There are flappers that LOOK like this at the home center, but they close too soon no matter where the yellow float is set. These allow a complete flush.

Chain links were falling apart and flapper leaked anyway after substituting old chain

The blister pack was full of loose chain links because most of the chain had fallen apart. I switched the chain to the one from my old flapper, but it leaked worse than the generic one from the water company. Complete waste! I don't know what the float is supposed to do, either.

The flapper is simple to install, takes about a minute and works well. But the enclosed instructions are for another part entirely that isn't even in the parts catalog for this series of toilets. I went online just out of curiosity and there were different instructions, but still they are for another part, not the float. Kohler, this is pitiful.

I went to the Kohler website and this is the part they recommended for the toilet. Best I can tell it's exactly like the one it replaced. One problem is the float doesn't stay in position. it's a mystery to me how this is supposed to work. Even when I fist set it up it the flap closes too soon. And when the float slips out of position the toilet the flapper closes super quick not allowing a flush.
