I love everything about this box grater. It's sturdy, sharp, and easy to clean. My only complaint is that the "ribbon" side doesn't really make "ribbons". I don't know if I'm not using it right, or it's just a weird blade. Anyway, I would buy it again.
Wow, I'm really torn in two by this product. It grates really, really well - probably the best that I've ever used. However, the plastic frame just lets it down. After using mine for a few years, it accidentally slid out of my dish drain rack and fell on the floor. The plastic frame shattered - I would have glued it back together, but the metal grating piece popped out of the frame and I can't get it back in place. So, now I'm stuck - do I pay this premium price for something this fragile, or do I pay half the price for something that doesn't cut as well, but will probably last me a lifetime? I don't know....
This is their best grater. We have worn out three of them over the years. Versatile, sharp, safe, and easy on the hands. The double top handle, which is well away from the blade plates, makes it very secure while in use.
Build quality worth the money
This grater appears to be expensive but it's build quality is amazing. It's very sharp and grating is easy as food needs little force. It's built to last and to perform.
Unimpressed
Unimpressed. No sharper than my very old cheap box grater. Expensive and it should have a guard on the mandoline style blade - especially for the price.
I was going to order a replacement to our 4-sided grater with the 'elite 5-blade box grater w/ measuring cup', but after seeing the same reviews for the same failing parts, I'm going to look elsewhere. It's frustrating that you all seem to have done the hard part (a high quality stainless steel grating surface), but you can't seem to manage putting it in a box-frame that holds up. Our 4-sided box grater frame failed prematurely (lots of cracks). We were careful w/ it, but eventually just had to throw it out.
Maybe Not Commercial Grade but Really Good.
I know MicroPlane for a long time. I didn’t know they offered this. Having been a commercial cook I like good kitchen tools. I warn the blades are very sharp (except the “slicing” blade!) even knowing that I skinned a fingertip on my first use of the coarse grater/shredder on a potato … yes SHARP! (It went through the potato like it was barely there)
Very sharp but with a plastic cover to keep from cutting or scraping yourself. The finest sude can be removed, which allow you to scrap every bit out of the inside of the box. And it’s great for cleaning. Definitely a better box grater!
I have used this grater for many years and loved it. My son helped me grate one day and applied too much pressure to it and the top part cracked so I had to replace it. This grater is easy to clean and does everything you need to do perfectly. That is why I purchased this identical grater again!
Microplane Shreds all the Competition
The Microplane Box Grater does it all. Iwe use it mostly for shredding Gran Padano but it also makes easy work of carrots, zucchini, chocolate, mozzarella or anything else you want shredded to perfection. The one side slides out for ease of use, the stainless steel cleans up easy. We’ve used other mix graters and this is the best.
Fifth Microplane Four Sided Stainless Steel Ultra-Sharp Multi-Purpose Box Grater I have purchased. Every family gathering someone falls in love with it. Great gift and not at all overprived for longevity and value.
This is a handy box grater with all sides Microplane files. The one drawback is the single exposed blade (straight slicer) on one side. It is basically an unprotected razor blade - an injury just waiting to happen. I do have a separate mandoline, so I easily justified breaking it out of the box grater and discarding. Otherwise, any inadvertent brush against that blade would cause a significant slice to any human skin. If you always wear the cut resistant gloves when using the grater (i.e., chainmail glove), then this is probably not an issue for you. But otherwise this is a built-in emergency risk. Not too well thought-out.
This grater looks good in theory. In real life the side that slides to open doesn't stay in place. It falls out on its own from both sides, either from the top or slides out from the bottom. It is also very difficult to put this sliding side back to place. I spent so much time figuring out how to put it back together, that at the end had no time left to test the grater itself. So, back to Amazon it goes!
After purchasing how many buck-two-eighty box graters (or any grater, for that matter) at the supermarket or Dollar Store only to find out they grated nothing but my knuckles, I decided to go ahead and buy Microplane. These are the absolute best- I have had several hand held ones for many many years and theyÂ’re still as sharp as when they were new. I canÂ’t recommend them enough. TheyÂ’re worth the higher price because you probably wonÂ’t need to replace, at least not for a long time. Hope this helps!
The best box grater ever.
This is an amazing kitchen tool! The blades are very sharp so it's easy to use. The wide slicer is actually functional. And the other three sides are graters that I know I will actually use. It's dishwasher safe, but one side is removable for easier hand cleaning. All in all, a great product.
Poorly designed
The cutting parts are pretty good but the plastic body that holds it all together is poorly designed. One side of the grater slides out so that you can use it separately for grating hard cheeses — which is pretty cool — but after several months it wouldn’t keep in place and now it sits in a drawer. After another few months the side slicer blade broke off. And now after maybe three years the plastic frame is cracked through in 4 places. It’s still usable (on two of the four sides) but this is not an inexpensive grater and shouldn’t be falling apart.
While the blades on this grater are top notch, the plastic housing they are in is not. The grater blades are still sharp after several years of use, but the plastic surrounding them is completely cracked and falling apart. It says that it is dishwasher safe, but I wouldn't. Wish it would have held up better.
Best microplane ... ever
Like most people (who love to cook) I have had many microplanes over the years. Good brand, excellent product. This "box" format is my new favourite.
Title says it all. Nice quality build and very sharp, beware! Likely to never drop again, but at the time it was a nice deal.
I don't usually write reviews for products I purchase on Massdrop but this was such a colossal piece of literal garbage, I couldn't help but to write this.
