Attractive, powerful, effective - and self-cleaning

I do love the Hauslane undercabinet range hood fan UC400. The variable fan speed makes it easy to adapt for soft conversations or seriously sucking away smoke and odors, and the self-cleaning feature is honestly genius.

UC400 Range Hood

Your customer service is superb and I was very pleased how accommodating your company and Kevin were in replacing and expediting the new replacement hood I received to replace the damaged hood. Thank You. Regarding the fan itself, I have several comments. The first is how high above the range the hood needs to be mounted. I did not know about the minimum height until I pulled the cover off the hood to install. Second, I think the use and installation instructions could be a bit more thorough. Third I would have liked light brightness levels. Fourth, I would prefer a 12 hour clock vs the 24 hour clock and I would have preferred a setting leaving the clock illuminated. Finally, a timer to turn the hood off would have been nice.

Wonderful, powerful product.

The 1st unit we had there was an issue with the power, so I called the company & the person I spoke with was absolutely wonderful. He immediately sent another unit to us. That unit had no issues what so ever. Hubby had it installed in little more than an hour, said the Instructions were easy to understand. It's very sleek looking & works fabulous, blows the doors off the previous one we had. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone. It's looks fantastic with my new stove

Not as expected

We were considering the UC-PS38 and chose the UC-C400 based on reviews and price (still not inexpensive). Had it professionally installed this week. Suction is much better than our over range microwave, but still seems short of our expectations. The instructions are a bit vague and inconsistent. For example, is it an “oil reservoir” or a “grease cup”? Are they the same? Instructions mentioned both. The water + detergent cleaning instructions could be clarified. I filled the hood with the proper mixture and tried the cleaning feature, following the (still) vague directions. When I pressed the autoclean button, the fans started, but on the slow speed. Then the liquid started dripping from the fan openings onto our range. Is this normal? Tried it twice. Same result. I’d like to return it and get the UC-PS38 instead. Just disappointed. Maybe we expected too much.

We've had this one week now and so far so good. A few annoyances to note:

Attractive unit, good price, terrible user interface.

The is a good looking and functional unit at a good price. The touch user interface is badly done. Whoever programmed the interface software set it up in a very illogical way. For example, if one turns on the fan, always it comes on at mid range, which is very noisy. It does not seem to remember the setting last used. And it seems to be impossible to turn off the fan but leave the light on...Just not well thought through.

Efficient Range Vent

The vent is excellent in removing fumes, smoke, steam and heat generated by my gas stove. It looks good and it is easy to clean. I can't comment on the install as it was done professionally, but it did not present and problems during the install. My only gripe, which is minor, but annoying enough to knock off 1 star is the vent turns on at the mid-range of the settings; I would like it to start off in low and move up, not start off in 3rd speed move up through the settings to get to low speed. The unit was missing a grease cup which Calvin was prompt to fix - I don't think the guy sleeps he replied to my email at night. I would give Calvin 5 stars.I recommend the unit and would buy it again.

It's a beautiful unit. Works well capturing the smell and the steam from cooking. However, not as quiet as I anticipated. The auto clean button needs to be pushed very hard before it starts to work. I thought it was not working at the beginning until I pressed it very hard. A picture is missing in the instruction booklet when it says look at the picture below for pouring the cleaning solution into the unit. Overall, I am satisfied with this product.

Worth the buy: Excellent suction, good self-cleaning (with care)

Have used it for 1 year - very happy with it.The good:One year and going strong - Good suction - tolerable noise - happy with the self-cleaning function. When the Black thermoplastic insert for the waste water container at the back broke after 6 months, the Hauslane support was kind enough to work with me and mailed me the part free of charge - so they do seem to be sensible and supportive of their product (A shout out to them for doing the right thing - though it did require a couple of calls due to some miss-communication internally on their end). The bad:Initial quality: One of the motors had an imbalance when new - so check your delivery before you install. Points towards spotty quality control and potential bearing or motor failure before its time down the road. Installation instructions are of marginal quality - installation is doable but needs 2 people and not straightforward.Initial operation: Instructions on the self-cleaning process very poor. Hint: use 10 drops of dish washing liquid for the full jar of water in the pouring container provided along with the hood. To switch on the self-cleaning, press the fan symbol on the far left side for 3 - 5 seconds and then let go once the fan starts (make sure there is fluid in the system - refill @ the top when empty). You can get 3 operations before needing to refill. Regular use of it after heavy cooking once a day seems to keep the fans grime free. The lack of a grill is a plus.Initial installation: Tip - the black thermoplastic holder for the water reservoir should be set in a bit loose - so do not tighten the screws too much - else it may develop cracks over time due to differential expansion and break off (happened within 3 months - but Hauslane support replaced it for free - no issues since then).Meidum term Operation:The bulbs don't last very long (have instructions below and pictures on how to replace the bulb). One went off after 9 months other after an year - much less than the 2000 hrs expected. You can get new bulbs from amazon ( example: Vstar G4 12V 20W Halogen Bulb JC Type Bi-Pin Light,Clear, G4 Bi-pin Base, Halogen Light Bulb (20W 10Pack) )- The bulb-replacement Images show that the most tricky step is prying out the ring like holder - use a knife to gently pry the bulb cover off - be careful not to knick the stainless steel. The gap is small so thinner the safety blade the better. Replacing just the bulb is then fairly easy. Then line up the cover with the tabs lined up to the holes and press to reset - don't forget to check the light before you put the cover back on.Hope this helps some of the users. In summary - I like this hood, don't regret buying it inspite of some issues and am hoping that it lasts for a while.

Super Strong Hood - Super Low Price

It took me weeks to investigate the Run Hood that I needed. This was to supplant my 10-year-old hood. I didn't need the work channels - I was looking at the perplexed channels - I needed solid CFM. My spouse does Asian cooking, so you would like a really great hood. We have our hoods ducted from the back -not the best. This has both options. This had not one or the other work or astounds for the channels. As you'll be able see from the pictures, it is diverse. Certainly, will permit more wind stream than work and perhaps baffles. The perplexed units with tall CFM are expensive and greatly overwhelming. Keeping in intellect this can be not something I would have introduced and after that return it in the event that I didn't like it - so I had to be exceptionally sure this was the proper one. This unit truly sucks it in. I tried, not fair tissues, but paper towels. The vents hold it right up there. As distant as smoke, it sucks it right in (and out the side of the house). The cost is phenomenal. $239, but there was a promo, so it came to $203.

This unit is a workhorse, and attractive. What more can I ask?

I purchased this hood after doing a good deal of research on hoods, after living for decades with the cheapest range hood ever made. The reviews of the C400 were very impressive, and although I wanted a less-expensive version, I opted for this one because of the auto-clean feature, and the twin light fixtures (as opposed to the single lamp in the less expensive models). I have not tried the feature yet, but it must be easier than the painful and messy cleaning procedure of the old hood. The hood is a high-quality product, and is sturdy, well-finished, and attractive. I had expected the stainless steel to be a heavier gage material, but it seems adequate to resist oil-canning and minor dings. It draws very well, especially compared to the single-fan, cheap hood it replaces. I will say that it is loud, but this is not objectionable to me as the noise level is equitable to the work the hood is doing. Installation was of moderate difficulty and really did require 2 people (if you do not have jacks or some type of adjustable stand to get the hood in the correct location prior to drilling pilot holes). The one thing that I have read other reviewers mention is the halogen lamps in the hood. I like the amount and color range of the light that the lamps provide, but must say that they get extremely hot to the touch. Not that I go out of my way to touch the lenses, but it would be great if the lamps were cooler or replaceable with an LED lamp (they are not).I am very pleased with this hood! Nothing emanating from the cooktop escapes the draw from the twin fans, even on the medium speed setting. The unit may seem a bit pricey to someone that is replacing a $49.99 unit, but I will say that this unit is worth the price.

Install Stinks, Unit Works Grear

As most other reviews noted, this thing is not a breeze to install. I have very handy, even hardwired this with the existing plug, but installing the bottom cover plate after the unit is hung was AWFUL. The instructions also did not align with this unit. The screw holes did not line up and the steel was flimsy. These are all just hassles and did not affect product performance. With that said, this unit looks sharp, has great suction power, and was a good price. If you are willing to be hassled with the install, this is a product for you.

Top notch range hood.

Just remoldeled our kitchen and after much searching and comparing I chose the Hauslane. I am totally satisfied with my purchase. It is well made, very powerful, and with the 6 fan speeds very efficient. I haven't yet used the auto clean feature but it's a nice feature not included with any of the other hoods I looked at. It also gives the option of venting horizontally from the back or vertically through the top. All hardware is included for either application. I feel this is an excellent range hood for this price compared with the many others I looked at.

Amazingly strong in performance and easy to install!!!

Amazing performance for sure!!! Noise level is very acceptable and it surely is less than my previous one. Installation was easy as long as you have proper tools like hand jacks(if you do it yourself), rotary handheld, etc. I did have my installer to do it, and he simply chose one of three adapters that came with the package to my ducting profile, and everything else was like a breeze. The lowest fan speed was already enough for any major cooking such as grilling or deep/stir frying. It was even strong enough to slightly deter the flame consistency from the suction power. My wife had always wanted to have an INDUCTION cook top, so it didn't really matter. In fact, induction cook top will really shine this range hood to its maximum but it's not a must. Regardless, this range hood is definitely worth it for the price both in users and installers perspective. Plus, reducing harmful dust and fume from cooking to its minimum is priceless. It surely can be done withough any professional installers as long as you have proper tools. Hand jacks can be very helpful that my installer used. He did have to punch couple holes to make screw holes that fits my cabinet but it was super easy! In fact, I should've done it myself.

Good combination of function and price

We installed this range hood using the rear exhaust vent, not the top exhaust vent. It was very good at venting the steam/smoke from cooking bacon. So much so that we couldn't even smell the bacon on our second floor (which is usually where any smoke/smell from our kitchen heads first). It's highest setting wasn't as strong as we had hoped, so couldn't give it five-stars. Plus I usually only give five stars to products that exceed my expectations.

Great Fan! Thoroughly consider mounting options when installing

Great hood. Looks fantastic in our kitchen and matches our other stainless steel appliances well. Performance of the fans is outstanding. Not too loud and great airflow. Easy can hold a paper to the inlets. Installation instructions were not as good as the product itself. A mounting bracket would have been a much better and easier design for installation. Nevertheless, this is a great range hood and is recommended.

Great Performance

My wife cooks everything with oil over a large hot gas flame which cause a substantial amount of smoke and other oil containing vapors. This range hood does an excellent job in capturing and removing these vapors. We have not had the opportunity yet to try the self-cleaning function. The noise is noticeable but to pull in that volume of air requires a fast moving fan which will create a modest amount of noise. We would much prefer some noise than having to clean all the cabinets weekly by hand. Besides the rave reviews on the Amazon listing I was convinced to make the purchase because of the self-cleaning feature. Several of our friends have examined the hood and one of them stated that they will be buying one. Thanks for a great product.

Installation could be improved

Fit and finish are good but close inspection of the black trim on the front of the hood shows scratches and markings from an imperfect paint job. The stainless steel comes well protected with blue film. Installation was fairly straight forward until the final step of reinstalling the bottom panel. I left about 3/8" space along the back wall thanks to earlier reviewers warning but I still found reattaching the panel to be a chore. There is a fair amount of spring along the back edge of the panel so I had to apply quite a bit of force to start the three screws along the back edge. I took me about an hour just to reinstall the panel and I ended up pulling my stove out of the way to apply enough force to close the gap between the panel and the hood and start the screws. The suction is way better than my previous hood and I am looking forward to see how the hood performs cooking Indian curry!

HUGE upgrade from the typical standard over the range hood

This is an excellent hood and a massive upgrade from any of the typical terrible low end option. I upgraded from a Broan hood that was only a few years old and did a better job at spreading smoke and steam throughout the kitchen than actually exhausting anything out of the house. This Hauslane is an incredible upgrade and draws an incredible amount of air out of the house. More importantly, it's larger. At 8" high it's a full two inches taller than the Broan it replaced which is good because it hangs down closer to the range and captures more. It also sticks out further so all of the steam from the front two burners no longer just bypasses as it did with the old hood. The whole front is rounded so no concerns about hitting my head on it.You have to take off the bottom in order to mount it and you see the fan blades which look like the front of jet engines. These are serious fans.
