Nice hood

Very nice product. Installation instructions are very clear. If you have a low ceiling, 9ft or less, you will need to modify the Recirculation duct to install the chimney correctly if you set the hood 30" or higher above the range. Not a big deal just an FYI.

Great looks and functionality

Beautiful and functional sums up this hood. The three speeds gives you an option to use for your cooking needs.

Blows hot air down into the stove from the sides

We installed our GE vent hood, Model #JVW5301SJSS, between two cabinets with about a 5" gap on each side. I noticed that it blows hot air down into the stove from the sides. Should it be blowing hot air in this manner while I’m cooking?

Bright Light and Quiet, Powerful Fan

The hood vent, fan and stove light are sleek, beautiful and wonderful. The fan is powerful and quiet. I appreciate its great suction and having 3 settings. It really keeps the cooking odors to a minimum. (I chop onions nearby so I can be near the fan. No more tears!) The light has 2 settings and is very effective. At night, after the dinner dishes are done, the low light makes a very nice night light for walking through the kitchen. The higher setting makes cooking in the evening a real pleasure with great visibility. The surface of the stove is brightly lit but without any glare. There are 2 filters for capturing particles and grease and keeping the air fresh over the stove. Well worth the investment. It took two installers 3 hours of pretty intense work to put in, necessitating the power to be shut off to the kitchen, but they were well trained and diligent. The result is a more beautiful and healthy kitchen with more pleasant conditions for the cooks in the family.

There she sucks!

I have had this hood for two years in my newly constructed home (built 2022). It works well but needs a trim kit for the top. I have been unable to find one via GE, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Due to an issue with the drywall installation, the chimney does not fit up against the ceiling and there is a gap. It looks like crap... My husband is going to have to install crown molding in the kitchen to hide it.

Motor died after 2 years

This hood vent worked great for two years. Then, it started squeaking and it randomly shuts off. We had a GE technician come look at it. He said the motor was dead and it would be better to just replace the entire hood vent with a better one because if we replaced the motor, it would just die again in two years. He said this is partly due to the fact that we have a gas range, and gas ranges gunk up motors more quickly than electric ranges. I would not buy this product esp if your stove is gas.

Very disappointed

Not a great product. Highly disappointed. The unit stopped working completely . I bought this model 1.5 years ago and it stopped working a few months after the warranty expired!!! My luck! It started with a weird screeching sound when I turn on the fan. The sound would go away after some time but then the motor would stop after sometime. It would restart again but again stop midway.. referred to 2 different technicians and both said that it was the fan blower/ motor that is defective and needs to be replaced . Just the replacement would cost be between $300-$400 (excluding labor cost). The light is working fine. Not happy with this product.

Poorly Designed - Avoid!

I've owned one for 5 years and it works - until enough grease bypasses the filters and coats the inside of the motor with grease. The motor end bearing becomes contaminated and eventually fails. Electrical connectors, blower cage and exhaust damper become full of grease - all because there are no baffles before the filters and grease gets sucked between filter frames.

After shopping in the $200-400 range for hoods I realized you get a lot better quality by paying a little more.

Will fourth time be the charm?

Hood 1: Opened it up, it was severely blemished, straight out of the box. We’re talking seriously ugly. Factory problem. Appliance store said “no problem”, we’ll replace it.Hood 2: Looked great out of the box. Looked great on the wall. Turned it on—it makes a terrible high-pitched chirping sound you can hear from a long distance. Called for service. Service tech said “need to replace the motor”, or since it’s brand new, appliance store said you can order another one. Ok.Hood 3: another one blemished straight out of the box. What on earth is going on in this factory? Do they have no quality control? So the saga continues...we are waiting on unit 4. Very frustrating. On the plus side, the one I have now looks nice, and it seems to function fine without excessive fan noise (other than the aforementioned high-pitched chirp). Lights do a good job illuminating the cooktop (though I would prefer LEDs to halogens). My ratings are for unit 2, which is on my wall while I await unit 4.I like the color and my other slate appliances (fridge and DW) were pristine.

Poor quality

Not terrible really, but two things wrong with it. First of all, the little screws they supply for the top of the chimney are the cheapest crap. Strip out immediately when you try to use them. The other issue is the vent slots in the bottom section of the chimney. These vent slots are for people who choose the self venting option. On a good unit, these slots are in the top section so you can face them down and hide them when you are venting outside. This unit you don't have this option so the venting shows through the side of the chimney. I have painted the duct in the past when this happens, but it's not perfect. Also, the instructions are horrible.

Loud & Electrical Issue

I like my hood because it was affordable and it converts so that the air circulates through a filter. Venting outside isn't an option for me. That said, I gave the hood a 3 star review because 1. the hood is loud on low and I only use high when I'm frying something on the stove, and 2. a recent incident occurred involving the internal electrical wires that connect the light bulb to the control panel. After 4 years of regular use, the right light started make funny buzzing noises, then popped and burnt out. We investigated and the electrical cords connecting the light socket to the main controller touched the hot halogen light bulb, burning the cord in two. We shortened the wires to an appropriate length so there was barely any drag. See photos. I bought my hood in 2016, but if the manufacturer is still using the same design, then you might want to shorten those electrical wires just to be safe.

Drips Oil and is noisy

We've had our vent hood in our new home for about 6 months. For the last 2 weeks, it has been dripping oil out of the fan assembly. We called GE and a service tech told us it was a design issue. There is only 2 of us, we don't fry foods often and we have never had an issue like this from any other vent hood. We have cleaned the filters multiple times and wiped down the blower assembly, but the oil keeps coming. This issue and the noisy blower and poorly designed column means that it is getting replaced. Called GE customer service and was on hold. I tried multiple times to utilize the call back feature, but it didn't work. After having our new GE dishwasher replaced and our new GE refrigerator serviced, we will never buy another GE appliance and I suggest that you do not either.

So moved into a 20 year old house with a 20 year old under cabinet, non-vented range hood. Every time I did steaks or cooked with a wok I had a 3 alarm fire alarm go off. I knew I needed to get a more powerful exhaust hood that exhausted to the outside. It ended up being a big job and I hired a contractor to remove the cabinet, install the hood and create a vent to the outside wall. I got GE b/c you just see it everywhere in new home builds and it looks good. It also matches the slide-in range.

Lives up to advertised claims

Model JVW5301SJSS (Stainless Steel) Kitchen Exhaust Hood pretty well lives up to its advertised claims as to features, efficacy in exhausting Kitchen air to the outside (mine is vented) and eye appeal. Following the provided detailed installation instruction is imperative - which is why I decided to install myself rather than palming off to a contractor who may be apt to time-saving shortcuts.
