In general happy with this product. Had someone put together for me & he did have some issues with back panel fitting properly. Got two of them & they butt together relatively well. Overall think this product was a good value & as usual HD was easy to deal with.

LOVE MY NEW BOOK CASE

I love this bookcase, looks just like in the picture. I was a bit worried espresso would not match my cherry Shaker style 6 drawer dresser which I bought at the same time. They stayed in their heavy boxes for weeks until my 3 handymen assembled them. I left them alone, there was a lot of banging, a couple of hours later they were finished. I'm so happy they are a great match, and are exactly what I hoped for. When I go into that room, I can smell the wood. My hobby room looks fantastic, and so tidy now. They match my Shaker style 5 drawer cherry dresser, I bought 2 1/2 years ago.

The bolts don't fit in exactly, causing my book shelf to be tilted and offset just a bit. The instructions were fairly clear and I was able to assemble in about 30 minutes. One shelf came with a split on the edge, but sometimes that can't be helped when coming all the way from Vietnam. Considering I got free shipping, I think the price was fair, but I'm not inclined to buy from Houzz again. I'd rather be able to inspect the piece I'm buying and have already assembled. In this case, local would have been better.

Bookcase of Average Quality

Illustrations for manual should have been drawn with more detail. Wooden parts not labeled. Backing is poor quality laminate, which easily warps leaving gaps. Not all holes drilled, either. Extra holes in some shelves.

It's not at all what I was expecting. I don't know what I was expecting, but I don't know if I would buy this again. I was looking for a quality bookcase for a reasonable price. It's not bad, but it doesn't seem super stable, and there are limited adjustments available. Only the bottom shelf can really fit hardcover books, so I was only able to fit about 15 average hardcover books :-(

FANTASTIC Bookcase!

This is an outstanding bookcase. I was looking for shelves for my home office and this is perfect. The box arrived in good condition and the parts were well packaged. It is solid wood and I thought it was so lovely that I changed my mind and decided not to paint it. I applied Danish oil to all parts (except backing) before I assembled the bookcase. As noted in the description, all parts are SOLID WOOD (except the backing which is very thin plywood). The assembly was relatively easy - I am a senior female and I was able to do it alone with the supplied allen wrench and a phillips screwdriver. I did NOT use the wall attachments - I will have books on the bottom shelf which will add stability and the upper shelves will only have light weight bric a brac so I am not worried about tipping over. I highly recommend this product. Less

Easy to assemble. Looks GREAT!!!! Like many others who have critiqued this bookcase, the back panels of this unit are a bit ridiculous. Surely for the price the manufacturer could have added a better backing. That said, now that my unit is in my home and the back of the unit is against a wall, no one will really know this seeming flaw or weakness. Will buy again if I find I need a second bookshelf.

This bookcase was not 38 inches wide. The shelves are only 36.75 wide. Only 2 shelves are adjustable and that is only 1inch up and1 inch down. There are gaps between the joints where the top meets the sides. I'm very disapointed.

Pleasant Surprise

Imagine my surprise when I unboxed shelves that are actually solid wood. I know they are described that way. Seems like that isn't always what arrives. These are solid, great stain ready finish. No more than a very light sanding needed. Excellent quality for the money. Will buy this brand again. Highly recommend.

Solid and looks good; but frustrating

Primary elements of the bookcase are solid and go together with relative ease. The sliding of the backing into the bookcase is clever and effective. The few premarked holes, however, do not line up with the middle shelf and the prepared holes in the two back support bars would split the wood on the bookcase if used. In the end, I just abandoned the two back bars. The really problem with the bookcase is that it needs to be four inches higher if you want four shelves for hardbacks. Based on the location of the fixed middle shelf, you have to set your adjustable shelves at the highest of the three prepared holes for the supports of those shelves. This allows you to use the second and fourth shelves for hardbacks. The third shelf, however, creates an area too small for standard hardbacks and many paperbacks. The first shelf can accommodate hardback books - sort of. The ornamental overhang from the top makes the height too small and the only way to get a hardback onto the shelf is sliding it in at an angle. This means that you cannot use the full length for hardbacks, as you will need to pull out some books in order to get out any hardbacks on the first shelf. Less

sturdy bookcase, real wood

This product is sturdy and has no toxic smell. The only part that is not solid wood is the back of the bookcase (which I suppose you could leave off if were against a wall). There are no pre-drilled holes for the back panel, so I'd recommend you have a small power drill charged and ready for the assembly. Otherwise, putting it together went smoothly and it looks nice.

Sturdy, look good, but a little tricky to assemble

Took about two hours to assemble the first one, ninety minutes after that. Some of the screws that hold the back of the bookcase to the shelves have to be placed with little margin for error, so be careful. One bookcase came with a broken shelf, but the replacement came in about a week. The assembled bookshelves are very sturdy and look great.

Very nice, solid bookcase

I like that this is solid wood, rather than particle board. It looks and feels more solid than an el-cheapo bookcase. The assembly was pretty straight forward. If you have your own ratchet set, I would use that with your own hex head, rather than try and use the allen wrench they provide. It would just take forever to do that. The one downside of assembly: When you're attaching the back to the shelves, the holes are not pre-drilled, so you have to be careful on the screw location and making sure you're right in the middle of the shelf and don't poke through the surface of the shelf. The reason I'm only giving this 4 stars is b/c there are two fixed shelves plus three moveable shelves. That would be fine, except there are not enough location options for the moveable shelves. So for our really tall books, we had to just scrap one of the moveable shelves. I may drill new holes for the shelf higher up, but that will be a pain. But overall I like the bookcase and wouldn't hesitate to get it again if we needed a another. Less

Good quality, minor frustrations with assembly

This bookcase is much sturdier than many of the ones on this site; it's made from actual wood rather than that awful MDF. The assembly is generally easy, and it can be done by one person. My main complaint is that the holes for the backing and the connectors aren't pre-drilled, and this made the final steps more annoying than they needed to be. The wall attachments look kind of sketchy to me (they consist of metal brackets and zip ties), but the bookcase seems steady enough without them.

Badly made and damaged

Bought 2 of these bookcases. Opened the first to find warped, chipped & damaged backer boards floating around loose at the top with no protection. Other parts weren't cut or fitted together properly and some were cracked as well. Repacking a total pain. Didn't bother to unpack the 2nd box. Both are going back for a refund. Not what I expected after reading the reviews before purchasing and paying for what should be quality wood shelves. SUCH a disappointment!!

Great value & looks good

A high quality, well designed & precision made, attractive piece of furniture (book case).Made out of attractive durable hardwood pieces glued together. The shelves have continuous strips running the entire length with cross relief cuts made on bottom to prevent bowing. Holes drilled in the inner sides allow for placing adjustable height shelves and could be placed to allow more distance between shelves.Assembly instructions were easy to understand. The delivery guys left the well packaged item propped up against the wall next to my garage door. I'm guessing it weighed about 80 pounds. I dollied it inside the garage and unwrapped the book case - no damage but a small mountain of cardboard & plastic. Individual parts were easy to carry up to back deck for final sanding & 3 coats of MinWax Poly Rub.My only negative comment is that the back was made of a sheet of cheap open grain Lauan plywood but 3 coats of left over satin latex house paint fixed the problem - the paint goes well & complements my interior wall paint.Made in Viet Nam - I was there 56 years ago & they had lots of trees (wood). Less

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the woods used and fine details (like grooving and edge finishes) present in the constituent parts.All parts were flat and fit together accurately to produce a square frame. Predrilled holes and pegs lined up perfectly with mating features toyield strong attachments... I glued the cross pieces in place to assure long life. Hardware provided is of good quality; an Allen driver is alsoprovided, so all I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver. I am painting the bookcase so I primed all parts. The back covers (3 pieces of 4mmthick hardwood) are especially thirsty... 3 coats. Finish painting is next.Overall, this was a very good experience, I would recommend purchase of this bookcase to friends.

My wife and I are both quite pleased with the quality and the appearance of this bookcase. It arrived extremely well packed in its cardboard box so that all the wood pieces were protected, and the hardware (along with a hex wrench) was conveniently packaged in small plastic bags. An instruction sheet provided diagrams (small but decipherable) for each of the steps in assembling the bookcase.Assembly was fairly straight forward and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the top, bottom, and two side pieces fit together and how the screws fit into the pre-drilled holes. The only problem came when I tried to attach the large thin sheet of wood that was the back of the bookcase. It slid perfectly through the grooves in the two side pieces but when it got to the top it would not fit into the groove in that piece because this third groove did not line up exactly with the side piece grooves. I solved the problem by taking a box cutter and shaving down (widening) the last inch or so of the side piece grooves so that they intersected exactly with the groove on the top piece. Once I did this, the back piece slid easily into the groove in the top piece. With the back secured in place on the top and two sides by these groves, in accordance with the directions I then secured it at the bottom with screws going into the bottom shelf of the unit.I should mention that although there were pre-drilled holes along the bottom edge of the back piece for screws to go through, there were no holes in the back edge of the bottom shelf for them to go into. The screws seemed somewhat large to me and I wasn't sure just how easily they would go into the 3/4" bottom shelf, so I took my drill and pre-drilled holes to accept them. This worked perfectly and the minute the screws were attached, the unit was nice and snug.The last step was putting in the shelves. There are pre-drilled holes on the inside of the sides of the case to accept small metal brackets for supporting the shelves. These holes are spaced so that you can have one shelf about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom and another about 2/3 of the way up. You actually have significant flexibility as to the exact height of the middle and top shelves. Both of them have three possible levels, each about an inch apart.The assembled bookcase feels solid and looks great. Given the fact that lumber prices have tripled during the past year due to Covid, I consider myself lucky to have gotten such a nice looking piece for what I consider a very reasonable price. Less

Solid Construction, Poor Value

This is a solid wood 3-shelf bookcase with a backing, a smooth dark finish and superior construction. I have had it a couple weeks. It has 2 sturdy adjustable shelves which appear like they will support heavy hardcover books, if necessary. It was relatively easy to assemble although the top, bottom and side pieces were somewhat heavy. It can be assembled by 1 person but 2 people would be easier. The holes all lined up nicely and all the necessary hardware was included. It did require drilling a few extra holes to attach the 2 support braces in the back. My one complaint was the price. After ordering I found it at several other sites for significantly less cost. When I picked up the item the sales person would NOT match the lower price even though I had a printed ad with the exact same item from the same manufacturer. These are truly fantastic bookshelves. Small details in production are inconsistent: I ordered two, and I had a few problems with a shelf peg that was broken in one kit, and some cuts that were not aligned in another — assembly in general is no joke. But if you’re looking for an affordable, real wood, sturdy bookshelf that looks absolutely gorgeous (and not like that cardboard-backed nonsense you can buy some places these days) I absolutely recommend. They’re exactly what I wanted, they just take some doing to put together.
