Wonderful product!! It will turn oak wood into an orangey color unless you put a stain first. I tried first using a Lambswool applicator but that was a horrible experience. The best way I liked applying was using a large natural bristle for oil based. I took my time and just “painted “ the floor , from one end of the room to the other. Let dry. Sand lightly, clean. Put 2nd coat. Let dry 4 days. So happy!!
This stuff is quite amazing. People who have problems with it being too thick aren't mixing it long enough before and during use. Or it was defective lol. I only wish it had a spout to pour it on the floor mess-free. Odors are bad nut not as bad as people are saying. Although I did have an exhaust and windows open for hours afterwards. You can definitely tell it's there but it's not a problem. Overall great affordable oil based poly. Basically the only thing I'll go oil for.
Leaves a Beautiful floor but..
I just finished redoing 24 yr old pine plank floors. They are beautiful again!! But folks doing this type of project need to know the SQ Ftg of my main living area is 770sq and it took a total of 11 Gallons of sealer for 3 coats!! The 2 smaller rooms almost 3g each and both have 3 new coats. So DO Not rely on the 5-600 Sq Ft listed on the can or HDs estimate because you will absolutely Not have enough!
The product is fine. Being hounded by Home Depot for reviews sucks. The "shopping experience" consisted of me walking in, going to the proper area, pulling the can off the shelf, and checking out. Not everything in life needs to have a"customer review", Home Depot. Stop harassing us to give reviews.
This product is very easy to apply as low odor and can be used on a large variety of material. It is important to follow directions on times between coats. If you don’t time it right, the material is extremely tacky and hard to sand between coats.
Worst poly finish I've ever used
The finish is absolute trash. It's extremely prone to bubbles to the point it's just sort of foaming up when using. After they're formed there's maybe a 50/50 shot that they'll actually pop and even then most of the time the finish is already to dry by that point to relevel so your finish is pock marked. I absolutely regret ever buying this product, it's absolutely bogged down my production schedule.
This is a very good product. A little expensive but everything is these days. I used it on some open grain/soft pine wood floors. I'd love to see what this product would do for cherry oak or any hard wood floors worth restoring.
This stuff was horrible!!! It wrinkled and ruined my floors! It cost me 250 dollars to clean this crap up resand them and they are terrible! Do not buy this product!! Unless you enjoy redoing floors over and over
Applied this floor finish to an older recently sanded oak floor. I used a lamb skin 10" applicator. The product is quite thick but went on fairly smoothly. The drying time was about 8 hours for the first coat. Subsequent coats dried faster, about 4 hours (both days - similar temps and humidity). The satin finish is consistent over the covered area. I will be interested in seeing the durability over the next few years.
Am in the process of applying the first coat. Product went on very smoothly over previous floor which needed LOTS of prep including bleaching for stains. Very much like the satin finish when it dried - not a fan of glossy finishes on wood. Noted that it took longer than 48 hours to dry before the light sanding in prep for 2nd coat. Could possibly be that during the drying process there were several hours of high humidity. Just a note for those living in humid areas. Appeared to resist
Avoid like the plague
I used this on a small closet floor refinish. All instructions were followed and the results are horrific. I see based on some other reviews that I'm not the only person to have problems with this finish. Floor was sanded down to bare wood, stained and then after an overnight dry time for the stain, the first coat went down. So far so good. Waited 24 hours (instructions say 12hr minimum), and random orbital sanded with 220, vacuumed and wiped up with mineral spirits. After the mineral spirits dried, second coat went down. Immediate problems where the finish wrinkled in several spots. I was able to use a card scraper to get up these spots and sand for a third coat which went down with less issue, so I assumed I was out of the woods. Waited 24 hours, sanded the entire floor again and put on what I thought would be the final coat. Wrinkles everywhere! This finish does not like to stick to itself. Not sure where to go from here - I'll try to scrape the damaged areas and refinish with a different product.
We used this floor finish polyurethane 7 years ago when we first started making our floor. We cut the boards, applied the stain, applied 3 coats of this floor finish (stain/polyurethane applied as directed) and then nailed all the boards down. Life got busy and we had three rooms left to do. We just finished those three rooms last week, using the same method for the floor boards. This floor finish polyurethane works so well that it is almost impossible where to tell where the 7 year old floor boards and the newly laid floor boards meet, as the shine and durability have both held up very well on the 7 year old floor.
Satin is extra glossy
Dont use unless you want a lot of shine. first coat looked semigloss. after second coat it looks glossy. I see you have to stir it which was done. Product shouldnt be this hard to get the results you want. Unfort the alternative is to start over and that isnt going to happen. I only hope it dulls down after it cures more
Very easy to use and very forgiving for beginners
I am rather amazed with this product. Sanded with Random Orbital and stained, then applied 4 coats of this Poly. It is amazingly easy to apply and very forgiving to a novice. Use a paint applicator pad or a fine brush. It gets tacky very quickly so work fast with overlapping stroked for the smoothest finish. It was completely dry it less than 2 hours. I recoated in 3 hours. Very self leveling, very minor smell, not unbearable at all like Oil based poly. Just a great product.
Brought out the colors in our hickory
We researched and researched to find a finish for the hickory flooring we used on our stair treads and landing. This one allowed us to skip putting on wood conditioner or anything else. Two coats was all it took and the colors came out beautifully in the wood. It is a challenge to apply because drips show up after you're done, but the HD Associate who told us to use foam brushes was absolutely right! We used foam brushes and basically applied it and wiped it off. Less is better! Beautiful finish. Excellent product. The image shows our hickory stair treads (Stairek brand), half of them with a coat of this Varathane and half without. Now to see if it holds up, which I'm confident it will.
Worked great for old and new floors
I have a 125 year old house. I brushed this on to our original wide plank wood floors, and it came out beautifully. I could walk on it after about 5-6 hours no problem. I also used this on fairly new solid wood flooring that came with a coat on it. It had gotten worn down from moving chairs around on it. It covered up the rough spots, hardened them well. I could still tell where the floor had worn, but I expected that. I recommend this. Easy project.
Finished a stenciled floor with this
I used Khaki, Seaside and Lagoon Spray paint with a set of 12x12 tile stencils to do the floor in my she shed studio. (Say that three times fast!) I did a few coats of white porch paint, did the stenciling, then finished with a few coats of this Varathane Floor Finish. It looks fantastic and everyone who sees it thinks it IS tile until I tell them I painted it. The floor finish went on very quickly and easily. I used a 16in foam floor finishing pad and it made the job super easy. It's actually a bit shinier than I wanted, but it makes it look more like real tile.
Great product
I’ve used this poly extensively. My first use was on older, previously finished wide board pine floors. They’d been maintained with Murphy’s Oil, which made preparing them for proper adhesion of poly quite a challenge. I scrubbed them with a 3M green scrubbie and diluted automotive degreaser that I rinsed off well. The floors came out great. I liked the softer glow so much I used it on a dining room table. It’s a great product that doesn’t show brush marks. I never used a lambs wool applicator, but instead got on my hands and knees and applied with well vacuumed foam roller and tipped out the bubbles with a fresh foam brush, also vacuumed, using up several brushes. This puts on a thin coat, but comes out great. On floors I applied 3 coats. Tedious, but lasted for years until I sold the house. Thereafter I just washed those floors with diluted Windex using a Swiffer like arrangement with a hand towel which made life so easy. Never had a problem with this product.

Great when cut with mineral spirits
For my first coat I used the polyurethane at full strength. I followed the directions on the can, applying with a lambskin pad, natural bristle brush, gently stirring (not shaking), and carefully applied the finish. Despite my carefull application, I wound up with tiny air bubbles throughout the 1000SF floor. The solution was to first square buff (150 grit screen) the first coat, the apply a second coat. After doing some research, i decided to try cutting the ployurethane with mineral spirits at a 5:1 ratio. It worked perfectly. I will apply three coats to make up for the thinner layers of poly. Ultimately will have used 7 cans of poly to cover the 1000SF (in three coats)
