So far so great. I’ve had Whynter 10,000 btu for a bit over a month now. It’s not too loud and cools the air well. You can adjust the lever to blow higher or lower. I’m using its natural capacity to dehumidify as a catch water in a bucket rather than running it out the exhaust. This gives me extra water to water some plants more than water shortage requirements allow in the heat of summer.

[Rewarded Review] one heck of a great AC!

first, this is my second arc-148ms that I own, I also own a duel hose whynter 122ds thats rated at 7000BTU SAAC/DOE, the arc-148MS is a single hose rated at 10300 BTU SACC/DOE. . a duel hose vs single hose doesnt matter, ONLY the SACC/DOE BTU rating. this single hose arc-148ms outperforms my duel hose whynter becouse its rated at a larger BTU. now to tested specs on the arc-148ms. it uses 11.3AMPS max and 1300 watts, I HIGHLY suggest you run it and nothing else on a 15 or 20 amp line in your house. next, this thing cools like crazy and has an excellent thermostate. Im in mississippi and run one in my 750 SQ FT living room and it keeps it moderatly cool on days when highs are 97 and lows are 78!, in my 200 sq ft bedroom another arc 148ms cools like crazy even more!!. NOTE: you are NOT going to get your living room down to 66 degrees in a heatwave with ANY air conditioner....central, portable or window. in the 70's? yes, in the 60's ? NO......now IF you live where it never gets above 85 degrees with nights in the 60s then yes, but summer in mississippi? NOPE!. for great cooling I suggest this air conditioner in a 400 sq ft or less room. next, this is a loud AC!, at 4 feet its doing 60DBA, , at 12 feet in my living room its 55DBA, you will need to turn your TV up a bit, and the noise may help you sleep at night, but when it goes from off to on at 12am ( thermostat cycling) it may wake you up, maybe not. but for the steal I bought this at ( $387!) I can put up with some noise. again, the noise is the ONLY negative Ill give it. NEXT, Ibve NEVER had to drain any water from it as it automataccly evaporates the water, and Im in VERY humid mississippi!!. HIGHLY reccommended, one final thing.....setup is VERY easy, took me less than 30 minutes to set up.

Whynter 14,000 BTU A/C excellent choice except.............

Cools well, heats well, be aware that the heat pump function requires a drain for water condensate permanently connected. A/C function is too noisy compared to a window unit or central air. Will bother light sleepers when unit cycles on and off during the night. Manufacturer also notes that unit can be louder than expected. Air flow in both heat and a/c modes is awesome, cools and heats a large 4000sq ft bedroom that faces the afternoon sun quickly. The room also has lots of windows.

I just opened the box of this ACunit for this summer. The box was very heavy (however it is expected to be heavy). Once you were able to get the actual AC out of the box, it has wheels on the bottom and can be moved around very easily. Installation is easy. It would have been a perfect 5 stars except that the sliders to install the vent in the window arrived cracked. I will likely have to order this pieces to have it replaced. Otherwise, everything else is in working order.

Problems with heat function.

I bought it mainly for its heat pump. The heat itself is very good, but you can only run the heat function on "auto." Because of this, you can't set the fan speed and it only runs the fan in that setting on high. This made it so that it was constantly loud, but more importantly, it creates so much air movement that we were always, asking eachother, "is it just me, or are you cold?" The windly environment it creates by always being being on high fan, outdid any of the heating. This would be a great unit if you could set the fan to low when using the heat function. Also, the remote never worked.

This product seems to work well for what it is. We are in an area going through a heat wave (the part of the mountains where we are usually doesn't need a/c), so I wasn't sure if this product would work. I was formerly employed in the HVAC industry, knowing more about central air. This product seems to be better than our original unit made by the brand "Sharp," which utilizes an ionic cooling feature but doesn't get cool enough for our preference. The portable "Whynter" unit makes a big difference in the temperature of our home, at least for the rooms closest to it while in use. Great in conjunction with our other unit from another brand. Decent size. Easy to assemble. Doesn't really leak liquid or air through the unit's connections. Easy to use remotely, though the remote isn't always the most responsive. Love the oscillator ("swing option"). Definitely worth trying out with the current temps outside.

Works great. Pulls a LOT of power.

Great machine. Cools our bedroom nicely. The problem: our bedroom outlets are on a 15 amp circuit and this unit pulls 11 amps. We are older, so we also have oxygen concentrators and a C-pap. In the middle of the night, the breaker often flips, shutting down all our nighttime machines. We've hired an electrician to rewire the room with a 20 amp breaker with new wiring that can handle the extra load, but had I purchases a machine that pulls less amperage, that too would have fix the situation. This is why I gave it 4 stars. If you have the power, the machine works extremely well.

I spent the extra money on this unit with hopes it would out perform others with less BTU and less cost. It is less than two years old and does not cool properly. I checked the filters, they are clean. I noticed a small patch of ice in the top right corner of the coil, so the machine is icing up already. In addition to that there are several bent coils behind the removable filter, this is the first time this filter has been removed ( in my home anyway ) Overall, a poor performance for the short time it ran. cheaper models with less BTU have run for 4-5 years without issue. definitely WILL NOT buy another

Love this Portable AC

This is our very first AC ever considering that we live in the SF Bay Area, there really isn't a huge need for AC since we typically have an ocean breeze. I did purchase one a few years back from Costco, but that unit was so loud that we didn't even use it and returned it as soon as it was delivered.

usage not that long in duration

This monstrous ac is heavy as heck but is a heat busting workhorse. I have no clue as to how long it will last. the other portable acs we bought lasted 3-4 years. I have been running this one since the beginning of the summer and it still does the job 2/3 of the way through. The second one like this we bought had a crust on the side of it. The sliding flat paneled window vent, the part that holds the hose to the window, was limited in range but did work for us. The vent hose connects to two hard plastic couplers in a very poor fashion. It just snaps on. In other words, both the window coupler and ac coupler have a loose seal compared to other portable acs I have had. Even though there's leakage, it still does the job well. I would buy it again.

To Me It's The Cadillac of Portable A/C's

Yesterday, here in the US Poconos, it was humid in my home. So instead of suffering I took the cover off my new portable A/C unit , that I thought I wouldn't need any longer this year, and was reminded of how nice this thing is. I upgraded to this 14K BTU unit this season. It does a great job, even with my sky chalet type ceiling. I loved how the listing showed the actual BTU's as opposed to the listed BTU's. I love how the vent swings up and down slowly to circulate the air. I love how quiet it is. I love how the hose is assembled without a screwdriver. and stays put in the back when you need to adjust the unit. I love the extension on the window piece that actually covers my entire vertical window opening. (The window opens horizontally so the opening is longer.) Plus it's not very noisy. I also appreciate this review request was just now sent to me, giving me time to use it and to get to know the pros and cons. Not 2 weeks after I got it where everything is always peachy.

I will no longer buy a portable a/c online!

I ordered this a/c on 5/26/19, and it was delivered by UPS 6/4/19; the box was somewhat roughened at base, the interior foam packing cracked here and there, but a/c appeared intact. I followed setup directions, and next day attempted to use dehumidifier function (a/c not yet needed). Dehumidification did not happen, no condensate produced, and I exchanged emails with Whynter about getting the unit to work. Whynter's responses were pro forma. Finally, after 2 or 3 days of fruitless operation, I asked for a refund/return on 6/9/19. Sylvane, an email said, would get back to me within a day, but that didn't happen. I had to make calls to Sylvane to initiate the return with UPS. I was told that, once unit was picked up by UPS, I would be issued a refund--the refund was issued 6/18, but the details said a wait of 5 to 10 days (!) would happen before I would see the money posted to my card. I'm still waiting as of 6/27 around noon. In the meantime, I went to local store, picked out a Hisense portable a/c with dehumidifier in an intact box, brought it home (it was better packed compared to Whynter), set it up quickly for it to produce condensate and lower the humidity effectively. Here's the result: I have paid for two units, one works, the other that doesn't heading back 3000 miles to California. Sylvane has my money. I can say all calls to Sylvane were polite. However, this is a frustrating experience in addition to having my money kept by others even though what was sold to me was defective. Going to a local store was much easier, effective, and the seller said if the unit doesn't work to bring it back for an immediate refund (!). So I wait for the refund.

[Rewarded Review] Very good air movement

I bought this unit after checking the air movement capability between this unit and others. This unit is one of the highest in that category and it's important to know that measurement as it's going to determine how effective the unit actually is. A lot of units can put out cold air but if they aren't able to blow it out across a room, you're going to have a difficult time cooling an area. The unit was shipped and received without any issues, all parts were present without damage. Easy to unbox and set up. I have another Whynter model that is no longer made and it's still working well in a different room. I live in a high humidity area so use the continuous drip method to remove condensation from the air (hose is included.) I tried ordering this twice from another major online retailer and both times never received the item. Ordered from BestBuy and it arrived in perfect condition and earlier than expected.

Decent unit, would like better temp control.

I am using this in a 450 sq ft basement workshop. The shop has 2 1/2 walls in the ground, 1 wall in air conditioned space, concrete slab floor and concrete slab ceiling (shop is under the garage). In the heat of the summer (90+ degrees) it was able to keep the shop at the set point of 75 degrees, but ran 60% to 80% of the time during day hours. It would finally shut off at night as the outdoor temps dropped into the 70s. I have done a thermal analysis of the heat losses in the shop, and the majority of heat transfer is through the concrete slab ceiling into the garage. If that were insulated, the unit would do much better. Somewhat noisy, but not unbearable for a shop. I have not had to manually empty the water reservoir at all. So the moisture is being blown out with the exhaust. The temperature regulation is not as good as I would like. The manual states it will control the temp to "within 5 degrees of the set point". I find that hard to believe, but if I have it set for 75, it might get as hot as 77 or 78 before turning on. The fan runs continuously, which is a bit annoying at times.

Exceeded expectations.

Living in Portland, Oregon's moderate climate, we don't need AC in the summer normally. But on occasion it does get very hot, so we break out a portable unit to cool our home's small upper floor (About 550 sq feet). Just prior to a few day 105 degree heat wave, our old Delonghi died, so we ordered this 148. Must say it acquitted itself great. It kept us comfortable and was quieter than the old Delonghi, appropriate for a high capacity unit (it still makes some noise, mind you - depends on your expectations). Overall we have been very happy with it and would purchase one again.

Works as advertised and as I had hoped.

I purchased the unit to cool a 1,000 sq. ft., single level, 1-bedroom condo. I was completely aware my total square feet exceeds the specs of this unit, but was expecting it to cool the bedroom where it was installed and hopefully lower the overall temperature in the rest of the condo. To this extent, it worked perfectly!! The bedroom is very cool, which allows us to now sleep in comfort and the rest of the unit is still cooler than the outside temperature. What it does do well in the entire condo is remove all humidity when used in the a/c mode.
