This was the best purchase ever! We researched portable air conditioners, and Whynter always got the best ratings. We were also looking for the double hose models because they are more reliable in cooling, being less stressful on the AC system than the single hose. We have an open area living room, dining room, kitchen. This unit keeps all three at a comfortable temp for us (72°) and sometimes a little to chilly! Very satisfied with it.
I purchased this unit in early August and ran it through early October. This AC unit is easy to use and very effective at cooling our large living room/kitchen area. The area is around 600 square feet with a vaulted ceiling. To be fair, our summer outside temperatures run around the mid to upper 80’s with high humidity. Inside temperatures without AC can hit up to 78 degrees. This unit will bring the temperature down below 70 in about 60-90 minutes. It also reduces the humidity to make the space very comfortable. The automatic moisture evaporation system works well. It was pretty easy to set up by making some simple modifications to the plastic window insert. A few negatives, the unit is very large, it has tendency to allow bugs into the house and is noisy. I solved most of the bug problem with foam insulation around the exposed gaps and also used tape to seal the smaller gaps. Next year I will likely make a custom insert for our windows to minimize bugs getting into the house. Overall, this unit functions well and we are pleased.
We purchased a very old home last year, built in 1810. We love it ! One drawback though is it doesn't have central A/C. We purchased this with the hope of taking the edge off during the summer. As it turned out, it kept us perfectly cool - including our dining room, living room, kitchen, bathroom, office, and laundry room - meaning that it cooled far more than 500 square feet. This thing ran constantly from May until the end of September and it's a workhorse ! It never leaked and ran flawlessly. We were so impressed, we purchased a second one for the other side of our house and that one too has worked great. Don't hesitate to get it, you won't be disappointed.
Broke in less than year of use & nonrepairable
We thought we bought the best AC, worked amazingly well for the little time we needed it. Very limited use over 3 years, reside in cool area, used for 1st floor, only used 8 hours daily, < 8 wks/year. Total usage easily < 9 months. Followed all instructions & kept maintained. Compressor failed to work this year. Requested instructions to repair, had to purchase extra long screwdriver to do so. No problems found. Whynter said it’s unrepairable and offered discount on next purchase. What a waste.
The perfect AC unit!
The very first reason I purchased this unit is because of it's duo hose system. Unlike other portable ac unit which has only 1 hose system for the exhaust. This unit has a separate intake and exhaust manifold that helps keep the unit very efficient. The unit was delivered and very well packaged. Assembly is a breeze. The accessories that came with it are made of high-quality materials. Cooling the room of about 400 sq.ft is quick with the 105 degrees temperature that hit LA last week. Not to mention that this unit can be used as dehumidifier and can also heat the room, simply the perfect AC unit.
similar to central air. it turns on and off automatically, turns on in fan mode and after a little bit will either go AC or it shuts back down but not off. I was hesitant at first but now i just leave it set at my chosen temperature and it does the rest day and night. To be honest i thought at first it was broke it does take some time to figure it out with the remote. I have 2 Whynter ACs and im very happy with both of them. the one listed for this review is the new model and the light does shut off after a few minutes. My white one i have in the bedroom as it stays on going to fan which i use for white noise but it has lights!! i have to cover them at night to darken the room. Other than that this brand will always be my first choice in portable ACs
[Rewarded Review] a win - win for me
look at my photo, i have 2 of these, the new one from BB is hooked up and working just a good as my first one that is 3 year old and still working great .. it cools my bedroom and can the whole 2nd floor of 4 bedrooms, you need to add a fan to push the cold out of the one bedroom ,, i plan to rotate use of 2 each summer now ,, so as to reduce wear and tear to each to last as long as it can ..
Works For The Space Needing Cooling
Order online and pick up at store. Received upright, box with no damage, and with factory plastic strapping. Brought home and waited 24 hours for freon to settle. Open box, setup per instructions, and unit started fan 1st, then compressor kicked in, ran to set temperature, compressor shut off, fan only, and then after a few minutes the fan shut off also. The unit automatically started up again when needed and cooled the 490 sq ft space. Temps here is 100 - 103 degrees. Purchased this unit as it has been around for a while as I needed reliability as a 1st priority. This unit is in addition to our Evaporative Cooler and when the smoke from wildfires and smells from skunks are pulled inside by the Evaporative Cooler we start the portable AC unit. Works as advertised.
The compressor may be sketchy but warranty was honored.
I bought this unit last summer and used it for several months and everything worked fine and we enjoyed being able to cool down our livingroom. We stored it in a main floor closet for the winter and this summer got it out again. While it was working well when we stored it away, this summer it ran but did not cool. It was merely circulating the air. I called Whynter and got a fellow named Jose. He was friendly and helpful and sent me instructions on how to test the unit. I did as he asked and even sent pictures of the various parts of the tests. After several back and forth sessions, it was determined that the compressor had failed. Even though the unit was a little past the warranty date, Whynter authorised replacing the unit with a new one.
Ordered 2 of these to replace the terrible single-hose portable AC units that could not keep the upstairs bedrooms cool due to negative air pressure problems. They work very good! Very easy to set-up and control and much quieter, even though they have two hoses! The hoses are also thicker and better insulated than other brands, but the exhaust hose should be insulated with an extra cover to make it more efficient. Also nice that I have not had to drain them since they are self-evaporative!! However, Whynter should include the intake filters, which have to be purchased separately. Also, it would be nice to have the AC setting to have a continuous fan setting, so it is not as jarring while sleeping when it turns off once the set temp has been achieved.
***30 days later***
Will be returning. After Hassle with Home depot on the delivery…. The first time turned on there was extremely loud rattling (like wake you up in terror from a dead sleep type loud rattling) when the fan turns on. Maybe broken motor piece inside? unsure as there is no way to even open it and check. Also this portable AC is HUGE, but wouldn’t have minded if it worked properly. Was never able to figure out if it makes the room cold due to the rattling starting after 2 mins of use. Do not recommend this, especially for the amount paid for it. Other people when searching on google have also had this issue. Buyer beware, I am lucky it started doing this within the 30 day return period.
Obviously these dual tube units are not small nor light weight but I have 3 other units similar to this one but different brand. I really like how sturdy the hoses attached to the window plate. My other units are a bit cheap in the way they connect. I also like that the hose attached to the back and already point aiming upwards so you can move the unit closer to the wall. I will definitely be considering purchasing another unit to have if one of my other different brand a/c fail!. And no I don’t pick these up to store at the end of my season, they get unhooked and roll into the rooms closet for storage. They are heavy but I did carry it up to my second story bedroom where the others live for the winter months. I am convinced that the dual tube units are the way to go. Signals are cheaper but I have tried a couple and just returned them right back to the store, they just struggle to cool things down.
FROSTY & FANTASTIC!
I bought this machine two weeks ago, and it is PHENOMENAL! I live in a pretty large apartment, and this thing cools my living and dining rooms without a problem. My old portable AC unit maybe kept my space 8-10 degrees cooler than outside. When I turned on this Whynter machine; I had low expectations....boy was I surprised! My weather station showed an outdoor temperature of 93.5 degrees F, and indoors it 76.2 degrees F! Absolutely AMAZING!! It also reduced the humidity way better than my previous unit.
Please do not buy this awful air conditioner
The Good Housekeeping award is bogus. Consider these issues before buying: 1) When the compressor motor turns on there is an extremely loud bang that will wake you up at night. This happens at random times while the unit is in cooling mode. 2) The LED screen is bright blue and also bothersome at night. 3) The remote is garbage. The buttons need to be pressed multiple times to make anything happen. 4) The hose connectors are impossible to remove once attached, which makes storage inconvenient.
[Rewarded Review] Leaks and adds more humidity than it removes
The unit worked great for a few weeks. It dehumidified and cooled a small room. Now the water tank fills up within a few hours causing it to shut itself off until it's emptied. I was able to add a drainage hose to the bottom tank solving the auto-shutoff from a full tank. But, for whatever reason, in air conditioning or dehumidifying mode, it adds a lot of humidity to the room defeating the purpose of the dehumidifying function. The unit's worst flaw is that it leaks from the plug after you drain it for the first time. I was unaware of the issue until I noticed a huge puddle under the unit resulting in part of my floor being ruined and needing to be replaced.
[Rewarded Review] Powerful portable AC
It cools very well, and we have it in a fairly large space that's full of big windows. It's quiet, and the auto temp works well. Our only complaints are with the exhaust. The tubes (which are enormous) can only be in the middle of the window access connector, so our view is more limited than it needs to be. Also, the part of the frame that joins the window is not flush, so there's no way to form any sort of seal. We had to use duct tape... This was a pricey until. I feel they could have done better there.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I GOT MAYBE 2 MONTHS OUT OF THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE. IT BARELY WORKED WHEN I GOT IT, NOW IT BLOWS LUKEWARM AIR. YES, I HAVE DONE ALL OF THEIR RIDICULOUS TROUBLESHOOTING - EXCEPT THE ONE THAT SUGGESTS BUYING ANOTHER UNIT???? WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JOKE. WHYNTER DOESNT CARE, HOME DEPOT DOESNT CARE. THEY ALREADY GOT MY $500. HOPE ITS WORTH IT, 20-30 MORE YEARS OF BEING A CONTRACTOR, ILL NEVER BE BACK. HOME DEPOT IS JOKE, SHOP WITH A COMPANY THAT WILL STAND BEHIND WHAT THEY SELL. ONLY THE BOX STORES DO THIS
Wow! Really works!
We replaced a Whynter ARC-12S that was a 1 hose model after a blower fan broke. It never really cooled, but did lower the humidity.
REASON FOR THE HIGHER PRICE; This is a two hose model. The most common single hose is outlet only. This pumps heat from the inside air outside. So you used the air cooled and pumps it outside. Also this causes a negative pressure inside so hot outside air is drawn in through the cracks. This unit uses outside air to draw heat from your inside air, more efficient.
