Unreliable. Changes its own settings without touching the lamp. Will turn on or off randomly.
Item does not work well
I'm replacing a 5 year old Westek Touch Dimmer that finally gave up the ghost. Unfortunately, this one just doesn't cut it. It only works sporadically and never brightens to an acceptable level. I will be returning it.
Have used these plu-in touch dimmers in the past successfully.with a metal lamp. I purchased two of these after lightening burned one out. One of them did not work at all; the 2nd sort of worked but not consistently. Sad that I had to return them.
It does not work!
I bought this touch dimmer because I was very pleased with the performance of two Westek touch dimmers I bought several years ago. The Model Number on those two dimmers is 6004C. They perform well with both incandescent and dimmable LEDs and wanted to buy another. I could not find this model available on the internet so last month I bought the "Model# 6004BC" from Home Depot. The touch dimmer that I was sent is labeled Model 6004M. The Model 6004M did not work with incandescent light bulbs.
Did not work, right out of the box. Yes, the lamp has incandescent bulbs. And yes, this same lamp had the same dimmer on it for years, but that dimmer finally quit. I’m returning this one.
doesn't work with LED bulbs
Only works with Incandescent and halogen bulbs (as printed on the package) - really? Is this 1991 or 2023? You can barely buy incandescent bulbs now. This product needs to come off the market!
I couldn’t get it to work on a lamp that I was replacing a wired dimmer on. I switched the power wires and it worked for a few uses then nothing. I returned it and went back to the wired in model. I believe it was defective and would not hesitate to try one on another lamp in the future. It would be a lot easier then to wire one in.
I bought 2 - both did not work.
I have an older version of this made by Westek and decided to buy 2 more, one for a different lamp and one for a spare. It's been my experience that these Westek touch dimmer lasts 5-8 years before they stop working so I wanted a spare.
Unlike my old one, this one requires hard slaps on the lamp to work
These are highly variable. An older one I had worked great on my lamp and responded by simply touching the lamp. Then when it had to be replaced, I went the same route. This one requires you to slap the lamp hard, and sometimes several times. I’m thinking of returning it because of that.
Worked for 5 years, then died
Purchased new in 2018 from Home Depot. Used on a lamp (bed side) with a 40W incandescent bulb. Recently it began to turn on and off by itself. It died today when the filament in the bulb itself shorted out and stopped. I tried a new bulb but the dimmer would not turn off, but only allows the full current to pass through. It's probably not worth buying a new one. I'm going to get a Leviton table top dimmer cord instead. I have one on another lamp and it works fine.
Don't waste your time and money. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
Like so many others who bought this product, I was hopeful that I might get one that worked. I plugged into it a beautiful all brass antique lamp and then plugged the dimmer into a fully functioning outlet. Nothing. The lamp did not light and did not respond when touched. I removed the dimmer and plugged the lamp back into the outlet. It immediately lighted up. The dimmer is going back to Home Depot in my next visit there.
Purchased 2, Both units did not work
Followed all instructions, used incandescent bulbs on metal / brass Steiffel Lamp. Both of the two units did not work. Used 60 w and higher bulbs.

Doesn’t work on all lamps. Has a tendency to stop working at about a year sometimes less. Will turn lamps on and off during thunderstorms. My wife likes them otherwise I wouldn’t purchase.
Not reliable
I hate to give it a bad review since it has given our family many months of laughter about the "possessed" ghost lamp that goes on and off by itself. But I finally had to give up. I'll install one of the in lamp wired in modules which work with no issues. I did call and leave a message with Amer-tac support but didn't get a call back. Nice idea but the electronics just don't work.
READ THIS FIRST BEFORE BUYING
I am an electrician and I learned 3 things testing these:
KEEPS BLINKING ON AND OFF ALLLLLL DAY
DO NOT BUY- I had 2 of these in the past back in the 90's they worked great. THIS ONE is turning on and off 20 times every 1 hour, is flicking through all the dimmer stages all day so far. GOT TO GO BACK.

Works great. Only problem is it wears out or starts to act erratically after several months. But, for the price it is worth buying another at that time. Wish it lasted a little longer. Then I would gladly rate it 5 stars
Not built to last
I have had similar experience to many of the reviewers. The unit worked great when it work. It slowly started to fail, sometime turning on/off light by itself, other times changing the level. When it did work, it was exactly what we needed. It is pretty clear that it was produced with inferior materials that just do not last.
Turns any lamp into a touch lamp
Please read my review all the way to the end, especially if you have a 3-way socket. Just plug your lamp (with socket in the "on" position" into this unit, and plug the unit into the wall. It's ready to go. Touch your lamp on any metal part, including the harp and wire supports of the shade, and you go from dim to medium to high light output. Touch again, and the unit turns off. It even works on a 7-watt bulb, and up to a 200-watt bulb. Do note that it will even work on a 3-way socket with one simple change. Replace your 3-way bulb with a standard bulb. Then switch your socket to the 2nd position and leave it there, and this unit will work. Unfortunately, this directive is not printed onto the outer directions in the blister pack, and as a result, I thought my entire lamp had something wrong with it.

The Westek Plug in Touch dimmer works very good. The only thing is if you put 2 on the same circuit, if you touch one dimmer it may control the other dimmer. Also I know that if lighting strikes outside some where it will affect the dimmer. But that is the same for a lot of dimmers. Otherwise it is much easier then if you have to wire up the kit in the lamp base.
