Excellent hardware with a simple-to-solve puzzler

I needed to replace 22-year-old original installation door hardware due to weathering of the finish. (It still worked well.) The smart-key feature makes rekeying the lock to your old key (if that is the plan) dead easy. We now again have an elegant looking front entry handle-set with do-it-yourself ease of installation.

It’s locking without being locked

We’ve had this set for a couple months and it was working great and made our front door really stand out. Recently, the bottom lock started to get stuck without actually being locked. We have a baby and it’s super unsafe to have a door handle that is locking us out of our house without being locked. We are going to have to purchase a new one but what a waste of money to spend another $150.

Latch Locks Up When Left Unlocked

This unit is horrible. The bottom lock(door latch) locks up on it's own. Ws have gone outside several times, leaving the door unlocked and when we try to go back inside the house we can not. The latch is in the locked position. We got locked out of the house once. The other times someone was inside and was able to open the door. Now every time we go outside, we need to have our keys. I called the number on the box the set came in and was sent a replacement, which did not match what we bought and was not even a full set. I sent pictures of what we had bought and the name with barcode and they still sent the wrong set. I can't return it to the store anymore.

Very disappointed

Just had this installed on along with a new door. The top lock works fine. The bottom key does not turn. The installer says there is something wrong with the unit. Says I have to get a replacement (and pay more for reinstallation). Beyond disappointed. If anyone at Home Depot or Kwikset could suggest a easy fix, I would appreciate it.

Beware of the $50 installation fee.

Great product. Looks great and works well. Only four stars because after paying the $50 installation charge the fellow would not rekey the lock. He said to hire a locksmith. Locksmiths go for $150k+ per hour. If I wanted to call a locksmith I wouldn't have paid Lowe's installation fee. It's a gotcha.

Good quality with a handsome finish. The directions were vague. The drilling template for the bottom of handles final attachment was difficult to align. Pricing fair. Owned for a week. Maybe they could use a one key toggle for both the deadbolt and handle to open simultaneously.

The Kwikset SmartKey locks are unique as they allow the owner to rekey the lock. This feature is very handy if for example you want to leave a key with someone when you go on vacation and rekey the lock with your original key when you return. A big money saving feature if you want to rekey your locks after a security incident such as a stolen purse. The only cost is new keys, instead of new locks or a locksmith fee to rekey your existing locks.

Wrong door knob. Our broke on the forth.

Good quality door lock wrong set. Wrong one. It faces left and not right. It is the wrong door knob. We got it all the way on and it was the wrong one. Our hinges are on the inside. He had one hour to replace it. He was totally replaced but he could not do it because it was the wrong set. Over the 4 th of July we got locked inside our house. Tom got a small temp door knob to put on. We bought a new formal set. But it’s is the wrong one. You said you were going to pick it up tomorrow morning but it is not off the door yet. It is his house I’m not a locksmith. He said we will buy it somewhere else. We will not be ready by 9 am tommorow because he has to go to work. I can not take it off myself.

Decent product - read this for a quick tip if you have new construction/ "Eco" conscious homes, esp. in California

Ok - so this will be useful to those of us blessed enough to buy new homes, and miserable enough because these eco-conscious materials are simply not your granddad's materials. If you bought new construction and didn't replace your front doors, chances are you have part wood and part foam in your door. You will know this simply by how light the door is. And, most importantly, the builders and their "workers" likely did a bad job of, well, almost everything. So you will likely find that your door locks and plates are installed in a messy way, perhaps missing screws here or there, etc. When it is time to replace the locks, you may likely not need the plate that goes with the top deadbolt fo the interior side of the lock. So if you find that it is difficult to get the part to stay in place as you are installing, just forego the plate if you can. Also, make sure the previous work that was done is in actual alignment with your part. My original door locks were Kwikset and the house is new, so no real problem there. Best advice: If you have a partly foam-ish door, and you can spare the money, go ahead and buy a brand new, heavy door first. I am planning to do this after all. I have owned older homes before, so I was not prepared for this kind of problem. Sigh. They just don't make it/them like they used to anymore.

High quality product

Excellent Product. The only reason I took off one star is that my original bottom hole did not line up with any of the plate holes so I had to drill a new hole. I used the paper stencil but was difficult to make it line up with a level. It’s not level bc of this. I wish I had realized to use the cardboard insert that it came with to drill the hole instead. The cardboard edge would have allowed me to use the level easily. Just make sure to select the middle hole bc it appears to line up with the stencil I believe, but double check!I showed a photo of this. Also, be careful not to strip the doorknob screws bc of the angle they tend to do this. I wish I had an angular screw tool to avoid this issue. The product otherwise is durable feeling and very attractive.

Good 2 lock lockset

We moved to a new house and our front door came with a contractor grade thumb operated entry latch with deadbolt. But only the deadbolt was keyed. The entry latch was just a latch.

We really love this coloring. We liked this set so much, just disappointed that the deadbolt was a latch system and not double-keyed. So we bought the double-keyed deadbolt separate that matched the set. It was brilliant that you are able to Re-key these sets yourself, so we were able to rekey allowing it to still just need one key even though it was a separate deadbolt from the kit. We personally do not like the latch deadbolts, especially when we have glass in the doors. So to prevent possible person breaking glass and just reaching in & flipping the deadbolt latch, we use only the double keyed ones, always removing the key and keeping away from the doors in a hidden location. This re-keying option is truly brilliant and the quality is great!

We purchased this because it was the only one we could find with a lock in both the deadbolt and the door handle in the oil rubbed bronze. BUT... Very disappointed for the price. We purchased in April, installed it in May, so we never took it out of the box when we first got it. Wish we had. The metal feels lightweight and cheap, not very sturdy at all. It feels like anyone with a small hammer could just break it off. So we added an extra security reinforcer plate. Then to make matters worse, after spending over an hour adjusting the door, the strike plate and the mechanisms, when trying to open the door from the outside, it sticks, badly, so that a lot of pressure has to be put on the tab for it to release the latch. Afraid that after doing that so many times, it is just going to break. If we could take it back, we would. Would not recommend this at all.

[Rewarded Review] Interior door knob lock does not work

I've tried two of these. The first was installed by the door installer when we bought a new front door, and the second I did myself because of issues with the first. On the first lockset, the exterior (keyed) deadbolt often got stuck and the key could not turn. It was necessary to wiggle the key around, remove and reinsert in order to be able to turn the key to either lock or unlock. Additionally, the interior knob's lock is shoddy. Sometimes it works fine, but about half the time it is either difficult to turn or turns but not quite the full 90 degrees and then the bottom lock is not actually locked.
