Not Coronado Maxum 7500 - closest I could find!
I would hate to give a review for something like stain - until it's at least 1 year later - to give an idea of it's performance. Coverage was good, goes on a strange color - but turns color to where it should pretty fast. Looks like a durable stain thus far - I was looking for a replacement for the MAXUM 7500 that Canadian Tire used to carry and no longer does - now that ticks me off - stain your deck with a high performance stain like MAXUM 7500 and never be able to get it again two years later - can't match the performance, can't match the color, nothing. This stain met my expectations for replacement of the MAXUM 7500 by at least 60%
Very disappointing results
I purchased this product 2 years ago, then again the following year. (Apparently I don't learn from my mistakes) the first application was 5 months after my deck was installed, the moisture content of the wood was 1%. Outside temperature was 83, the application began once the shade fell on the area being coated. No rain for 5 days after it was coated. I did one coat as directed. The areas that were subject to the sun, were completely bare of coating by the beginning of the following summer. Approximately 9 months after it was coated. This deck is a walkway, which is subject only the the morning and early afternoon sun. About 7 to 8 hours.
Cabot stain is a proven better product
I started using Cabot stain on my log cabin in the mountains of Tennessee in 2016. The local hardware store recommended it because of the rainy climate. So glad I used Cabot stain, sold my cabin in 2021 and it still looked like new.
Great Deck & Fence Stain!
Excellent coverage, protects wood surfaces very well & easy clean up. Low Odour & treatment lasts longer than most other products I’ve used. Wil definitely purchase again in the future when time to re-coat.
Cedar = Orange 🍊
Sanded entire 550 sq ft deck by hand, then applied brighter, then Cabot Oil (Cedar translucent), and followed all instructions, all! The problem is that the 2nd container has a noticeably brighter (orange pigmentation) than the 1st tin, and now deck looks terrible. Needless to say, I spent many, many, many days and hours Sandi g and working, so not a happy camper. I followed all instructions, so very disheartening. I will update review regarding how long Cabot oil works in addition our Ontario weather.
Looks great. For a minute. But garbage overall.
EXTREMELY disappointing. I have decades of construction, woodworking, and wood finishing experience, so I KNOW I applied the product properly. This product does not penetrate. It is simply a coating, and that coating is failing catastrophically. I had a few bad spots toward the end of the first year, so I redid those spots per manufacture recommendations. And now, less than two years later, the entire deck looks like garbage. I now must sand the entire thing down to bare wood and apply another NON-CABOT product.
Beautiful finish
I bought this two years ago and now it’s time to purchase more to refresh my deck. I love the finished look of the wood. It lets the beauty of the wood show through, drys without leaving a sticky surface that attracts and holds dust. It has worn away and so the deck should be easy to prep without sanding so I can redo the surface when the weather permits.
Frustrated
Extremely disappointed. This is the first coat of stain that I placed on my deck ever since the treated wood dried out two and a half years ago. It hasn't even been a year and there are now patches of it. The patches resist the water from soaking into the wood, but the bare spots absorb water. Now what? Do I have to put a ton more effort into correcting my choice of purchasing your wood toned stain and sealant because of the poor quality of your stain? Your stain isn't exactly cheap.
Cabot deck stain
This product went on nicely. I have an old deck that I thought would never look good again. After a thorough cleaning and applying Cabot, I chose a cedar stain, my deck looked new again. Dried fast and I couldn’t be more pleased…also did it myself.
Not true oil based
I was looking for an oil based stain. This product says it is oil based. Clean up says, clean with soap and water. Oil based stains use mineral spirits to clean up. Water base stains do not hold up like real oil based stains.
Very Disappointed!
We invested heavily in the Cabot Wood Toned Stain and Sealer for our very large new deck last summer. We could not be more disappointed at how it looks after less than just one year. The stain is almost entirely gone except in some of the edges. The amount of money, time, and hard work we wasted on this product is heartbreaking.
The easiest applying stain on the market
Save yourself a ton of pain and headache and just buy this stuff. Powerwashed and lightly sanded the deck. Used a foam style pad and heavy bristle brush from Cabot, quite simply put, absolutely zero streaking or weird overlapping lines. I wish someone would have wrote this review sooner. 1 year later our deck looks great, our wood furniture is perfect and the playset looks better then new.
Applied one complete coat on ext cedar shakes
Still looking decent after 1 year-7 months,
30+ Years of Durability
30+ years of using Cabots on our cedar sided house and still looks great. I reapply the semi-solid stain approximately every 4-5 years and looks like the original siding was recently installed, not 34 years old. It's the only product I trust for my house.
Use Cabots deck stain for curb appeal & protection
Best thing to put on your deck! It protects and shields the boards from water and sun and still shows the lively grain of the wood. After the rain you can see the water beading up! This is third time have applied the "Natural" tone yearly to our new front porch deck and stairs and it stands up well! We apply the stain with bristle brushes, not with a roller! This ensures that the oil/wax combo completely penetrates the boards and you get a nice even finish!
O.V.T. IS THE BEST OIL BASED STAIN AVAILABLE
My father used Cabot O.V.T. solid stain on his house and now I use it on mine.
So far it’s great!
I stained my new deck with this product yesterday, so only 4 stars because I am not sure how it will hold up. I built the deck in May and waited the summer out to stain it. I used the pressure treated sienna wood and the stain penetrated very well! The wood just absorbed it in and it looks great! I am very happy with it! I have a 20x10 deck and used one can. The colour is quite orange in the can, but once on, I think it does look like red cedar.
Ghastly orange color
First of all, this is not a one coat stain.... We have applied two coats and it is a ghastly orange color. We are all stunned about how our new, very expensive fence, is ruined, and we don't know how to fix this. Take an orange Crayola crayon and draw on your brand new cedar fence and that is the color of the stain..... How this company could even sell this color bewilders me. I don't know how we're going to fix this.... We spent thousands of dollars for our new fence..... It looks almost comical. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.....we are stunned by the awful color.
Works on my Cumaru hardwood deck
I’ve been using this for 7 years. Wood under the covered deck looks like it was stained yesterday. Wood on the exposed deck has to be treated yearly as it fades and loses water repellent properties. I use the Cedar tint which brings out the warmth.
Beautiful color that penetrates the wood of fence
We stained 1,500 square feet of fencing a year after installation of a DIY 260 ft x 6ft tall dog ear fence. The stain is a beautiful right color that lets the wood grain show through but has penetrated and protected the fence from graying. I was impressed with the product and will use again to stain a DIY pool deck.
