Very Solid Cooler with Some Room for Improvement
I’ve had this cooler for six months now. It keeps ice cold in 90 degree summer weather for 5 days on average. The telescoping handle is very sturdy and solid. I like the bottle cap openers on each side as well as the overall rugged styling. The oversize wheels make the cooler much easier to maneuver on rough terrain and soft, loosely packed gravel parking lots.
2nd Igloo again arrived damaged.
This is the second Trailmate I purchased. To be transparent, I purchased this through DICK’S website. The 1st one I purchased was damaged (lid was broken at swivel joint area along with scratches & cracks I. A couple different areas. DICK’S return policy states not to return damaged purchases items to their store and to contact the manufacturer. I called the Warranty US number and it says it’s not listed. I called the Canadian number and it went to a life alert survey. I emailed customer service, created ticket, they told me to take it back to DICK’S. I took it (not easy). They ordered me another one online at their store. It arrived today. Paint missing from front handle due to being scraped on black paint and chrome areas. One of the pole/umbrella holders were missing. And to top it off, there was a security lock alarm hooked onto the handle. I am not going to waist my back or knees on hauling this back to the store again. Huge inconvenience. Igloo needs to get their stuff together.
Trying to get to the Beach
Overall, the cooler was very nice and it did help me get to the beach easier. I was able to bungee my chairs, umbrella & beach bag to the top. The cooler also kept my drinks cool with minimal ice melt. When I reached the sand, the wheels did roll but not as easy as some other reviews stated. At least i wasn't carrying the cooler with the strap digging in my shoulder. When i took the cooler out of the box, there were various scratches on it. I know coolers get scratched and banged up but it was "Brand New". If it was on the shelf in the store, I would've put it back and took another one. Maybe the quality control guy was out the night before. I've never spent $200.00 for a cooler before. I guess i thought it would be perfect. I decided to keep it and see how well it works during future trips to the beach.
Great product with minor improvement suggested
I bought this product from Dick’s and used it on the weekend. I took it fishing and stored drinks for the family and food/ snacks. It was also in 90-100F temperature but I kept it under shade as much as possible. It kept the food and drinks nice and cold for the 2 days that we used it. My favorite feature is by far the butler tray.
Does not hold ice for longer than a few hours!
I bought this a week ago to use for drinks at concessions. I also used this to store ice pops to sell at concessions and froze them for 24 hours in the freezer. I then put them in the cooler along with the drinks, then poured in a 20 pound bag of ice and within 3 hours the ice pops were completely liquid. Half way through the day I had to add another 20 pound bag of ice and that melted too before the days end. I then added another 20 pound bag of ice the next day and that melted hours later too. The cooler was kept closed and in shade the entire time.
Almost hit a homerun.
The screws for the mini table clamps that are screwed into the bottom side of the lid were not tight. The table top kept falling out of the lid recess. Smart people know that screwing straight into thin plastic does not hold well. I fixed it myself with jack nuts (rivet nuts) instead of dealing with a warranty return to get the same thing. If they would fix this from the factory, it would be perfect. For the price paid, we should not have to make upgrades to something the factory should have addressed during the design phase. Other than that I love this beast so far.
Worked great for us
Got this for a 10 day trip and was surprised at the ice retention. Kept drinks and food cold for 3 days before needing to add more ice. We were in 100* plus temps with high humidity , but for the most part kept the cooler in the shade. Wheels made easy work on the beach.. way better than a wheeled cooler cart another family member brought. My only gripe is I can’t buy another basket to fit it and it needs more rod holders, at least 4 total. That’s the only things I would change on the current one. A larger version of this would be nice also, but don’t change the design! Just make it larger, at least 110qt.
The cooler disguised as a generator
I recieved this industrial looking cooler on Saturday and was camping with it on Tuesday. Despite the initial disappointment of the other 10 people on the camping trip that this was not a generator, the cooler worked out marvelously. The four day ice rating worked well and we kept all of our food for meals in the cooler. Even with the repeated opening of the cooler, we didn't see significant ice melting until the last day, after we packed up.
Missing pieces and quality control issues
I bought this because of all the features it offered and the sale it had going on. I just received it this morning and first thing I noticed was that it came with no basket or pole holders. Nothing was inside except the tray in the lid. As soon as I start to go over it, I see all kinds of quality control issues. The legs (if you call it that) or the metal bar in the front was completely unaligned with the rest of it and sticking far right. I look and can see holes where I'm assuming it was supposed to be placed but instead drilled new holes way far to the right. Where one of the tie down hooks are on the side of the cooler you can see that it's pulling away from the cooler itself.......so I doubt I'd feel safe actually using it as a tie down without it breaking. Now, to be clear, I took all the screws out and realigned most of the misalignment issues myself but what about the tie down? What about the missing tray and pole holders? Other than that, I assume it works well as a cooler.
WORTH EVERY DIME!
This cooler is incredible! I saw there was a Fourth of July sale and my eyes were drawn to the features and looks of this one, especially those 10” wheels!! I kid you not when I ordered it and it showed up my husband was like a child he was so impressed! It’s veey roomy!! Love all of the features and how it’s extremely practical! We are beach/camping people and this is the perfect cooler! Umbrella holders, the bungee grips, the silicone lined protective container, the huge telescoping handles! DO NOT HESITATE! This thing not only looks sooo sharp, it’s quality. We have been using it in our garage for summer just for the little table and cup holders when we are hanging out in there. Seriously worth every penny. The only complaint I have is shipping the box was mangled and it was only packaged in the cardboard. I wish it had foam or bubble wrap we did get a few very minimal, but still scratches I was a little bummed, but it’s gonna get scratched up anyways as we use it at the beach and camping! One of my favorite summer purchases!
Cheap material.
Bought this on Target a month ago. Took it to Yosemite on one of my trailers on July 8th and when I go to camp, I noticed that the cooler lid got burnt marks from the heat (cheap lid). Also, the dry compartment had some cheap weather stripping/sealing. It kept coming off. The area where you can bungee strap chairs or an umbrella is cheap material too, I tried to strap some chairs and heard it snapping off and at some point was able to see some foam from it. Overall, don’t recommend. Just buy a Yeti. Yeti’s are worth the money.
[Rewarded Review] Cool Looking Cooler!
I have gotten a ton of comments on the looks of the cooler, everyone loves it. It is quite big and won’t fit in a trunk of a normal car. The wheels are plastic but bigger than the ones on any other cooler I have seen. I have only taken it to the lake but it was easy and pulled with no effort. A few things to note is that it doesn’t have a lock/pull down for the top of the cooler. There is a tray on the inside of the lid that always falls out when you open it. The ice holds for around 2 days is hot temperature but that could be because the kids are in out of it. Yeti wins on the ice capability and lid lock.
Great but not perfect
LOVE my cooler- it looks cool (which isn't really that important) and I absolutely love the amount of space it has. It's durable for hauling up and down trails and hill. BUT, the lid doesn't seam to seal completely- it does at first but then everytime we go back to it its pushed itself up at bit- not a tremendous amount but enough to make a difference. I thought it might be from keeping items in the little tray in the top but even after removing all that its still been an issue everytime. We also have to fix the handle alot as things seem to wiggle lose from being hauled in the bed of the truck, I understand this will happen of course but it seems more frequent than it should for the price.... over all a great cooler!- just letting others know of our small issues
Disappointed
This cooler looked amazing! Had all the right features on it for a day at the beach!
Cooler seems great but…
I got a text message on Memorial Day about a Up to 40% off sale plus A free gift with every purchase
First time user review
This review is based off of only one use. First off, the cooler is very nice looking! It is constructed well. We loaded some beach chairs onto the top with Bungee Cords. on regular flat terrain, the cooler is effortless to pull/tow. The only negatives I have are that the ice melted incredibly fast imo. This may have been due to the fact that I did not load the bottom of the cooler with drinks and/or food, only half. This caused the ice to shift. The cooler did move through thick beach sand but a bit of effort was required.
[Rewarded Review] Great styling and amenities, but didn't deliver keeping ice frozen
I really wanted to love this cooler - all was great from handle position to exterior storage to internal capacity to giant wheels that seemed ready for any terrain. But, after keeping inside for a beach vacation, it was unable to keep ice/internal temps where I understood it should. Ice melted within a day - indoors in climate controlled space. What else should "4 days ice" mean. Could be lack of insulation or a latch/gasket system to keep the top affixed to the base when not in use. Bummer!
Must have for the beach
We’ve had ours since they were first released at academy sports - so I think about 2 or 3 years now. We’ve had zero issues. We use this to transport everything we need to the beach for the day. Strap the tent on top with the bungee cord holders. The large wheels roll through sand. A tray to eat our lunch on. Wet box keeps phones from getting wet. Seriously one of the best.
Wheels are only good part about the cooler
Took this out camping for the first time. Temperature never made it above 45°, the 30lbs of ice in the cooler were almost completely melted after 2.5 days. So I'm not too optimistic about how well this cooler will work in hot weather.
Best cooler purchase ever
I bought this Igloo for one reason, the beach. Other coolers throughout the years were a total pain on the beach. You either had to carry the entire weight or drag a full cooler through the sand, making the work even harder. This Trailmate Journey 70qt is phenomenal. Easy to pull through sand, easy on the back with the raised wheels and skids. Easy to access everything inside, upper storage rack keeps things cold that can't get wet. Butler tray on the handle is SO handy on a beach day. Storage on the outside for sunscreen, wet wipes, etc. Dry storage for keys, wallet, etc. means I don't have to a separate bag. Or, have those things fall to the bottom of a beach bag making them impossible to find when you really need them. Umbrella stake holders worked perfectly. Tie down hooks worked perfectly with my bungee cords for securing lots of items that didn't have to be hand carried. This cooler just makes our outings easier, so we can enjoy time with the family more. Thanks Igloo for such an amazing product.
