You gotta put it together!
Yup, you gotta put it together. Arrived promptly. Not impossible to assemble, but not simple either. Almost all the bolts lined up well except for a couple. Patience, take a breath, have a drink and go back to the assembly. Some minor scratches, dinks, and dents, but not enough to go through the hassle of sending it back. It’s going outside so it will face the elements. Substantial. I put a lumbar pillow for it, but I think I will as get a cushion for the seat.
I put together the first chair and loved it. The second one however had holes that were not aligned as I got toward the end of putting it together. I called overstock and they told me to take it apart and put it back in the box. So frustrated as I was I got out my drill and made new holes. I had to buy new screws and I had stripped one trying to get in crooked hole. Hardware stores do have hardware called furniture hardware. I was able to get something very similar that worked. For the prices you pay for furniture you have to put together this should not happen. This was not a case of me tightening other bolts too early. It was simply made wrong. Love the chairs so far but not happy with having to modify
I ordered 2chairs both were broken I was able to construct 1 chair from them tho. Customer service was very helpful to send out another. I just hope it arrives in good condition. Otherwise I will be sending all three back to Order a different set. These chairs need to be packaged better. And the color is not exactly like the picture tho it is still a nice color. If I get this new chair and it is ok. Then I will be happy to give more stars. But for the aggravation of the time spent and not know how on earth to print the label to send back the one chair. I only give 3 stars they should ship labels I don’t have a printer
Beautiful rockers - sophisticated AND traditional!
Chairs look just like the image! The chairs are wide and roomy to accommodate all sizes of people. I think they are just barely comfortable enough to sit on without cushions, but a cushion definitely helps get the lumbar curve of the chair into a better position against the user’s back. Also, the arms will mildew in heavy rain, so they need to be cleaned. Otherwise, the finish has held up well in our Texas heat and in the heavy rains we’ve had over the last few months. Also, love that this style is traditional without looking too country.
pros and cons
This chair is pretty well built. It doesn't rock back very far and forces an upright posture for the sitter. The color was a bit darker than pictured in the listing which was good for me as it matches the rest of my furniture better. The wood in the head rest was split when I unpacked it but not broken through so I'm hoping it will hold together. It took about a half hour to assemble and required no glue - just screws as provided and was easy enough to figure out with clear instructions provided. I'm generally satisfied with the purchase given the price paid.
Let me start with the good stuff.... I bought 2 chairs. They are really beautiful, sturdy and wide. I love the rounded front edge behind the knee. The design is beautiful with classic lines. I felt like the color was just right. It wasn’t too “honey” colored as I had feared, but had more neutral to slightly darker tones with hints of honey. The seat is comfy to sit in, although I haven’t yet tested it for an entire lazy afternoon or relaxing evening. The most was 10 minutes and so far so good with comfort. Also, the chairs came packaged very well. Quick delivery from Overstock. The reason I gave a 4 star review and not a 5 is the difficult assembly. Let me preface that I actually love putting furniture together, but this turned into a beat down. Although the chairs are packaged well, there are tiny bits of styrofoam that get everywhere and some with static cling. It’s simple enough to figure out how the chair goes together.... it the bolts and hex wrench that will extend your assembly time. The directions are more pictorial like an *** furniture piece, but I clearly understood what to do. Other reviews said the holes didn’t always line up. Mine DID, but there were a few holes that just weren’t drilled all of the way through. There was some wood in the holes that wouldn’t let the screw pass all of the way through. I just cleaned it up with my drill no problem. But the most aggravation was when the bolt wouldn’t catch the eye. You had to use 2 hex wrenches at the same time, one for the bolt and one for the eye that locked the bolt into the hole. When they wouldn’t catch/thread I would get extremely frustrated. A few times I had to walk away for a second to “reset” and try again. I timed my assembly. It took just about 2 hours per chair from opening the box to being on the porch. My fingers were bruised from pushing on the hex wrenches. Now that I’m beyond the assembly, I’m very happy with my purchase. They are gorgeous chairs. I do agree with other reviewers to add a coat of poly to protect the wood and extend the life and look of the chair (that’s my weekend project). I do plan to buy 2 more eventually. I recommend the chair, but know the frustration factor is there with assembly. If you can deal with a few hours of that, then you will love this chair. Great piece for a great price. I included pics of the final assembly and one pic of how the chair was packaged in the box (with my cats inspecting it too).
Received this rocking chair with 2 right sides. Called Overstock and was pleased that they would send me the left side without having to send back the entire chair. Received the second shipment only to find out it was the right side again. I now have a rocking chair with 3 right sides. I have placed another call to Overstock requesting the LEFT side again! Let's hope the 3rd time is a charm. If I receive another right side I am going to be livid and request a whole new chair!!!
Terrible product
Terrible! I had to order this 4 times and ship/return this 3 times & it's still not right!! At first I ordered two and one was perfect & the other had the wood split and cracked approximately 7 inches long all the way through. So, I called & shipped the second back after assembling the first & they ordered another. When the third one came in it was cracked in the SAME EXACT PLACE & cracked just as bad, if not worse. So this time I just shipped it back & returned it to get my money back. So at that point my front porch only had one rocker. Fast forward a few weeks and I ordered it again (for the fourth time) solely because I wanted it to match the first one I bought. I didn't want 2 mismatched rockers on the front porch... Got it in yesterday and started to put it together & (no wood cracks this time) BUT several of the holes weren't drilled all the way through so we had to finish drilling them out before putting it together. So all in all I ordered this chair 5 times and only one of the 5 I received looks half decent. TERRIBLE PRODUCT & AWFUL CRAFTSMANSHIP. Although this product is terrible, I believe it is the company that made the chair's fault... not Hayneedle. Hayneedle has excellent customer service through out all of this & fast shipping. I do recommend using Hayneedle, but I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS CHAIR!!
Decent chair for the money,
If you've ever yearned to hone your carpentry skills, order a couple of these gems and your set. First you'll probably notice a couple of minor split pieces. If you've got some good waterproof wood glue, get it out and put them back in place. If not, go get some, you'll want it for the rest of the job. While you're there, get a wood chisel if you don't own one-now's a good time to learn, right?
