Think twice

Although this door looks all appealing, looks are very deceiving. After many months of a complete restoration job I go to install the door in place, I find out one of the things that is preventing me from setting the door plumb after having to trim a small amount from the bottom to git the rough opening, is loose hinge screws on the DOOR SIDE ONLY! Not the frame JUST THE DOOR. Turns out who ever at the factory where this door was put together, that it wasn’t checked by a quality control person.The holes that were drilled out for the hinge screws was two size’s bigger than required. Therefore the screws DO NOT HOLD! If anything the diameter of the hole should have been no bigger than a 1/16” for the screws to have maximum holdings power. It was clearly a 3/16” drill bit that made these holes. For the thread just spins freely within the predrilled holes at the factory prior to assembly. Disappointed that now here after a purchase of this amount I now have to find a larger size screws to match the hinge set that’s on this door.

Glad I order prehung. Came well packed for shipping. Once installed, the film on the glass was a plus in order to paint once installed and removal for clean look. Well worth it for the price and that secure smooth feeling of closing and opening and secured.

Turned out very nice. I used a polyurethane stain mix. The door turned out to be an excellent transition between our family room and the rest of the house. Door came packaged well with plastic on the glass which made for easy application of the polyurethane finish. I ended up utilizing a spray polyurethane as the final coat to get the finish I was after.

The door (slab) itself is very good quality. This came prehung and this is where I noted workmanship and material lacking. The hinges are lower quality and the door stop consists of approx. 1"moulding tacked to the jamb with brad nails. Installation of the 3 1/2" hinges were not aligned with the mortises on the hinge stile and the provided screws, in my opinion, are a bit short, at 3/4". It is imported from South America. I painted it so stain was not an issue. I replaced the hinges and used longer screws. I used a chisel on the mortises to allow better fitment of the hinges and replaced the door stop to match what exists in the home. Yes it has plastic over the glass which I think is a plus (protects during finish application). This door in the condition received was fully functional and should have provided long term service; I'm just a bit detail oriented. Overall a good value and priced significantly less than any similar door that I could source locally.

Should pay attention to the framing width, 4 inch frame...

Should pay attention to the framing width, 4 inch frame is not strong enough for the weight of the door. By the time you add in the extra wood and work it is cheaper and easier to use a similar slab door.
