Magic?
So far the Varathane 2X is magic. I'm repairing areas of 25 yo parquet flooring. Surprisingly, the parquet is almost completely fine. The areas which are not fine are horrible. I'm taping off the bad areas and sanding and sealing bit by bit. So far, I'm beyond impressed. One of the questions asked about recoating the not too bad areas and I'm happy that I'll be able to lightly sand and recoat those areas. I will be calling to find out if the recoated areas also need two coats.
SCRATCHES VERY EASILY
I have been refinishing hardwood floors for 14+ years and this is the first time I have used a water based poly. In this practical application this water based poly was used on a 12×12 new cedar plank floor. 2 gallons of this poly was applied per instruction on the can in 5 layers with sanding between coats. A curing process of 3 weeks with cabin at 69 Fahrenheit and absolutely no one at cabin withinthis curing time.. A bit excessive but I wanted to know it was fully cured. The finish is now 1 month old and already has deep scratches that turn white all over the floor. I will be sanding back down and this time I will be using a REAL oil based poly that will actually hold up! 200 dollars wasted!
Fantastic product
This was recommended to me by a floor finisher. I sanded my hardwood floor and applied this product as directed. It went on very thick and was easy to spread. I ended up putting 3 coats on because it was a high traffic area. I couldn't be more pleased with it. It filled in a lot of little areas that had little gaps and it leveled off nicely. It dried hard as a rock. the only thing is that it is expensive. But worth every bit of the cost.
Bedroom floor in good shape after two years (2019-2021)
I bought and applied this after completely sanding the floor with a random orbit floor sander, and thoroughly cleaning afterwards to remove all the sawdust, etc. The floor still looks good after two years in the bedroom. This includes after repeated moving of furniture, and cleaning up after a sick kitty (easy water cleanup even after finding hidden spots months later - and no stains found on the floor). No scratches or scuff marks, which is surprising seeing that the bed frame and other furniture did not have floor protection attached. No scratches from kitty claw marks while playing "hockey" with pony tails. I do recommend this, and plan on using more as I refinish more flooring in my house. Patience is key here; take time to properly prepare the floor and apply the finish in several thin coats, not one or two heavy coats. If need be, I'll follow up with a further review in the future.
Beautiful.
I just finished two coats of this product over a hardwood floor that I painted. The paint is not holding well in some areas and was advised to cover floors in polyurethane. What I love about this product - 1. no odor - a huge plus, 2. drys fast, 3. the self-leveling worked, 4. using a thicker product with fewer coats was wonderful - 2 coats look great. I purchased satin and love the shine. I have no idea how this will hold up. It has only been 48 hours but we are able to walk on it. So far - so great.
Ruined my floors - dried uneven and splotchy
I’m HIGHLY disappointed. This ruined my floors. I painted them, let them dry for 2 days and decided to put a clear coat on to help protect them. I asked the associate at HD what to buy and she highly recommended this. I applied it like the directions said and within minutes of applying it, it looked blotchy. I was worried about it, but there wasn’t much I could do. I left for work and came back to ruined floors. It didn’t dry evenly ANYWHERE. It’s all blotchy and awful - across my living room and hallway. This sucks.

I applied to my floors as directed. It looked beautiful. I Allowed it to dry in a warm room with no humidity for 4 days. I noticed a small edge in the corner of the room that had pulled up just a little. I grabed a hold of it and preceeded to PEEL UP THE WHOLE ENTIRE FLOOR just like it was one big gigantic removable sticker in less than 15 seconds. Needless to say It did not adhear. It was like a slightly sticky thin clear plastic book cover that had been glued down with tacky repositionable adhesive. Hardly durable or long lasting.

We used this product on our newly sanded and stained red oak floors in the whole downstairs of our house. We were in a hurry to move in so I opted for this since it can be recoated quickly. Ensured stain was thoroughly dry after several warm days and then applied two coats with a pad over a two day period as recommended. It went on evenly, dried clear and looked fantastic, but over the course of a month it started to turn milky. Now two years later our floors look like they have a sheet of semi-transparent plastic on them. I've been working with wood and finishes for years and never had this result, but have never used a water based polyurethane either. We finished a red oak stair rail at the same time with the same stain but different finish and it looks great. Could not be less pleased with our floors now. Will have to redo them sometime in the near future. Definitely not recommended for floors.
I dont get the hype
I was very excited to try this and had very high hopes. I've refinished 3 homes with wood floors and all came out beautifully with an oil based poly. I wanted to try a water based for the safety of my kids so I went with this product because of all the great reviews. I completed the whole sanding, cleaning and staining process for my new 1000 square ft home and everything was looking great. I'm a perfectionist so this took me forever. I applied the polyurethane and it looks beautiful and still does in some areas. What's the problem? DURABILITY. I don't know why everyone else says this is a durable coating because for me it is very much the opposite. Everyone warned me not to try water base poly but I didn't listen. I even gave the floors 2 weeks to cure just to be on the safe side but the first day we came in, large scratches started appearing. I'm trying to let it go and just accept that I'll have to refinish the floor again before selling in about a year but it's upsetting because I spent so much time and effort making sure everything was perfect only to be ruined by a weak finish. Every day I have to worry about what my kids are playing with, what shoes guests are wearing and I can't even let the dogs run around on the entire first floor because of their nails. As I've said, I have refinished floors before and never had to worry about what was going to scratch the floor, now I'm constantly on edge, freaking out about how I'm going to find time to refinish 1000 sq ft again within the year with 2 small children. I would not recommend this to anyone who is active, has kids, has pets or really even likes to wear heals. And don't even think about putting rock salt on your sidewalk/driveway because it gets stuck on your shoe and scratches the floor... Very badly.

This stuff did a great job. I bought it because using two coats instead of four and not having to sand between coats appealed to me, as I spent over a month on my hands and knees sanding down my dining room floor with a palm sander. I used an applicator to apply both coats, waiting about 40 hours between coats. The room is about 148 square feet. The first coat used a little more than half the can. The second coat used the rest of the can. I did not stain the floor before applying the Varathane. The floor is 3.25" wide tongue and groove pine. The Varathane brought out the grain in the wood, and the floor looks better than it ever did. I waited a week to let the finish cure before putting the furniture back in the room. It's been twelve days since I put the furniture back, and I'm very pleased with the results. The trick was to put on a slightly milky coat and let the liquid find its own level. The odor wasn't bad, but I did have the windows open and a couple of fans running.
[Rewarded Review] GOOD QUALITY FINISH
This finish is thicker than most. Label states that no sanding is required between coats if you re-coat after 3-5 hours and before 3 days. I first tested it on both soft wood Mahogany and hard wood Black Walnut to see how much it raised the grain. As instructed used no sealer, applied one coat, let set 6 hours and applied second coat without sanding. The grain was raised, still raised after second coat. Did a light 320 sand and applied a third coat which resulted in an excellent finish. Offers good scratch resistance, dries clear, very flat satin finish, only needed the one sand to make a super soft finish. May have been able to get away with only two coats had I sanded between coats. A good quality, hard floor finish that looks great all while using fewer coats of finish and no sealer. Would have given 5 stars if I really didn't have to sand between coats. Wood pic shows other low gloss finish by comparison to satin finish on lower pictured Mahogany and Walnut.

We have always sought and appreciated Varathane products. During our latest project, refinishing about 500 sq. ft. of 20+ year old flooring, we had to replace about 130 sq. ft. of severely damaged parquet. We purchased new red-oak parquet floor and performed the repairs. When attempting to stain the new and old flooring with Minwax stain, we had a hard time getting the new flooring, even after thoroughly sanding it, to effectively take the stain. We then procured Varathane stains, Traditional Cherry and Dark Walnut, and the stain was just outstanding! To complement the stain, which looks so elegant, we decided to match it with Varathane's Ultra Thick 2X, Satin, and the results are just remarkable. The poly is very easy to apply, dries quickly and it looks absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend this product.
[Rewarded Review] Clear Satin Ultra Thick Water Based Floor Polyurethane
This Varathane Clear Satin Ultra Thick 2X Water based Floor Polyurethane provided me with a finish which required only two coats and dried faster than any similar polyurethane that I have used in the past. The self leveling technology is amazing. I was able to cover a 12 x 15 ft. room (180 sq.ft) with two coats and had a little left over in a one gallon can.
[Rewarded Review] Love this product
I do a lot of crafts and cover a lot of things with fabric. I always use poly to seal and to make stronger and more durable crafts.I make a lot of home decor items out of foam core sheets and cover with fabric and this poly is perfect. I like to use the floor poly because it is stronger and takes less coats. The drying time and low odor is awesome. It goes on smoothly, drys clear and I love the satin finish. I am not into "glossy" because I think it makes things look more plastic and does not have the elegant look of matte or satin. The clean up was a breeze for the brushes and sponges. I did my dining room table with a 54" drapery fabric. I glued on with wall paper paste, trimmed edges and then am in the process of putting 4 or 5 coats of this poly on top to protect it. This is the second table I have done. The other table is now 19 years old and looks like new. The entire table and chairs were painted and then 4 or 5 coats will be applied to protect those also.

Terrible product. I have used regular water based polyurethanes many times with no issues. I tried this on some painted trim/built-in. I thought it would work well as I have used the regular Varathane floor finish with no problems for similar projects as well as on floors. This sets up and drys IMMEDIATELY leaving no time at all to work with it. It goes on way too thick and drys way to fast. This product actually left a cracked appearance after it fully dried. I had to completely start over with sanding, priming and repainting.
[Rewarded Review] It works so far.
Quite thick. It looks and feels like white elmer's glue. Goes on white and dries clear. I practiced some and found that a light first coat on wood surface followed by 2nd coat at least 24 hours later gave me the best results. If applied too thick on vertical surfaces it will drip. I had a little trouble avoiding brush marks. Results better using a soft, lint-free cloth, and for floors I would use a lint free applicator pad. Manufacturer's directions say not to use lambswool. They also say to sand with 220 grit paper if 3 days between any coats, but sanding not necessary if applying 2nd coat in less than 3 days. I didn't notice any real difference between sanding and not sanding between coats, but so far only trialed on wood scraps and a small desk top. I've only used oil based finishes in the past and I think this stuff is a pretty close in appearance. Should be stronger, too. Love the clean up with just soap and water.
[Rewarded Review] Nice results so far.
Had only used oil based finishes in the past so practiced on wood scraps to get an idea how thick to apply coats and how long to wait in between. Temps 60-70's during the day and quite a bit cooler at night, I found 24 hours between 1st and 2nd coat worked best for me. I tended to want to slop on the first coat but found a little bit lighter than medium 1st coat gave me the best results without sanding in between. After sanding and preparing a 13 step staircase, applied a light cherry stain. I finished with 2 coats of this polyurethane (without sanding in between the 2 finish coats.) The stairs are now beautiful again and so far I'm pleased with results. This stairway gets heavy use so a good test spot to see if I want to do the rest of the house with this stuff. And that would be my recommendation. Try it on a smaller project and give it a work out. For consideration: my stairs, though old, are in excellent condition. All I had to do was clean, sand and sweep. I had no patching or nail heads to cover up. Also, socks only, no shoes for one week after. Low humidity, left windows open and let the furnace kick on for temps below 60 degrees even with windows open. Soap and water clean up but don"t wait too long.
[Rewarded Review] Good Polyurethane
I have two spare rooms that I plan to renovate but I’m not ready to start yet so I’m trying this product out on a scrap piece of wood for now.
