Self installed 18,000 BTU Mini split systemNo prior experience
Well I have been a contractor since 1985.Some light hvac in my you get years but not my specialty.I know how to use my tools as only basic tools were required.
Air awesome/ heat ok
After 9 months using, I still give 5 star rating. We have a 860 sq ft 2 bedroom house. The 18,000 btu single handler kept our house nice all summer long using air conditioning and auto modes. Winter is here, and the heat can't keep up with our demand. It has to shutdown and thaw outside unit occasionally. We use as main heat source, but requires a secondary here in Missouri. I will say, it can keep our house warm by itself until outside temperatures get below 40f. If you live where it's above 40f all year, it would work as good as Central Air in a small house such as ours. I'm still loving it.
This product should be avoided.
After a year of use, this product disappoints. The app requires frequent force-closing to update readings, while the thermostat's temperature measurements are wildly inaccurate, often off by 6-10°F. The "auto" setting fails to maintain temperature, only running the fan continuously on low. The unreliable software and thermostat make this a product to avoid. Do your research before purchasing. I can write 500 pages of why you should avoid this product, but the review is limited to 500 characters.
The installation was as easy as they say it is. There are a few things I think need improved though. The direction and angle of the fittings coming off the condenser (outside unit) made it difficult to attach the line set. I used a Mr Cool brand wall mount bracket which determines how far unit sits from exterior wall. 2 more inches away and the line set could have been easily bent and attached. Also, some form of tape to secure the weather wrapping for the line set would be great. Otherwise happy with the unit.
Great, so far!
I’ve only had it about a month, so I can’t comment on longevity. However, that said, so far it’s been pretty great.
Wow!
Our old AC went out suddenly in the height of summer, Mr Cool got our new 18000BTU unit to us in a matter of days! My husband, with NO experience whatsoever installed our unit within about 3 hours. It has worked seamlessly since purchased and our utility bill has dropped so far by at least 25%. Hoping as we go forward we will see more savings as we've only has for 4 weeks. Don't hesitate. These units are fantastic and the shopping and delivery experience was excellent. We live in a very rural area and the semi truck couldn't get down our gravel roads. The driver called us and arranged to meet us nearby to deliver onto our tailgate. Our cabin has never been so chilly!!
Easy installation
If you can drill a 3.5" hole you can install this mini split. Yes its just that simple to install. You may have to hire an electrician for the power but the Mr. Cool its self is an easy DIY. My son and I installed it in about 4 hours, This thing runs so quite you have to stand in front of the inside unit to feel the air blowing on you to see if its running. You cannot hear it on slow and medium. The outside unit is nearly as quite. I installed mine on side of house no vibration no sound.
Does not work
This product turns on but does not affect the room temperature at all. I have the 18,000 BTU which supposedly could handle a 600 sqft room but there is no change in temp. It does not feel cool or hot as you'd expect. Cost $3500 to install.
Don't believe HVAC contractors, you can do this.
Only one part of this job you need to hire out if you have basic mechanical and carpentry skills is running 220 service to the outdoor unit. Around a $600 for a registered electrician do the work.
Terrible reliability and horrible service
My unit failed within the first year of ownership and customer service was not able to assist with figuring out what the issue was. We hired a professional who said we needed a new outdoor unit/compressor. The company felt the pro was wrong and shipped different items (twice) both times to no avail. Eventually we got a new outdoor unit, which has also since failed. I am writing it off.
"Mr Cool Mini Split: Unmatched Comfort and Efficiency!"
I recently purchased the Mr Cool Mini Split System, and I'm thrilled with its performance! Premium Home Source was excellent with communication and delivery. The installation was a breeze, and the system quickly transformed my space into a comfortable oasis. The sleek design and quiet operation exceeded my expectations. It's energy-efficient and provides precise temperature control. I highly recommend the Mr Cool Mini Split for anyone looking for a reliable and efficient heating/cooling solution.
Initially disappointed - Will update
I received this exact kit. The signal wire I believe is a true 25', I think the line set is slightly shorter. Product seems to be solid, fairly easy to install, but I can't test it yet because the line set is too short. WARNING - They advertise that if you need a longer line you can buy additional line set and a coupler. Do your homework. The 1/4 1/2 coupler isn't available for purchase by itself ANYWHERE. You can buy it with included signal wire for over $300. Support will not help you.
Mr Cool DIY 18k Heat Pump 4th Gen
Ordered the system off the website, spoke to a couple agents on the phone with some questions to make sure I was getting the correct system for my needs, everyone was very nice and helpful. System arrived in about a week and everything was packaged up nicely on a pallet. My dad and myself installed this system with minimal issues. Was a super easy setup and within about 2 hours we had it up and running. Warms the house nicely and we are about to buy another system for our Airbnb.
Can't keep a constant temperature, 10 degree swing
On the plus side, installation was reasonably straightforward. Instructions were OK, not great. This unit does a good job of cooling the room, and is very quiet. It is well designed and well built. The problem? The controls suck. With the unit set to 70 deg it comes on at about 75, then it stays running until about 65. All night long I am waking up either sweating or shivering. Support folks were responsive but unable to provide a workable solution.
Easy to install - happy with the units!
Installation from start to finish is simple and straight forward. My hardest part was determining exactly where I wanted to install the unit. I opted to use the full 25 feet of line set as to not have it bundled which is ok to do but I'm a stickler for a smooth finish look. I would also suggest making a punch list before you begin. I choose to pour a slab for the outside unit instead of the bracket mount or other options for my install. It truly is DIY if you have knowledge doing any electrical safely and by code. My installation took a little longer than Mr Cool's video (recommend) did but only because I ran in to a triple wall stud drilling my through wall hole for the line set. Again, it's straight forward and the end results were a room staying at very cold temperature with little to almost no noise. My ceilings fans have a higher hum than this unit. The outside is just as quiet, you have to see the fan turning to know it's running. It's only been running for a month but I feel confident it'll last. Also made a couple calls to them for clarification and they picked up the phone immediately and answered my question.
Great DIY Mini Split system
The Mr Cool system is unbeatable as a DIY guy. I was leary since I have no HVAC experience but after watching others do the install on you tube I decided I could do this! The units arrived really fast from Premium Home Source and I immediately noticed how professionally the components were packed. You could easily tell that Mr Cool takes pride in their product. Installation was rather easy following the instrictions and watching videos along the way. After completion, the unit works like a champ. I installed the the 12k unit in the 400 sf bedroom and it works quiet and efficient. Spring in Ohio has its ups and downs temperature wise so weve already used both the heat and cool functions and I am pleased to announce that my Mr Cool performed both flawlessly. I am so happy with this unit that I am going to purchase another bigger unit for our great room. I highly recommend Mr Cool. Save big money and do it yourself!
PULL THE TRIGGER! Best Decision!
If you are hesitating this purchase, PULL THE TRIGGER! This A/C unit was a saving grace for my family. Our house is older and didnt have very good ducting throughout, which is why we decided to try a split type system. My only regret is not doing this sooner!! Both the outdoor and indoor systems are SUPER quiet (you barely even notice they are one- especially the outdoor unit). It keeps my home a comfortable 71 F now, compared to the 84-86 it would normally be in the house all day long (outside roughly 91-100 F). I havent had the opportunity to review the heating, but will update that later.
Best system to buy after all my research
I had done a lot of research before I purchased this unit. I was concerned primarily about the installation but it was rather easy. Perhaps the easiest part was ordering it from Premium Home Source. Other retailers were telling me it would be months before they could get it. Premium Home Source delivered it to me in less than 2 weeks. I like the fact that this is the only unit that is a true DIY. You should have an electrician put in the electrical disconnect per your local building codes. The rest is really easy. We have had this mini split for a few weeks now but the weather is really mild so it has not been put to the test yet. One of the last steps in the installation process was to turn the thermostat to it extremes and let it run for a few minutes. The air coming out of the unit was really cold when set to AC and then nice and toasty when set to HEAT. I think this is going to work just fine for our converted attic space. Really happy with these units and the sales team at Premium Home Source
Fabulous HVAC option
I purchased a Mr Cool for our vacation home as a solution to not only increase efficiency but to gain control over the internet of the temperature, allowing us to turn off the system when we arent there, but have it ready for when we do arrive. The system absolutely has exceeded my expectations. Installation was a breeze compared to what you would expect. It did need two people and wasnt easy but certainly DIY. The system performance has been nothing short of remarkable. Weve had cool nights and hot days and the Mr Cool has kept our cabin at a perfect temperature range the entire way. And I just got our first bill... we used only $15 more than last summers 2-month bill when we didnt even have AC! Fantastic. Mr. Cool is great enough Id consider swapping our primary homes main HVAC system for room-by-room mini splits!
It has been getting hotter year after year in my home. Window units weren't cutting it anymore. M...
I live in a 1920's brick and slate bungalow. I got tired of installing and removing a 10K window unit weighing 80lbs. But I didn't have the money for central air ductwork and I did not have extra capacity on my electric panel to add a 60 amp 220v breaker. The Mr Cool DIY wall mounted units made the most sense. I did need to hire a handyman to use a hammer-drill to get through the brick. But everything else, I did myself. After installation, at first I thought it wasn't working because it's so quiet. For reference, my table top fan is louder than this system, that is how quiet it really is. I got a chance to really test things out yesterday as the outdoor temperature soared to 91 degrees. I wasn't expecting weather like this so soon but I am glad to report that the Mr. Cool mini-split ran like a champ. In fact, it didn't seem stressed at all. I warned my neighbor that the outdoor unit might disturb her but when I went outside to listen, it was hardly louder than the indoor unit! I haven't installed the smart phone app yet so I can't report on that. However, I am really happy with this system since a homeowner can install it themselves, saving money. This was the right decision. Thank you Premium Home Source for helping me purchase this unit
