades for the sides those are the only modifications I have made to it. We didn't add a TV but instead opted for a projector which works like a champ the only issue with that is you have to wait until evening to watch outside. I love that I can go outback now when it's 100-103 degrees, roll the shades down and sit comfortably in the backyard without sweating to death. I added rain gutters to the long sides of the pavilion so that rain doesn't make groves in our stone patio. We have only had it built for about a week now, but whenever I'm looking for my wife, that's the first place I look. As far as expectations, I'm blown away, I knew it was going to look nice, but I had no idea of just how much it was going to transform our backyard into a livable space. I would not hesitate to recommend this pavilion to anyone that's looking to purchase one for themselves. Oh, I forgot to mention, Home Depot shipping has the delivery date of July 12th, it was delivered on July 2nd so it was already built for the 4th of July holiday. Perfect timing as I had several days off from work to get it built! If you're on the fence about the purchase, pull the trigger, you won't be disappointed. I added images to my review: one is me sitting at the table underneath the pavilion drinking a well-deserved beer, the other image is the end of the first day. We got started late on the first day, or I believe we would have been able to complete the build in a single day.
We love our 10X10 Norwood Gazebo
We love our 10X10 Norwood Gazebo. All of the pieces were packaged well to prevent shipping damage, and the steel roof panels were even in a protective wooden box. The five shipping boxes were clearly labeled on the outsides and the packing slips in each box showed which pieces were in the box, making it easy to find the needed pieces during assembly. All of the hardware (including extras) was packaged in clearly marked bags, and each wooden piece was clearly marked on the ends. (I suggest laying out the hardware packages on a table - out of the wind - in numerical order. And if you can't find a certain bag, look again because it's there somewhere.) Assembly instructions were excellent, and there is also a helpful animated video to help understand the assembly. Assembly takes some time because of the number of bolts and screws, but that attests to the quality and strength of the gazebo. I was able to assemble the gazebo myself except for assembling the two end pieces together (three of us, twenty minutes) and sliding the roof pieces up on top (two of us, ten minutes). The finished gazebo is very attractive, high quality, and strong. I would definitely recommend this gazebo.
