Trenton 16x12 Pergola

This Trenton 16x12 Pergola is fantastic. It arrived quickly, nicely packaged and it was easy to understand the directions. I am in a high wind area and was concerned, but this is extremely well built and sturdy. I made some concrete pilons to give it some character and elevate it an additional foot. I assembled it by myself with no issues. Highly recommend.

The sail shade is its undoing

The structure is as expected and looks great. The sail shade is beyond disappointing. Our GC installed it and it looked like it was a size too small. The corners strain to clip in and there’s a large gap between the frame and the sail edge on all four sides. I double checked the photos on the website and ours did not look as the photo depicted. reached out to customer service with photos to ask if this was as intended and I was sent a replacement sail. The GC came back, measured it in comparison and installed it. The replacement is the exact same size and has the same issue, so this is clearly how it is intended. On one edge, it hangs down between the slats. It has no stretch, so there’s no way to even pull it and secure it to have it be taut. It makes the otherwise great looking structure look cheap and sloppy and we don’t have the coverage that we expected to have.

Total Enjoyment! We LOVE It!!

5 people, two ladders, and 5 hours. That's what it took to assemble this wonderful addition to our property. Make sure to thoroughly read the instructions prior to building. Then, determine which parts need to be assembled. We had 2 people doing the pre-assembly, providing each part in a Just-In-Time fashion. 2 of us were on ladders and the fifth person assisted them. I was seriously impressed with the quality of the parts, even noting that all pre-tapped screw holes were cleanly tapped! The only thing I would suggest to Backyard Discovery, would be to include a second Allen wrench, as the first one was pretty ground down by the time of completion. We cut the estimated time in half with 2 extra people, allowing us to enjoy submarine sandwiches and a few adult beverages while it was still afternoon, as we christened our new pergola. 2 months later, we'd still do it! You should too!

Seems to be quality product, time will tell

We bought this one based on reviews and looking at lesser quality products in stores. I like the wide legs, black color option and overall appearance. Assembly took some time but we were patient and did not rush. Instructions were misleading in one area and we had to figure it out ourselves but I’m handy and it was not a big deal. Hopefully it holds up well and we get years of use from it.

Sail Shade Cloth - Necessary Fix

We purchased the 14 x 10 Trenton pergola this past Spring and are only now attaching the Sail Shade Cloth. We love the pergola itself, but there is no way the shade cloth would last. We live on an island in the North Atlantic on the East Coast of Canada, and high winds are a daily occurrence (100+ kilometer an hour winds are frequent). We realized quickly that we would have to tweek the shade cloth if we wanted it to stay put. It was a simple fix...pvc tubing with black tie wraps. It isn't visible from below and has been doing what it needs to. Reviews we have read tell us that Customer Service is great and these cloths have been replaced when damaged in high winds. We are hoping our fix will allow us to weather our storms and keep our shade cloth in place. It's an extra cost; but if it continues to work, it is well worth the money spent. Wish us luck.

The structure is shaky, even with concrete anchors. The sunshade is nowhere near big enough. The straps are too slick and the buckles are such poor quality they won't hold the straps in place.

Built to last - Looks great

Purchased a month ago and looks really good, modern, matches the trim on my home. Building was easy with 2 people - just takes about 4 hours. I live in Southern Michigan on a lake where the last two pergolas ended up across the street from high wind storms. This one feels built to last and if so - is worth every penny. Don't skimp out on the $500 pergolas that only last one season and fall apart. Will update later on the status but for now this thing is built like a tank. I purchased a screen enclosure off amazon (10x12) and it fits perfectly. I used adhesive hooks to hang the netting (to keep mosquitoes out). It's like we added a 3 season room to our home. The outlet panel is nice too - I have net lighting plugged in for night time and a bluetooth speaker that is ready to go at all times. Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing and beautiful!!

I got this a couple months ago and it set outside until we could get it put up when we opened the box the directions fell apart so we downloaded the app. This app was amazing it went step by step you could move the picture to see where things went and where it went. When I saw all the pieces I was a little worried it was going to be more then we could handle but it was so easy. It took 3 people and we had it done In about 6 hours. Very well made! Absolutely beautiful! I would recommend this product and company. They were great to work with and the product met all my expectations and more.

Looks amazing. Has one flaw...

The pergola has a sleek and modern appearance which works great in my yard. The one complaint I have is with the sunshade that covers the top of the pergola. The shade is attached by with cheap buckles and rolls up/ hangs down in several places.

Great-looking, sturdy and easy to assemble pergola

Sleek, modern, exactly what we were looking for. My husband and I put this together in about 7 hours total - this included some pre-assembly of the beams. It pays to read through the instructions, organize and pre-asssemble your bolts and washers before the full-on build. That took about 2 hours total. It took us about 5 hours to erect it in place on our patio which included screwing it into concrete blocks we placed inside of planters. You should note the interior height... it was too low for us as we wanted it higher for the hot tub. We purchased 4 planters and used concrete blocks on which to set the pergola columns, then screwed the column's footers into the blocks. Screwing into the concrete was the hardest part actually, not assembling this pergola.

Great pergola

Great sturdy product. Well thought out for assembly. So much heavier than expected. We bought it to go over part of our pool so we can swim in shade and it is perfect. Took a full day to assemble and needed three men to put it together at the end. The app for assembly instructions not as helpful as expected but written instructions were good. Looks sleek and modern.

Words cannot express how much we love our new pergola! It took a couple of days to get it up, but it won’t be going anywhere unless there’s a Cat 5 Hurricane. We live in NW Florida and had to make sure what we got wasn’t going anywhere. Even without attaching it to the ground/pavement it’s so heavy it would have to take a major wind to cause any damage. It’s plenty big enough for our fire table and not crowded at all. The quality of the materials used was great. Everything fit well and no adjustments or replacements were needed. We added lights to add to the ambiance and couldn’t help but fall in love. We spend many weekend nights outside enjoying it. Highly recommend this item especially for the size and materials used.

We purchased our steel pergola online. The 3 boxes were heavy and we are in our mid seventies so we hired someone to assemble it for us. It went together well. Our backyard is so much more useable now that we have some sun protection. And, it looks great! We have friends over for a meal more often now because we can eat outside under our pergola. We have received many compliments on it. So glad we purchased this.

We decided to go with the Windham modern steel pergola after months of searching for the pergola with the right style, price, and functionality we wanted - and we couldn't be happier. We installed it on our 16'x14' deck. It took me and my father in law about 7-8 hours to assemble and install everything. The instructions were pretty straightforward and all the right parts were delivered with no damage. We get a lot of wind where we are (sometimes up to 75mph) and this thing is solid as a rock. The steel design is sleek and easy to maintain as well. The sun shade easily makes 95° comfortable and blocks the sun will. The powerblock is neat and sorry functional. Overall we love this pergola and would highly recommend to anyone looking for one

Perfect Purchase

I love this pergola! Delivery was fast & professional. I came home to find all boxes neatly stacked in my driveway. The instructions were simple & easy to follow. It took a few hours to assemble. The product is well made. I love the look & sturdiness of the steel framing. No doubt it will stand up to the high winds in my area. It definitely compliments the poolside area. I plan to place outdoor furniture under the pergola. I am very satisfied with this purchase. Lots of compliments.

Impressed by the quality!

My wife and I are very happy with the purchase! It seems to be a very good value in terms of quality for the price. It really enhances the yard and should last a long time. The 12x14 took about 11 hours to build, about 6 hours on my own and 5 more with a helper. Tons of parts and hardware, BUT I was very impressed with the quality of the design, fit and finish. The paint was perfect and everything fit together well. The BILT app was helpful as a cross-reference to the instructions. The trickiest part was getting the seams on the long 3-pc joists to line up and be gap-free. They took a bit of finessing, but came out ok in the end. Also, as mentioned by others, the concrete anchors aren't great, you might want to upgrade to some Red Heads. There were no problems with missing or damaged parts, all perfect! The shipping guys even carried the boxes around to my backyard even though they didn't have to, which was awesome!

12x10 Pergola Installed - not too difficult!

Construction took 6 hours for 2 middle aged women to put together. Most of the time is actually putting smaller pieces together and getting a good assembly line going. The installation did have some areas where it was more difficult to fit together, but just tweaked areas and got everything in place snugly and holes lined up. Tips: have 2-3 ladders, 2 sets of drills. The biggest issue we’re the concrete screws at the very end, securing the posts into concrete footings - the screws are flat head, and even with pre drilling the hole, it is just really difficult to get a strong grab on a flat head screw - kept sliding off. One idea would be to go and buy different Phillips or other concrete screws.

Cat-5 Hurricane Approved 👍🏼

I purchased two of these pergolas approximately one year ago, and took my time over two weeks building them myself (mainly) with help from my husband at the end when I needed help to lift/hold things while inserting the screws & whatnot. I anchored both pergolas’ posts into 8 concrete pots I bought from Lowes. I filled the pots with concrete mix & set the J-Bolts upside down into the concrete, then bolted the mounting plate onto them while the cement was still wet so everything would be truly set & secured. This also gave us an extra 14” of height, which we appreciated b/c otherwise the height would feel a little low for us.
