More Over-the-Range Microwaves

Reviews

So far, I love my Amana 1.6 cu. ft. 1000W over-the-range microwave. The price was great compared to other over-range microwaves, but I purchased this one for one feature - push button opening. The last 2 over-range microwaves I had used handles, and each broke (one broke twice). There's something about the angle you have to pull the handle at that seems to make them more likely to break when you have it over the range. When you read online reviews, notice how many complaints there are about broken handles. SO, I wanted either a pushbutton or a 'no-handle' grab it under the door way to open my new microwave. So far, so good. One downside to the pushbutton (which is above the bottom stainless band under the buttons, and there's a little learning curve as various family members try to open the door) is that there are some fingerprints showing, but I'm feeling confident that I won't be trying to fix a broken handle in 6 months. I've used this only to heat water and cook frozen vegetables, but it works well. Clock is easy to set (or you can leave the display blank), and it's got a turntable.

[Rewarded Review] Amana Microwave

I like the sleek look of this microwave. The inside was the main reason I got this microwave. Do to the fact, I have a splatter shield that is magnetic and it sticks to the inside top without any problems. For some reason , they have put a plastic plate on the inside top of so many microwaves and it limited me on purchasing any of them. I found that so frustrating. I do really like this Amana microwave for another reason is it does not have a name plate on the front of it, and that is a plus. it heats fantastic. The only downfall is it does not have the instant one through six minute setting, just the add thirty seconds setting. But it is a great microwave and I am thinking of getting an extra one for future use. The price is a great price considering what some costs of microwaves today.

Defective mounting system

The microwave internal mounting bolts on top were stripped right out of the box. HD quietly changed their appliance return policy to 48 hours so they don’t have to take responsibility for what they sell. We purchased the microwave and the whirlpool gas range (both are whirlpool products) from HD, both defective and HD refuses to stand behind them. I’m done with HD. This should be enough warning to stop buying Home Depot appliances. Go somewhere else

[Rewarded Review] No complaints and seems to be a good value.

Looks nice and seems to work as it should. Light is in the back and the vent is in the front which seems backwards.

To short life span

Have this microwave since july 2021. It was very necessary for me, since I have a bedridden son in respiratory ventilator and need it for preparing his nutritional drinks and meals, and sterilize. Today it started making a strong humming noise while I was heating his food. It never heat, was completely cold. A two year life span. On August 2021 I bought a Maytag washer and dryer on Home Depot too. Thanks God I purchase extended warranty for the washer because it stop functioning too.

Great Value

What I especially love about this microwave is that the name is not on the front of the appliance. We had a very expensive full featured Microwave from the supposedly best appliance makers in USA. Microwave began failing with its door sensors after 5 years. So we didn’t want to replace all our other expensive KA appliances and I did not want to spend another fortune to buy another KA Microwave like we had as its reviews showed this to be a failure for many. Not wanting to have a bunch of different name brand appliances we liked the Amana as it fit in with looks and style that matched the range below it. While I miss some of the features of the expensive one, most of the functions we never used. The Amana is simple yet does what we need most and so far it has performed great. Very pleased with our choice.

Functional and No-Frills Basic

To be clear and in my many years past, Amana stood for quality. But this uniot although funtional is cheap both in price and in features. The unit was listed at Home Depot and with the Vet's discount because, "I walked it out the door", was $190 compared to mid-higher brands like GE, Samsung etc. for about $374-$425. Installing it was a hassle. There was no drill mounting hole template in the box. It was printed on the bottom of the box in 2 sections. Once cut out, I measured the suggested top mount holes against the actual mount holes of the unit. They were not even close. There is no handle to open the door. I figured out there is an unmarked part of the display that must be pressed to unlatch it. The under the unit light is not at all bright on the top of my range. No instructions on the key-pad operation buttons. So...., the saving grace is it was and is cheap on the very low end of over the range microwaves. But for us, it is functional, no frills and basic.

My previous Over the Range Microwave (different brand) became unsafe...

My previous Over the Range Microwave (different brand) became unsafe as it sparked every once in a while so I thought it better to purchase a new one. The Amana was nearly the same dimensions but slightly smaller with 1.6 cu ft. However, it fit perfectly in the top holes already drilled and fit in the same back mount. Needless to say, I was very happy about that. The price of the Amana was excellent and I am very happy with the purchase. It has all the features of most microwaves and cooks or warms everything in the desired time frame. I certainly would recommend this product as it has all the functions I need and looks very nice.

Nice microwave….but bad shipping

This is a nice microwave, great features and sleek. Enough room on the inside to fit large bowls. Love the no handle, push button to open door. Exhaust to go out of wall. Light is nice and bright. Like that it’s one long filter and not 2 small ones. The features on the keypad is the usual, nothing fancy there but it’s all we need. What isn’t nice is how it got beat up during shipping and the main piece on the back missing. The part you need to actually hang it. Now, customer service was great. They FedEx the piece and we got it quick. But the casing is dented and twisted and gouged. Fortunately it’ll be covered by the cabinets when Installed and we’re hoping nothing is broke on the inside. We don’t want to send it back (yet) bc we desperately need it immediately. It took weeks to get this one. I’m hoping that if something is wrong we won’t have trouble getting a replacement. Whenever I called for the piece I informed the great customer service representative that the casing was wrecked. She assured me that if anything comes up that they will replace without issue. I hope. So, 4 stars bc of the shipping issues.

Do not purchase

We purchased this microwave for our new home last year and it worked fine for a few months. We started noticing sparking when heating up food. My husband called in and a tech was sent to our home. He couldn't replicate the issue so he told us to record everytime we heated up food and send him a video whenever we captured the sparking. We did as told and sent him the video. Another tech came to our home stating they had to see the issue themselves; again, he couldn't replicate the issue because it wasn't happening everytime we used the microwave. He stated we needed to send a new video but we had to show what exactly we were heating up because the issue was probably the food or the fact that it was a disposable plate. Both times their conclusions was there was nothing wrong with the microwave. My husband called the manufacturer and let them know the issues we were experiencing with the techs asking for video proof and when we would send it, they would look for excuses. He was told there was nothing they could do and only offered the send the tech for a 3rd time. Each time has been a tech from the same company, Uresti's. They claim no other company is available in our area. They came a third time, couldn't replicate the issue but I showed them the videos we had. They tried to blame the food I was heating up, because it was my dog's food. They said it had something to do with the ingredients even though they read the ingredients from the bag themselves and took photos. Nothing was done and we hoestly gave up. Later we sent them a new video showing the same issue with vegetables, I made sure to include the packaging from where I got them out and used a normal, microwave safe plate; however, they're conclusion was still the same, no issues. We honestly gave up until this past weekend the microwave stopped working. I tried to heat up food and you could tell it was struggling to work, the turntable barely moved and it didn't heat up the food. I took a video and a short while later the microwave started to make a loud screeching noise even though we hadn't even turned it on. I recorded this as well and disconnected the microwave. I don't know what to do because everytime we report it, we have the same results, they send a tech, refuse to receive our videos themselves and the techs always report there are no issues. Please don't bother purchasing this microwave or any other one from the manufacturer, customer service is non existent.

Worst Microwave Oven I've Ever Used

This microwave has a nice appearance and the buttons are easy enough to use, however it will stop powering suddenly while it's operating. The turntable still goes around and the light is on, but no heating is taking place. This usually happens on the second or third cycle. For example, say you want to heat some levtovers for two people. You put the place in the microwave, turn it on for two minutes, and it works fine. The you turn over the meat etc and set it for another two minutes, and it will heat for 10-15 seconds and then it loses the heating power which is noticeable because the pitch changes. Sometimes I will add a couple more minutes, 30 seconds at a time by pushing the 30 Seconds button, and after a while it will sometimes start heating again. Of course by now I have usually lost track of how long it has been heating so I have to stop it and check the food. Sometimes it seems to work a little better if I manually set the Cook Time and the Power Level at 9, but it will still stop powering after a couple of minutes. With Power Level 9 it's just easier to hear the difference in the pitch and I can then add 30 or more seconds and hope for the best. And then I need to heat the second plate. By the time the second plate is warmed up the first one is cold. When it was new we had a warranty repair guy come out and he said there was nothing wrong with it. By now the warranty has expired. I will not be buying any more of their products. We bought a matching range at the same time and that's another unhappy story.
