Fruit tree covers

Worked very well and fairly easily to keep my fig trees from freezing during the winter.

False advertising

Does not ‘protect against pests’ as advertised.

Great net! Works beautifully.

This tree net saved our apple crop, which in past years was completely stolen or wrecked by squirrels. The net easily covered the whole tree, and we fastened it snugly around the trunk. With the zippered opening it was easy(ish) to put on. In early September we removed it and harvested. Next year we will try to make it easier to untie at the bottom so we can stretch the harvest out. We are just very happy that this net is available.

I was skeptical that this net would work, that it would fit our tress and that they would hold up for months of outdoor weather. But the net exceeded my expectations!First to note that the color doesn't match the picture. It's more of an olive green. But light still gets through just fine so that's not a big deal. The Large net is really big. And really heavy. You're definitely going to need some kind of support for a young apple tree as it would collapse the branches. You also need 2 people to get the net over the tree as it's too big and heavy for just one person. We used an apple picker pole and a tree pruning pole to get it over the tree. The net has two little loops that you can attach a pole to and a velcro opening that it made it easy enough to get it up and over the tree. The net was EXTREMELY durable. I was shocked. Several times the top branch of the tree was severely poking the top of the net. It protruded about 4-6" outside the surrounding netting. But did it break through? No. I either adjusted the PVC frame I had built or trimmed the branch so it no longer poked. But the most impressive thing was that it protected it from racoons. We had a crazy raccoon that would come each night and try to rip the net apart. He would latch on to the bottom with his teeth and pull and jump like mad. In the morning you'd see several cone-shaped pieces of the net sticking out where he pulled and some very small (pinhead-sized) holes in the net. But the net held! I was super impressed. For the structure, I used three 1/2" by 10' PVC poles attached via a coupler to make a single 30' piece. I then made another 30' piece and attached them together perpendicular at the midpoint using a screw and wing-nut. I then took 2 pieces of 3/8" by 10' rebar, cut them in half to get four 5' pieces. I then pounded each piece 4' into the ground at an angle so 1' was sticking out. I then slid each end of the PVC pieces on top of the rebar. When it was done it created a hot air balloon shape around the tree. I then used clamps to secure the net to the PVC poles. It was semi-stable, but was pretty shaky in the wind. So I took 7' T-posts and put them on 4 sides of the tree and ran a string from the PVC pipe to the T-post. That made it much more stable and it held up well against wind, rain and those pesky raccoons. We just finished our first season, and the apples were beautiful and tasty! The nets look almost identical to when we got them so I'm sure they'll last several seasons. Finally no worms in our apples and no apples being knocked down or eaten by squirrels, bees or raccoons! Well worth the money!

A neighbors tree has a severe WesternCherry Fruit Fly infestation that had spread to our tree - I’ve tried many things in the last few years, but THIS net prevented 100% of bird pecks, fruit fly, AND other damage. The only disadvantage is the difficulty to work it onto the tree( a two-person job), but I plan to prune a bit differently this winter to get it to be a better fit.

This net was completely ineffective against the squirrels having a buffet on my peach tree. They have chewed holes into the net where the peaches were up against the net. In addition, the instructions for installing the net are not great. In order to get the net completely “gap proof” you have to pull the cord very tightly, be prepared for rope burn. Don’t buy. I am very dissatisfied.

We used pvc pipes with nails in the top to get this over our tree. Once we figured out how to do it it was pretty easy. It saved our fruit tree! Every year hornets attack our fruit take over the tree, but not this year. Squirrels did gnaw some holes in the top and side, but it didn’t stop this from being effective. We used bungie cords at the bottom. Another nice feature is that one side is velcro, so you can open it up to check the fruit or pick some. This was expensive, but worth it.

We have several of these in the three sizes (big, medium, small). The small one is very easy to handle. The large takes two people and some fiddling with poles to get it over large irregularly-shaped trees. It does provide good protection. These are a bit on the heavy side. They will probably last for years.

So far, so good. I actually put it on by myself. Size medium is good for a 9 foot tree easily. Not cheap, but worth it if it lasts.

After the past two years of loosing the fruit from my trees to birds (some of which are being lured and feed by my neighbor’s multiple bird feeders), I purchased this netting. I bought three large and three medium nets. These are very high quality and are fairly easy to place on the trees. The included instructions suggest two people, both using long poles to drop the netting over the trees. This really is the best way, both for easy installation as well as preventing damage to the trees. This netting has a very tight mesh which works very well in keeping birds out unlike the cheaper nets that both damage the branches and allow birds access to some of the fruit. The only caution I would add, ensure pets are closely watched around the nettled trees. Twice now my Lab has chased small critters under the nets and been unable to find her way back out. These nets are of such quality that I expect to be able to use them for many years. Highly recommend.

To answer the previous enquiry about the sealed opening. It is a long strip of very substantial velcro all the way down the middle of one side so it is very easy to use for picking. We have now picked a perfect crop of cherries from our tree. The reason we bought this tree cover was because here in the UK we have finally been affected by the new fruit fly that lays its eggs in the fruit before it is ripe. We lost the entire crop last ear because of this. We researched what we could do and this was the only solution we could find. It has been a 100% success for us. We put the cover on soon after the cherries had set fruit as we were not sure when these little blighters start laying there eggs. We also did not want to damage the fruit or the tree whilst putting the net over. My top tip would be to make sure you put the cover on so that the opening is on the sunniest side because that is where the fruit will ripen first and it is easy to pick the branches on the opening (velcro) side. We found we needed to undo the ties around the trunk and get right under the netting to pick the fruit on the branches on the other side. We have been along to pick about 4 or 5 times and the but of shading the net gives has helped spread the picking time nicely. I just can't stress what a huge difference this made and what a worthwhile investment it has been even getting it shipped over to the UK. My only criticism would be that the instructions for getting the net over could be a bit clearer. But we found the video on the Haxnicks site and that helped. But as we couldn't watch tat up at the allotment we had to rely on the written instructions which as I say could be better written. Maybe with some useful diagrams and labels.

Update Oct. 2020. I'm upgrading my review from 4 stars to 5. We've used one of these nets for 2 seasons, the other for 1. Both have held up very well installed on our trees from June-September. No holes, rot, or damage except for minor staining where it was in contact with the ground. They did protect our trees from hail this summer at least 2 times. The weight does bend the branches down (we have dwarf apple trees) and I put tall stakes around the tree periphery to support that weight as well as a central pole mentioned in my original review. If you have hail and want fruit, I recommend these nets. Original review: We live in an area almost guaranteed to receive hail once a summer, or potentially several times. We have two dwarf apple trees (about 10-12 feet tall) which have been hammered by hailstorms in the past. Even the smallest, brief hail will damage the developing apples, little dings that eventually turn into rotten holes, thereby ruining the fruit. This spring, due to fertilizer and a good bloom, we had an unusual number of apples developing, and I started looking at hail protection schemes for trees. I bought this netting despite few reviews and the somewhat high cost, testing it on one of our two trees. I used a center pole of PVC pipe (tied to the tree trunk with zip ties, and stabilized at the bottom with stakes) to hold it up above the top branch. The weight of the net would have bent the top of the tree down, perhaps breaking it, in our case. I added several 5-foot stakes driven in the ground around the tree to hold the net off out away from the side branches (not 100% successfully but working OK). In our case the net drapes to the ground all around the tree with some left over. It is not tied to the center of the trunk as shown on the product box photo (we are not trying to keep bugs out, just hail off). The net is heavier and more dense than I expected. We ordered the 9.8x9.8 model, but it seems bigger than that. In any case it is large enough for our tree and then some. It's a darker green color which does not seem to admit much light. The product photos seem to show a light-weight, white material. As I write this I'm now wondering if we got the right product. I'll try to attach a photo so you can see for yourself (note hailstorm in progress in one photo). However it has done its job through two hail storms of several minutes, pea to marble-size hail. No damage to the protected tree, and apples seem to be developing OK under the lower light levels. The unprotected tree will probably lose all of its fruit as they develop, and then rot, from the small hail dings now present. Overall, I would buy this again (or a similar product that was lighter weight), and will probably do so next year for the other tree. Since it does not match the product photos I'm taking off one star. It does look like it will last for several years of use. Final note: I'm leaving it installed all summer, I will not try to remove it between storms as that would be too much work and the storms can come up on short notice. I'll report back if I have any problems, and maybe post a photo of forthcoming apple pie from organic, hail-protected apples...!
