It works, but it is fussy
The water pours through way to fast for good coffee. The paper filters are much better at preventing the fast flow. AeroPress recommended inserting the plunger right away to slow the flow. I found a better method. I bought the flow control filter cap and combuined with the stainless steel filter it works great—just as well as the paper filters. Sort of an expensive way to save a few bucks on paper filters, but I think the taste is a bit more robust with the stainless steel filter. (Or possibly it is cognitive dissonance at work.)
richer better tasting coffee
I love this stainless steel filter over paper. First of all, the ability to reuse and not waste paper is a dream. The coffee itself is richer, better tasting as you get the flavor compounds of the oils. It is a step up from French press. And this cleans with a quick rinse! I highly recommend over the paper filters the Aeropress comes with. This review was written by a full-time Bed Bath & Beyond employee. I received the product for free in exchange for my honest feedback.
works like a dream - no grit
You can't beat reusable. This filter is extremely high quality. As a coffee lover, I appreciate getting the extra oils from the coffee. And its so simple to use and easy to clean. The price value seems high, but its an acceptable tradeoff for not ever having to worry about buying paper filter replacements. Plus, the coffee tastes better. Love Aeropress but metal filter doesn't work at all
Tried it with Aeropress Flow Control Filter cap, the way I usually brew esspresso style coffee with paper filter. The taste with the metal filter was well-bodied but in a dull and toneless way. Opposing to paper filter the metal one didn't produce any crema at all.
This works well, just not my fav
I have really mixed feelings about this, so perhaps this product is not for everyone. I like the idea of this filter being reusable. I like the idea of saving weight and space while traveling. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I simply prefer the taste I get with the paper filters. That “French press taste” is an acquired sort of thing. Still, I frequently use this during business travel or camping, and I like the option of experimenting. If those factors appeal to you, add it to your kit. Its inexpensive.
Love the Flow Control Cap
I brew with a two minute immersion. The original cap allows a small amount of coffee through (I don’t trust myself with inversion at 5:30 am), whereas the Flow Control cap keeps all the liquid in the barrel. So the flow control gives me fuller flavor.
A Coffee Lover's Hope for Improvement
I recently purchased an AeroPress XL and a metal filter, and was quite disappointed with how poorly designed the coffee brewing process is with the metal filter. Later, I discovered the inverted method (which the company doesn't recommend), used by nearly all world AeroPress brewing champions. This became my saving grace, so my review won't be entirely negative. Overall, my experience with the AeroPress has been very positive, and I like the product.
Does not work well
I have been using an off-brand steel filter for a couple years, and decided to try the branded version. Unfortunately, the water runs through way too quickly. I’ve adjusted the grind size and followed all the recommended advice but no matter what I do my coffee tastes so watery. It’s more expensive than other versions so very frustrating that I am probably just gonna have to throw it in the recycling bin. I reached out but they replied and said that they know that the water runs through at a quicker rate, so clearly they are aware of the design flaw. Definitely do not recommend.
Great alternative and easy to use!
Works great as a go-to method, especially if you get tired of having to buy their paper filters. However, I will say that the paper filters don’t allow as much to get through, and while this can give you a richer kind of coffee, I’ve noticed that with a little time and effort regarding my grinding skills with their coffee press, I can get it to my liking. In my situation, I checked out the reviews beforehand. So, this was something I was made aware of before using it and it was a trial-and-error kind of thing, but I was grateful to those that mentioned doing so because I knew what to expect (and maybe my review will do the same). I noticed someone said that it was on the sharp side, or at least has the possibility of cutting yourself while washing it, but I haven’t had an issue this way. But, again, I would recommend being careful because it is thin steel (I put less effort into it than when I handwash knives but more effort than I do with cup/container lids). It is quite easy to use disregarding the “grind situation,” and I recommend it if you’re looking for something eco-friendly, reusable, and convenient.
Doesn't work with Go Plus
Got my AeroPress Go Plus and Stainless Filter in today. I eagerly cleaned everything to whip up a quick cup of coffee to test out my new brewer. Unfortunately I believe that this filter doesn't work with the Go-Plus at all. Using the absolute finest grind setting on my Burr Coffee Grinder isn't even enough to make this filter work properly. When placing "1 heaping scoop" of ultra fine coffee grounds into the brewer and going to add in the water (no mater how slowly you pour) all the water just goes straight through the grounds and the filter. You'll end up filling the cup with water before you'll get any to stay in the plunging base. Incredibly disappointed I've reached out to customer support hoping I simply got a dud....but reading online everyone seems to say you NEED the Flow Control cap in order to use this....Which is completely absurd. The same grind level works perfectly with the included paper filters. I couldn't recommend this to anyone. I'll update this review if I do end up simply having a dud somehow. But I'm highly doubting that's the case. Again I used the absolute finest grind setting on my 19 grind setting BURR Grinder. I have no clue why this is rated so highly by other users...unless again I just got incredibly unlucky and got a dud.
Aeropress Stainless Steel Filter
I like my new Aeropress Stainless Steel Filter. I did notice some fine coffee grounds at the bottom after pressing my espresso. However, I did not notice the coffee grounds when drinking my homemade latte. It's easier to press my espresso with my new filter. But I do not get any crema at all in my shot of espresso which was somewhat disappointing since I read that I would get more crema. I do not notice a difference in the flavor of the shot of espresso using the Aeropress Stainless Steel Filter; it just saves on using paper filters. So overall I like my Aeropress Stainless Steel Filter.
AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap and Stainless Steel Filter
Using the AeroPress Stainless Steel Filter rather than Paper Filters adds a significant amount of flavor when brewing your cup of coffee, making it a very worthwhile investment. However using this filter requires a fundamental change in the way you prepare your coffee (upside down brewing). This technique is both challenging and potentially messy. By using the the Flow Control Filter Cap along with the SS Filter you now can use the traditional AeroPress brewing method and enjoy a high quality cup of coffee that maintains the full taste of the coffee you selected. The Flow Control Filter Cap is mess free and easy to use. The design includes both an o-ring and self closing orifice that completely seals the AeroPress brew chamber providing drip free operation. A truly amazing product!
AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap & Stainless Steel Filter Bundle
Bought an earlier version of the aeropress flow control filter cap and it leaked so had to return it .I saw they came out with a new improved version with a gasket around the perimeter for the filter to seal, so gave it a try. It seemed to eliminate most of the leaking. The stainless steel filter however does not provide enough resistance/pressure to make a good creama so may try a different brand of SS filter until aeropress makes an improvement. Actually one of the Chinese versions of the flow control systems that I've been using for a few years works better and is half the price. Been using aeropress since 2011 love the product. They have great customer service so wanted to give it a try.
New Covert to Aeropress
I fell in love with the local, Kahwa coffee in St Pete, FL during an extended stay last month. I bought a bag to bring home and realized I had no drip maker! I heard about Aeropress during my same stay and ordered as soon as I got home. I am a newbie to the system, so I am still experimenting. I have tried every combo of paper filter, stainless steel filter, regular cap, flow control cap….Every cup of coffee I have brewed has been excellent. Process is quick and easy. When I use the paper filter with the regular cap, it pops out cleanly into my compost bin. When I use the flow control cap, the used grounds stick inside the cap. But it’s not a big deal to get them out.
Stainless Steel Filter doesn't work!
Terrible experience with the item! Having used the paper filters for years, I wanted to switch to the re-usable filter. But the water runs through so quickly that I can't even get the funnel to fill more than half. By the time I set my water pot down and pick up the stir stick, the water has gone through to the mug. I tried a super-fine, turkish-style grind but that only slowed it a bit. Customer service kindly sent me a replacement, but it works the same way. I give up! Back to the paper filters for now, and I'll try an off-brand stainless filter in the future (which is working beautifully for a friend).
Does not work well!
I bought these filters to stop using disposables, and for travel. My first aeropress, I bought one off Amazon and it worked just like the paper filters for a couple of years, but eventually warped. I decided to get a new one from aero. I bought 3 for different places. At no point in the description did it make an obvious point that you would have to do anything differently with the coffee grind/size etc. Imagine the fun of having the coffee leaking out the sides and all over the counter. It took going back to the website, searching for FAQs, and finally finding info that suggests I have to use a different grind - did that, still too fast of a brew - to have to call and have it suggested that I need a new coffee grinder, a burr grinder which will give the grind consistent size. No thanks, I'm no coffee snob, but I would like to use the aero as intended, and now I can't. Returning two, giving up on the aero system because it isn't the amazing and easy thing it used to be. When I first got one, the grind mattered less and I wore it out! Now, it seems like the quality doesn't seal well between the two pieces, and I can't use the metal filter with good consistency despite trying all the suggestions. I gave three stars because I'm sure there are coffee people who will take the time to puzzle this out because they love the idea of aero, but I'm over it, because I just want a good cup of coffee and haven't!
Flow cap works generally well; stainless filter not so much
I'm a Aeropress user since 2013 and just learned about the flow control cap and stainless filter options, so wanted to try both to extend brew time and eliminate the need for disposable filters. In summary - the flow cap is OK, the stainless filter is not great. I'd not purchase again based on my experience.
Not for me, sadly
The metal filter is great for reducing waste with paper filters. However, I still strongly prefer paper filters. For one, it leaks a great deal when I poor water into it, regardless of grind size (so far at least). The grounds don't end up actually immersed in water at all unless I do the inverted method. However, the inverted method is also problematic because unlike paper filters, which stick to the plastic cap when wet, the metal filter just falls out of the cap and into the water when you flip it upside down. I did end up getting the pressure control cap, and it works very well with that. However, it's also quite a bit more difficult to throw out the grinds when you're done - you can't just pop the puck out into the trash like you ordinarily would because the metal cap will be thrown into the trash along with it. So, long story short, it may come down to user error, but the metal filter is just not for me at the moment.
Both filters needed?
I used this metal filter for about 4 months when it began to warp, very slightly, and the screen itself seemed to develop indentations. I noticed that the pressure from the plunger began to be affected as well. I had a few paper filters left from the original purchase, so I placed a paper filter on top of the metal one to see if this would make any difference. The plunger pressure returned, but, occasionally, the plunger would sometimes mysteriously sink to the bottom without much effort at all, usually on one press alone. I have to mention that, when the Aeropress was new, it took me around 25 presses to get the plunger all the way to the bottom (my method is to use a rhythm of presses versus sustained, heavy ones). As the unit got older, the number needed grew less and less over time until now it only takes 15. So, it's a dilemma to know if the indenting/warping of the metal screen is the culprit in the loss of pressure, or the age of the unit itself. And this loss of pressure has affected the extraction of coffee. As time wore on, I had to add more and more to get the fullness I wanted. (I hope I'm making sense with all this.)
