Purchased this for $730.54 in March 21, 2019 and have used it 20+ times in all weather. It keeps me dry and is easy to set up/pack away. One thing to note is that it is VERY loud when it's windy even when you batten down the windows and space out the zippers. In the cold weather I run a buddy heater in the tent on low and that works well. Although you can have two people in the tent, it's a bit tight with gear and you better be okay with a little spooning.

Update: I have traveled over 4 months in this tent with nearly 80 nights sleeping in this tent, plus lots of weekend trips. Overall the tent is holding up really well, few damaged screws and things coming loose but if your vigilant its easy to catch and fix. Biggest gripe is the rain fly, it doesnt do well at all in wind. It has kept me dry the whole trip but if there is a gust greater than 20 mph the whole tent shakes. On nights with low chance of rain I remove the rain fly and it is much easier to sleep but if your in a storm, id rather sleep in the car than try than be miserable in this tent.Decided to switch from my Big Agnes standard tent to an RTT when overlanding with hopes that setup would be easier and i could camp on rougher terrain comfortably.Installation: extremely easy, the versatile mounting options will bolt onto pretty much anything with a little bit of creativity. I have mine mounted on the Smittybilt Defender rack. It took about 2 hours by myself, with help it would be even faster.Setup and use: Setup is fairly simple, alone it takes about 10 minutes (4 minutes with a partner) since you have to run back and forth pulling straps and velcro. Once everything is released its easy to pull on the ladder and flip the tent open. Then another 5 minutes to put in some of rods to vent. Its tricky to install the rain fly on tall vehicles, you can do it from the inside but it takes time and isn't fun when raining. Once setup the tent is surprisingly stable. I was a little concerned the hinge that folds the tent in half would have some flex and bother me but absolutely nothing. I installed an extra 2 foam padding (Queen size stuff fits well) and its pretty comfortable.
I don’t like to recommend anything until I’ve tested it, but after the thunderstorm we went through Saturday night I feel like I can weigh in a little early on this one. In short, if you are considering a roof top tent (RTT) then the Smittybuilt RTT is a fantastic tent at a reasonable price. Just after dark Saturday night a big ole red cell formed on the radar and just sat right on top of us and dumped nearly 2” of rain in the next 2 hours along with some significant winds. Since it was so early in the evening and we weren’t ready to go to bed yet, we just moved our chairs into the bottom “annex” room, ate our supper and had a few beers while watching the lightning flash outside. Later on when it slacked up a little, we crawled on up in the tent and called it a night. Not a drop of water in the tent and even with the strong winds everything stood strong. It’s hard to find a tent that is truly waterproof, but this one did very well and we slept like babies, high and dry.The only 2 areas I’ve seen that need to be improved after spending almost a solid week sleeping in this tent are:1 - Needs a little thicker memory foam mattress. It has a 3” mattress, but I can still feel the hard floor of the tent slightly when I’m on my side. I’m going to add another 1.5” memory foam pad underneath it or maybe even a thin air mattress. I think that either will solve the problem and won’t effect the setup and storage in anyway.2 - The ground stakes for the annex are junk. I’ll go buy some heavier duty stakes to replace them.In summary: Well made, easy to set up, lots of features and user friendly.
Rather easy to put on our Jeep Wrangler and travelled well. Travel cover is tight and weatherproof! Easy up and down. Our first time using it was windy (gusting to 45+ mph) and rainy. No damage to the tent, flap poles, or frame. BONE dry after hours of rain.Great tent!We purchased from another site, but am glad to share our review!!
This is my second Smittybilt Overlander, I have two trailers. For the price it is hard to do better. I have recently used my off road trailer on a 5 day trip and it was great being elevated, and very comfortable.
Although the tent is super easy to unfold and close by one person in a few minutes, you’ll need 2 people to lift it onto the vehicle. The inside is a lot more spacious than I thought and can easily fit 2 adults and a dog. The included LED light is super bright and can be powered by a small battery bank. Also nice that there’s windows on all sides and the top, so ventilation is not an issue. Build quality is great and seems like it’ll hold up for years to come.
This is by far the coolest thing I've ever invested in. I've slept it in already about 10 times. My fiancé and my pup love camping out and the height of the tent always gives us an amazing view. I can't wait to buy the tent annex for this. Such a cool design.
Got the tent installed on my teardrop over the weekend and very shortly after the ladder developed a crack. After contacting SmittyBilt directly they responded in minutes and now a replacement is on-the-way. I'll be camping in it a couple weekends from now and will be able to report more about how it performs there. I'm surprised how comfy the 2 mattress is. Love how much thicker and sturdier the canvass is compared to a ground tent. Kids love it, too.
Better Bumper should update its product information and photos of this item. To my surprise the tent I was sent was the newer model. The color, rain fly and ladder have been updated. This tent is well made, easy to set up and large enough for 2 to sleep comfortably in. Just spent my first rainy night in the tent no problems with leaks, remember to dump the rain out of the rain fly before getting out of the tent or you’ll take a bath.
First roof top tent. Didn't want something that would break the budget but wanted to be off the great especially in bear country. The tent looks really qaulity and the foam mattress is really nice. We will see how it lasts because I already have 2 trips to Moab this month and will spend about 6 nights in it.
I camped from Texas to Key West and back. All kinds of weather and conditions and the tent held up beautifully. Lots of people interested in it also.Little extra padding to sleep on goes a long way but also slept fine without it.Not for everyone with the climbing in and out but I'm 54 and managed fine.My up and down time on the tent took me a little longer than most reviews on it, but my subie is lifted also. For me it was about 20 to 30 minutes.
This tent is built well. Don't have to many negative things to say about it.Lot of positives.Easy to installAnd maintainLots of roomKeeps you dry and up off the groundOnly bad things so far is that the tent when it rains the material keeps you dry but it stays damp for a long time kinda feels like water is leaking in on the sides but not really but jt did keep me dry thats really the only negative thing I have to say
I installed the tent on my Toyota Tacoma was not that easy to install, Guess the saying easy install always seems to really mean a pain to install. The ladder that come with the first generation is very unstable it came apart at the slide joint. I went straight to the ground causing injury to both my legs and my left shoulder. Smittybilt did replace the ladder fast but it's the same model, which I have no confidence in. I did request the ladder they have on the gen 2 model but on luck. I would not buy again based this ladder.
I put this on my Subaru and will do a little camping while on the Subaru but will be buying a Jeep very soon and will move it over. It’s pretty nice inside, in my driveway I have been testing it out and even with freezing weather and lots of rain it has stayed dry inside. With the cover on closed up it stays dry as well so I’m happy with it. Only one down side, I can’t keep a 2” thick mattress topper inside while closed.
Super awesome once installed. Pop off the high quality cover, let out the ladder, pull it down and you're ready to go! Ladder is adjustable for all surfaces and more vehicle heights. Love this thing, so good for views, plenty of windows and rain cover for wet days. Great value for money. The initial install was tiresome getting the lock nuts on the roof rack clamps. Once it's on, it's all good! Really surprised me how well it works and universal it seems.
This tent has been a good buy. I've spent around 20 nights in the tent. I've hauled it across Texas on a 12 hour drive into the Davis Mountains. Then to New Mexico in Carlsbad and Santa Fe. Then to Colorado through several forest trails and the famous Alpine loop. I drove through rain, ice, snow, and multiple mountain passes. Tent held up great. It does get quite a bit of condensation inside at night in cold conditions, but is very easy to dry. Would buy again.
I'm pretty impressed with the quality of this tent. I feel like it's under priced for what you are getting. I purchased this tent over the other brands being sold because of the size. For the 2/3 man roof top tent options on the market this had the most square footage and head room. The LED light strip was also a bonus. The installation was pretty straight forward but takes a little effort. Overall I'm very happy with the tent. I've used it once for 3 nights and was pretty comfortable. I am going to fit a memory foam mattress to add more comfort for being a side sleeper. Thank you Smittybilt!
It's the easiest thing to put up once you've installed it onto your roof rack. I've installed mine onto the factory crossbars on my Nissan Rogue. This took some doing as the tent base rails are widely spaced and come up right onto the attachment end fittings for my crossbars. I had to buy some hard rubber furniture tapered shims to go between the base rails as my roof rack end fittings to make it more stable and spread the contact load. We tried the tent for the first time and it was perfect at 45 deg F and so easy to set up and fold down the next morning. 10 uses at free parking sites and it pays for itself in savings on hotels.
Works as advertised and couldn’t see spending more for something that’s already good quality. Most complaints are the ladder, you will have to drill extra holes in it to have all the travel you’ll need for your set up but easy enough. The ladder is steady and I haven’t used a telescopic one so I can’t compare but most seem to prefer them so I would suggest smittybilt get with the program and use what most want and improve their sales even more. That being said I would still buy this over more expensive ones.
